I‘m so excited for this semester to begin, starts on Monday, and I have already cracked this book open! Yay!

4. All weather is reading weather! I do like taking a book to the beach on a hot day though
5. I like curling up with a cup of tea and flipping through my coffee table books - the one tagged, Bibliophile, a big heavy book of Harry Potter art, all fun!

pickI enjoyed this & got a lot out of it. I expect I‘ll refer to it in the future. It‘s given me different ways of thinking about the story I‘m currently working on, which is good b/c I am a bit stuck. I‘m not a genre writer (this book is geared for them) but I liked a lot of the advice, probably because I agreed with much of it. It will help me be a better editor. My one gripe is sometimes he‘s so clever I can‘t tell if he‘s kidding or advising.

so-so2.5⭐️ I‘ve read just about everything in here I need to read right now. I‘ll reserve the revision chapter for after NaNo. Some of this is very specific to writing fantasy works, which I do not, so I had to take those things with a grain of salt. He likes Campbell‘s whole “Hero‘s Journey” thing, which I do not. I disagree with parts of this and felt disheartened by others. The writing challenges are very specific to each chapter (cont‘d below)
Total fan of some parts of this book, not a fan at all of others, but I am enjoying discovering new authors to check out. My TBR is growing from various parts of this book (the ones I like obviously).

People never understand why I obsess over characters names so much, or why some names keep changing even several drafts in. They don‘t get why I look up name meanings and take such pains to get just the right name for each character. They also don‘t get why I can‘t even start writing unless my main characters are properly named. pickI‘ve read a lot of craft books in the twenty years I‘ve been writing professionally, and I‘ve got to say that this is one of the most useful I‘ve ever come across. It‘s deeply playful and seriously comprehensive. It‘s also quirky as hell, which is especially friendly for writers of fantastic and speculative fiction, but by no means exclusive to any one genre.

Shared Worlds is a writing camp for 8th-12th graders run by the VanderMeers among others. I live only an hour from where they have it so I'm a huge groupie, so I had to laugh when my face was part of the image they're using to promote this upcoming year. I'm sitting in front of Nnedi Okorafor and to the left of the VanderMeers and the alien baby. This year the big name is NK Jemisin!

pickA tad too technical for my purposes in some sections but very clearly an invaluable guide to writing imaginative fiction and fantastical stories. The essay contributed by Ursula LeGuin was particularly compelling not to mention Vandermeer's interview with George RR Martin.
