Ariel: Poems | Sylvia Plath
124 posts | 125 read | 2 reading | 85 to read
A brilliant collection of poetry by Sylvia Plath, one of Americas most famous and significant female authors. It is characterized by deep, psychological introspection paired with ambiguous scenes and narratives. This edition restores Plaths selection and order of poems, eschewing her husbands revisions in favour of the authors pure, unmodified vision. Random House of Canada is proud to bring you classic works of literature in ebook form, with the highest quality production values. Find more today and rediscover books you never knew you loved.

This has been coming up a lot in my life lately so I‘m glad I got a chance to reread it. I haven‘t looked at most of these poems since I was in high school, and, besides being more upset by the occasional racist and ableist language Plath uses, I found the work just as affecting as the first time.

I've been avoiding reviewing Ariel because I know it is a firm favourite of many.

I read The Bell Jar and it spoke to my soul, so I expected Plath's poetry to do the same.

I imagine this collection being popular with those who like their poetry to be read aloud & who favour form & language over clarity of message.

I struggled to extract meaning from a lot of these poems. Without that connection, regretfully, they didn't get beneath my skin.

MicheleinPhilly I appreciate the loveliness of your review. 1y
RaeLovesToRead @MicheleinPhilly Aww, thank you ❤ 1y
Librariana I agree with @MicheleinPhilly 😊 Plus, sincerity is always appreciated! I realize this is historical fiction, but will you be reading 1y
Librariana Also! I want to say that I vaguely remember reading The Bell Jar... it's been a decade or two 😳 But I do recall being a teenager weirdly fascinated by her story... the whole allure of her, her life, her death, etc. I even remember owning a copy of her unabridged journals. I think I wanted to be the kind of teenage girl who loved and understood her writing... carried it around with her... but it sadly went over my head. 1y
RaeLovesToRead @Librariana Thanks! 😊💕 I'd be more likely to read her diaries than a fictionalised account of her life, but I'll probably read the original intended arrangement of Ariel and other selected poems first to see if I connect more. The imagery in her poems jumps about quite a bit, which makes it hard for me to extract meaning. I know she's a lot of people's favourite though. 1y

Have a drink today for my namesake (handle-sake?) Sylvia Plath! If you haven't yet, take an opportunity to read a poem or two. One can never go wrong with Lady Lazarus, naturally. Better yet, there are readings you can find on YouTube of Sylvia reading them herself! Cheers to a light snuffed out too soon...

National Poetry Month: Day 6! ❤📖

This is another Plath poem that I absolutely love! The language is SO beautiful! 💕

On the stiff twig up there
Hunches a wet black rook
Arranging and rearranging its feathers in the rain.
I do not expect a miracle
Or an accident

To set the sight on fire
In my eye, nor seek
Any more in the desultory weather some design
But let spotted leaves fall as they fall
Without ceremony, or portent

"I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life." #OnThisDay in 1963, Sylvia Plath took her life. Most of her success came posthumously, including a Pulitzer Prize won in 1982. She is known and studied around the world for her confessional poetry in the collections Colossus and Ariel, and her semi autobiographical novel The Bell Jar. #HistoryGetsLIT

How fitting that today is world poetry day!

I haven‘t read any poetry in a while and it felt like the right fit for this weekend.

Though, modernly, some of the language is a bit off putting- I still really enjoyed this.

I enjoy poetry even though it doesn‘t come 100% naturally for me. I tend to read through 2 or 3 times, which I think only aids the experience.

Another book off my #bookspinbingo

I read this July 19-23 & rated it 4 ⭐️. Many, many moons ago I‘d read The Bell Jar. Since then I have been interested in reading more Plath but never really sought her poetry out. On one of my poetry buying sprees last year, I came across this book and bought it. While I didn‘t like every poem, I liked it enough to want to read more of her poetry.

📖 Yes! I love poetry! I think sometimes it can be more raw and emotional than fiction can be

📖 I love both actually! I like the liberating feeling of free form style, but also love the rhythm of verse form style!

📖 Ariel by Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton's collected poems, and Emily Dickinson's collected poems 💕📚

Ariel was calling to me from the bookshelf last night, and I told my bf this. He said it meant I should read it. So I dived in. I had a terrible day yesterday and it is exactly what I‘ve needed. I took notice in a new way of Plath‘s use of color. She seems to, be it purposeful or accidental, have a system in how she uses color to personify emotion onto objects. Red is one I noticed; it seems to always be associated with fear, death, or depression.

As always, my poetry disclaimer stands: I'm not an avid reader of verse, so my reviews should be taken with a grain of salt. In this case, I thought Plath had a lovely way with words, but I just didn't like most of the poems. I found them interesting, but they felt too dark for my taste. My favorites were those about the bees. I don't know what it was about them I enjoyed so much, but I'd probably revisit those before any of the others.

Mehso-so

I cannot deny the lure of Plath‘s story. A few poems in, I devoured her entire Wikipedia page. After the last poem, I avidly consumed the “About Sylvia Plath” section, fascinated by her memory, which is quoted, of her first experience of the sea: “When I was learning to creep...my mother set me down on the beach to see what I thought of it. I crawled straight for the coming wave & was just through the wall of green when she caught my heels.”

👇🏻

monalyisha 1/3: I‘m anxious to read her novel, “The Bell Jar,” & I have every expectation of being blown away. And yet...I don‘t feel the same way about her poetry. I loved certain poems: “Tulips”, “Lady Lazarus”, “The Moon and the Yew Tree”, “A Birthday Present”, “The Bee Meeting”, & “Contusion.” Still, this love extends only to six poems: there are over forty in the collection. (edited) 5y
monalyisha 2/3: I found most of them obtuse: the references too specific & the language not lyrical enough (I know, I know) to carry me through the frustrating opacity. For Plath, as she writes in “Totem”, “the world is blood-hot and personal.” She copes by being “personal” right back, but yearning for coldness. I found both of these aspects challenging. 5y
monalyisha 3/3: I‘ll read more Plath. I‘ll try her novel & maybe even more poems. But I haven‘t found a new authorial obsession.

MelleDelValle Try her journals and then re-read Ariel. 5y
monalyisha @MelleDelValle I don‘t know if I‘m that committed to her. 😅 At least not yet. We‘ll see how “The Bell Jar” goes. But thanks for the suggestion! (edited) 5y
mcipher I love The Bell Jar but was never able to get into her poetry - it just didn‘t work for me in the whole. I also love Anne Sexton, but there‘s a bunch of her poems that remind me of Plath and I can‘t get into. Like you said, obtuse and too specific, and often so personal as to not really speak to the reader. Bell Jar is amazing though!! 5y
sixgun @monalyisha I've tried to finish the Bell Jar so many times. It sits right there on my night stand but I can't do it. I just don't see the world as she sees it. Maybe I'll try her poetry. 5y
monalyisha @mcipher It‘s actually really nice to hear from someone who feels the same way! 🙌🏻 5y
ravenlee There‘s an interesting biopic called Sylvia. I think Gwyneth Paltrow might be the lead. 5y
DivineDiana Oh, Sylvia. The myth. The legend. I read The Bell Jar so long ago. Definitely need a reread. Saw a wonderful exhibit of her life at the National Gallery in Washington DC. Not sure about trying the poetry considering your review. 🤔 5y

mrsmarch I wrote a poem about the tail end of winter a few years ago when we had fifteen feet of snow. If Facebook memories tosses it at me, I‘ll share it. 5y
monalyisha @mrsmarch Sounds good! 🙌🏻 5y
gradcat Eerie faces...love this, too! I‘m just sick of the rain...it‘s been going on for what seems like weeks on end! 😕 5y

Ariel: Poems | Sylvia Plath
post image

Still making my way through “Ariel.” This particular poem is a stand-out. 🌘 @TrishB I can see why it‘s your favorite!

Oftentimes, though, I have to admit that I struggle to string together what it is that Plath is trying to say. Her poetry almost makes me feel like I‘ve missed out on an inside joke — though, if it is a joke, it‘s a cruel one; if you know anything about Plath, you know the tone is anything but funny.

TrishB I‘ve been reading Plath since I was 16 (51 now) when my English teacher said she would suit my mood 😱 but I always find something new in them and some new thread and thought. When you read initially you get the surface emotions. I‘ve read a lot of stuff about Plath and poetry crit etc etc. I didn‘t understand most of it when I started and I‘m still learning. 5y
monalyisha @TrishB I haven‘t read a lot of poetry. Full stop. But also, I haven‘t read a lot of poetry that necessitated knowing the poet‘s biography. Working through some feelings about that. 😉 Part of me feels like the text should be able to speak for itself and stand alone (which it does — to a limited extent), & part of me gets that it‘s confessional & personal, & that she wasn‘t going to sacrifice for universality & transparency. 5y
monalyisha @TrishB P.S. How cool to have an author who‘s been with you so long & who has continually revealed herself! 5y

TrishB I read loads of poetry, some of it I don‘t understand the context at all, but I enjoy the words and the emotions. A lot of poetry is like this. I read a lot about Plath because she fascinates me, still! 5y
TrishB I might not read for a while and then pick up and be amazed again. I still have the copy I borrowed from the school library..😁 5y
Suet624 Do you read poetry aloud? Sometimes a poem makes more sense to me and goes deeper inside me when I do that. 😀 5y
monalyisha @Suet64 @TrishB Thanks for the tips! I don‘t struggle with poetry, as a rule. I majored in Literature & delight in language. It‘s just an overall feeling I have with this collection, specifically. Though, as I continue reading more & more poetry this year, I‘ll consider revising my statement about how much I do/don‘t struggle. We shall see. 😅😉 5y
