Unpopular opinion, I hated this book. Claire is not a strong female protagonist. And I never believed in the love story. Also, not much happened and I never felt like the book was driving in a particular direction. I read the whole thing, hoping for redemption, but there wasn‘t any. I struggled through this and wouldn‘t wish that on anyone else.

Hated that this one also ended on a cliff hanger...but a nice quick read otherwise!

The conclusion to this trilogy was a bit too normal. For books that try and show the dark side of magic, this all wrapped up pretty nicely, which isn't really how I wanted it to end. I wasn't a huge fan of books 2 or 3 in this series, but I would recommend the first one.

I really liked the premise of this book and the scariness of the church of America. But I didn't like Vivian's story or journey throughout the book. I found it uninteresting and at times not very believable. I wanted to like this one, but it didn't work out.

This book and particularly the audio version was painful. The voices detracted so much from the story. At the same time the story seemed so bubblegum pop happy and perfect that was also painful. I've read others of his books and enjoyed them, this one was just too unbelievable for me.

Didn't like this book at all! I love dystopia, sci-fi but this one wasn't a good one. It was overly wordy and used too much slang which made following the story difficult. But then I realized there wasn't much story to follow, almost nothing happened in the first half of the book. The plot came and went without much fanfare or interest. This book really let me down with all its awards and forest reviews. Don't be fooled, this one isn't worth it!

Reviewsbylola I feel like sci Fi/dystopian fiction is so easy to mess up. 8y
Lindy I had the opposite experience with this. Strong world-building, absorbing plot, pace of a literary thriller. Well-developed characters. Especially liked relationship between nonhuman Emiko and hard hearted Anderson. 8y
TeR Bummer😞 I liked this one, it's so interesting how many different takes there are on a book. I enjoy hearing what everyone thinks! 8y
affyfe One review I saw on this talked about how there really isn't a protagonist or one person to root for. Which, to me makes it tough to connect, maybe that was part of what didn't work for me. 8y

This book was a short and quick read but left me a bit unsure if I enjoyed it or not. It was a pretty simple story with only a small amount of conflict. I guess maybe I wanted things to work out differently in the end and feel like the author just kind of ended it. I don't feel like it was a waste of time to read this, but I'm not sure if it left me with anything.

Not a big fan of this one. Just not a topic I enjoy, I hated all the people that took advantage of the main character which I'm sure is how you're suppose to feel. I think it was well written and got the point across but just not for me!

Book list for next month's library trivia! Looks like this one is up first for me. Anyone read any of these? Suggest them?

(Yeah, our library does pub trivia, they rock!)

SarahK I've read both the lost city of z and our souls at night. I loved our souls at night and I enjoyed the lost city too 8y
affyfe Thanks @SarahK, our souls at night looks pretty short and I'll hopefully get to that one soon! 8y

Although I read this book quickly (2 days), it didn't hold up the whole way through. The set up was great, it felt a bit scary and you just knew something bad was going to happen. Then the bad things happen and it loses its edge. No longer is it a scary story but more of a recovery story.

MrBook Thank you for the insight! 8y

Maybe I had heard too much hype about this book, but for me it didn't live up to it. I didn't particularly like the characters or find myself interested in their lives. It also was lacking a plot, in my mind. I wanted more story.

My local book club picked this as our read for July. I just started it. Has anyone read this? Will it be good for discussion?

Lindy Should be great for discussion. Global bioengineering corporations control food and calories are precious units of energy. Rights of sentient robots. Plus well-developed characters, great worldbuilding. 8y
Books4brittany This one is more about being human to me. The characters are so real that it's hard to figure out if there's a protagonist. Once the poop hits the fan it's even more difficult to tell, which I think is what made it so realistic for me. in the real world there are so few people who would qualify. 8y

Centered around the death of a newborn, this thriller takes you into the history of a college town and what leads up to this tragic event. You're given just enough information about each character to assume, at some point, each and every one is guilty. Page turner!

Good start to the weekend!

JPrecht Oh! Thank you for the reminder! I started this book back before Christmas, and then had to return it to the library because someone else had a hold. It started so well! I need to get back on the list... 9y

Although I didn't expect to like this, I really did! First off it is an interesting story but it is told well and in a concise way that makes it a good read. Something I would've never picked up on my own, but our local library trivia picked it for this month. Hoping to watch the movie soon!

Although beautifully written and narrated, I just had a hard time following this audio from the start. I'm not usually someone who would read a memoir, so I thought I'd give it a try. I was quickly reminded why I usually avoid them. Although it did make me intrigued about falconry!

abhisynthe I feel like this one is not a good candidate for narration. The prose needs dwelling upon and is quite advanced - I defn need a dictionary with me. But once you get into it - her descriptions are detailed and at times mesmerizing 9y

Although devastating at times, this was a great read. Pretty quick read for a very heavy subject. Good chunk of recent history in there too that I didn't know much about before reading this.

There were a few too many stories in here, especially in the beginning, that relied on the fantastical side of history. I'm not a huge folklore fan so those didn't appeal to me. But some of the ones that were tied to real events, I loved!
