The Devil in Silver | Victor LaValle

Pickpick

It took me some time to get my first #freakyfriday pick finished, due to a surprisingly speedy move and unpacking.
But, I FINALLY had a little time to sit down and relax and knock this one out and... Wow. I'll be thinking about this one for a while, and I'll definitely be seeking out Victor LaValle again.
Next stop, The Devil All the Time (gotta get my devil kick over with, I guess?)!

@Clwojick @monalyisha @ohyeahthatgirl

ohyeahthatgirl I loved Devil All the Time, but holy cats it's bleak. I'm so glad you liked Devil in Silver! I've not read anything by LaValle that I've disliked. 6y
kait.corum I really liked his style! The library has a few more of his, so maybe when I'm not working my way through this challenge... >.> 6y

A sample of my #freakyfriday books! I'm so excited for this: there are some I've read, some that have been sitting on my shelf, and some that are brand-new to me!

Thanks for the great choices, @ohyeahthatgirl -- April is looking great already.

@monalyisha @Clwojick

kait.corum @swatreads I knooow, I've read stories here and there, but I've never gotten my hands on the whole thing, so this is pretty sweet 6y

kait.corum @monalyisha Kelly Link is up there in my favorites, but I've actually missed out on this one until now--but I'm excited for it for sure! 6y

The Bell Jar | Sylvia Plath

Pickpick

I can't decide whether I'm relieved or disappointed that I didn't read this in college.
Not that I went through anything quite this dramatic and interesting, but Plath is chillingly good at capturing these little moments, describing feelings and events with such bright clarity that it almost hurts to look at them.
I've been putting this one off for a long time (and using it now to put off Foucault's Pendulum), but I'll be returning to this one.

You wouldn't believe how many of my notes in this boil down to "lmao same." I don't know how many times I heard "being an #englishmajor is #notcool go be a teacher or something."

(And on top of that, I can't dance. What are the odds.)

I don't really have much to say on this one, but I do have to say that Plath has a way of creating these absolutely sublime lines that just catch you and make you pause. I'll probably be reading more of hers in the future.

Whew, I finally finished the absolute #tome that is From Hell, now it's time for...

Um...

Hah, haha, uh, my finished list for February is going to be about three books long, *maybe.*

From Hell | Alan Moore, Eddie Campbell

FINALLY.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this one, but it is... An absolute tome of a book. I really enjoyed how much Moore puts into the story of this, while keeping in mind through the appendices that no matter what, we really don't know *who* Jack the Ripper really was.

I'm so glad I found this for an actually affordable price for once--I have my issues with Alan Moore, sure, but this was so interesting.

So there may have been a trip to McKay's in Nashville, which I highly recommend if you don't want your #bookhaul to break the bank.
.

I may have also returned home with an extra special treat--if you can't see the top of the stack, I may have gone and gotten myself engaged. :O
(Not that I really know anyone personally here--I'm just excited and telling everyone who will listen :) )

I feel like I should be drinking and/or having a less cheery day. Or worshipping a snake god. There's plenty of options.

It didn't really hit me just what a behemoth this collection is: I think it's just going to live on my nightstand, not in my bag. #comics #graphicnovels #alanmoore

(Hope I got the right title here, I don't see this cover in any of the other ones. ;_; )

I'll be venturing out on this rainy day, but I think I have everything I need! Trying to get some use out of that #Spanish minor, since I'll be using it at work soon anyway.

I'd love to do the #unreadshelfproject2018, but it's hard when most of your books are in storage, waiting for a move. Still, I think I have enough to get started.
If anyone has a suggestion (if the spines are readable), I'm listening until breakfast is finished. :)

I should have expected that Shirley Jackson would absolutely blow me away. I'm usually not one to do more than get misty-eyed while reading (just not physically responsive as a person)--but I audibly gasped at [REDACTED].

There just aren't enough characters for a full review (I'll update later with a link, if possible), but if you like Gothic-y stories about crumbling house, evil small towns and sisters... Give this one a try.

There's a lot to unpack in this book about magic and class and so on, but I think there's something to say, too, about "tragedy tourism." (Is that the phrase?)
It's so interesting that we not only seek out these things, but we feel like we ought to get to see it. We have to know. We watch the shows. We think we're owed an answer.
I'm not sure where Jackson is going with that, but maybe I'll have a full thought about it by the end of the book.

I feel like a bad Shirley Jackson fan for missing out on this one. I wrote my undergrad thesis on "Haunting," for goodness sake--

But whatever. I'm getting it now. So far, I love it as much as everyone said I would.

The art in this book is absolutely stunning. No colors, just stark black and white on every page.
I found myself a little lost in the art sometimes, mor than the story, which is pretty simple: an eldritch abomination comes to London(?) to wreak havoc as a little girl, while a man tries to save... Someone. Anyone. It's not a cheery story.

If you like Lovecraft and eerie art, I'd pick this one up.

I forget sometimes just how much I enjoy this series. The colors are gorgeous, and the style is so distinct, so interesting. The story was just as good, of course--I'm looking forward to more, in general.

Of course, I'm a sucker for an interesting take on vampires and the supernatural.

Well, I might have slipped away from Litsy for a moment. It's been a rough couple of months, with a lot of sad funks and gloomy days, but I think I'm getting back into the swing of things.
So, naturally, my first response is to go for a behemoth of a book.
So far, I'm enjoying it. The villain is intimidating, the protagonist is fun, and I'm absolutely devouring this one. So thanks for a good new year's start, Joe Hill.

You know, I didn't go into this book thinking about the horrors of a Trump presidency, but here we are. Thanks, HST. At least there's some comfort in reading this essay and seeing so many parallels--and knowing that we've made it through. Let's just hope we can do it again.

Not the best of pictures, I know, but I just finished my second Anne Carson collection of poetry, and it really came at quite the time. I've had quite a hectic week, and to sit down with these beautiful, thought-provoking, haunting poems on a few rainy days definitely cheered me up.
