From Hell
From Hell | Alan Moore, Eddie Campbell
Winner of the Eisner, Harvey, and Ignatz Awards for Best Graphic Novel. A New York Times Bestseller! "Remarkable."-- Leo Carey, The New Yorker "... dark, fearsomely complex..."-- Douglas Wolk, Publishers Weekly "My all-time favorite graphic novel... an immense, majestic work about the Jack the Ripper murders, the dark Victorian world they happened in, and the birth of the 20th century."-- Warren Ellis, Entertainment Weekly "Moore's works have often defied the public's expectations of the medium, and his most ambitious work, the massive graphic novel From Hell, is no exception... The result is at once a meditation on evil, a police procedural and a commentary on Victorian England. ... an impressive piece of work."-- Patrick Day, The Los Angeles Times "... a massive exploration of the Jack The Ripper murders that incorporates British history, Masonic ritual, and London geography in a fascinating and horrifying conspiracy theory."-- Tasha Robinson, The AV Club From Hell is the story of Jack the Ripper, perhaps the most infamous man in the annals of murder. Detailing the events leading up to the Whitechapel killings and the cover-up that followed, From Hell is a meditation on the mind of a madman whose savagery and violence gave birth to the 20th century. The serialized story, presented in its entirety in this volume, has garnered widespread attention from critics and scholars, and has been adapted into a major motion picture from Twentieth Century Fox starring Johnny Depp and Heather Graham. Often regarded as one of the most significant graphic novels ever published, From Hell combines meticulous research with educated speculation, resulting in a masterpiece of historical fiction both compelling and terrifying.

So, I am not #DNF this one, but I don't foresee myself picking it up and browsing through it in any definite timeline. It is good, and I am enjoying it, but physically, it's difficult to read (the typeface is hard on my eyes). So, I feel it's not a “relaxing/fun“ read for me right now. It will stay near my bed though, so I do plan on getting to it eventually.

Today‘s prompt of #killer reminded of this work by Alan Moore, which is a fictionalized account of the Whitechapel murders in Victorian England.

I‘m creeping along through my FROM HELL reread at a much slower pace than usual because I decided I‘d follow each chapter with the relevant notes instead of reading them in a glut at the end. They‘re dense and interesting, and I always get a kick out of Moore‘s little asides about how practically no one reads them. To be honest, I think I‘ll probably skip ‘em during Read #4, whenever that happens.

Day 210.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.

It took me some time to get into this, but eventually I was hooked. This is a dark, engrossing take on the Jack the Ripper murders. I can‘t say I loved it but it was unique and interesting!

1) Hell yes! I‘ve been looking forward to it for a couple of months now! It‘s always fun to see what people are reading, watching, and how they‘re celebrating the season!

2) I‘ve been anxiously waiting for almost a whole year to read Alan Moore‘s From Hell…it looks wonderfully creepy!

Bizarre, difficult to follow and incredibly explicit, I loved this book so much more than I was expecting. I was holding my breath near the end for the conclusion. For a book so dense with history and conspiracy theories, this was incredibly gripping and easy to get through. I‘ve never been that obsessed with Jack the Ripper but now I‘m thinking i should read more about it!

TiredLibrarian I loved From Hell. I'm not a big graphic novel fan, but this was really well done, and I love Jack the Ripper stuff. 3y

One of the great works of art from the 20th century, it weaves alternate theories about Jack The Ripper with ever-deepening layers of occultism and British history. Not that accessible for the “lay” reader; know your late Victorian history! Moore and Campbell are responsible in no small way for the “graphic novel” being considered as literature and high art. Amazing accomplishment and pretty damn ghastly. I‘m still spooked.

FINALLY.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed this one, but it is... An absolute tome of a book. I really enjoyed how much Moore puts into the story of this, while keeping in mind through the appendices that no matter what, we really don't know *who* Jack the Ripper really was.

I'm so glad I found this for an actually affordable price for once--I have my issues with Alan Moore, sure, but this was so interesting.

I feel like I should be drinking and/or having a less cheery day. Or worshipping a snake god. There's plenty of options.

It didn't really hit me just what a behemoth this collection is: I think it's just going to live on my nightstand, not in my bag. #comics #graphicnovels #alanmoore

Been caught up in retail management chaos. Only have six hours before my ebook library loan expires and I‘m only halfway through this one! Aahhhh!! I hope you are all doing well. Gonna try and be more present again!

I‘m off for three days for the first time in probably a couple years. What‘s everyone‘s weekend plans?

monkeygirlsmama @julesG Will have to keep this is mind. 7y
Bookworm54 @monkeygirlsmama Humble Bundle is great! Most of the time the offers are to do with games, but you get some amazing book deals! ☺️ there are basically several tiers and you pay as much as you want to pay, unlocking a different number of books. (You can see what they are before hand) They have manga and comics and fantasy... it's worth a look ☺️ 7y

I must confess that I'm not a big graphic novel fan... I've read a few this year and liked them but didn't fall in love with the format. My boyfriend, however, LOVES graphic novels. Here's his shelf of them (and his Murakami collection).

AlaMich I'm with you. I keep trying, but it doesn't really take, except I enjoy the graphic novel version of Game of Thrones (all of which I have already read). 7y
underthebelljar @AlaMich I guess it's just not for me. But I do seem to enjoy them when they are graphic novel versions of books I've already read and loved. 7y

Is it uncouth to recommend TV on LITSY? If you like crime, cops, forensics, Victorian England, and a grisly shuffling off of the mortal coil or two, you could do worse than checking out this show about policing Whitechapel in the days after the Ripper murders. Starring a Mr. Darcy and Bronn from Game of Thrones. 4 seasons Netflixable. Neville Longbottom joins the cast in season 4!

readinginthedark Oooh! 😯 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @readinginthedark I posted this because my wife and I just finished season 4 and it was SO. BRUTAL. And awesome. 8y

Jack the Ripper enthusiasts, this one is for you! With this piece, graphic novel meets homocide to create an intriguing artistic rendition of the most notorious murder mystery in English history. Not only does it do that, but it's filled with conspiracies relating to a darker side of Queen Victoria's reign! And let me tell you, Moore did his research for this one--I recommend reading the appendix as you read each chapter for the full experience.
