Meddling Kids
Meddling Kids | Edgar Cantero
For fans of John Dies at the End and Welcome to Night Vale comes a tour de force of horror, humor, and H.P. Lovecraft. The surviving members of a forgotten teenage detective club (and their dog) must reunite as broken adults to finally solve the terrifying case that ruined them all and sent the wrong man to prison. Scooby Doo and the gang never had to do this! 1990. The teen detectives once known as the Blyton Summer Detective Club (of Blyton Hills, a small mining town in the Zoinx River Valley in Oregon) are all grown up and haven t seen each other since their fateful, final case in 1977. Andy, the tomboy, is twenty-five and on the run, wanted in at least two states. Keri, one-time kid genius and budding biologist, is bartending in New York, working on a serious drinking problem. At least she s got Sean, an excitable Weimeraner descended from the original canine member of the team. Nate, the horror nerd, has spent the last thirteen years in and out of mental health institutions, and currently resides in an asylum in Arhkam, Massachusetts. The only friend he still sees is Peter, the handsome jock turned movie star. The problem is, Peter s been dead for years. The time has come to uncover the source of their nightmares and return to where it all began in 1977. This time, it better not be a man in a mask. The real monsters are waiting. With raucous humor and brilliantly orchestrated mayhem, Edgar Cantero s Meddling Kids taps into our shared nostalgia for the books and cartoons we grew up with, and delivers an exuberant, eclectic, and highly entertaining celebration of horror, life, friendship, and many-tentacled, interdimensional demon spawn."

I love scooby doo so this book disappointed me. I felt like he wrote about women in a kinda icky way, I liked the mystery and some of the one liners but the whole Andy and Kerri dynamic felt forced.

Once I got over what I expected this to be, I was able to really enjoy it, although I may not be smart enough to have fully understood it. I definitely would not recommend trying to read it quickly, because it‘s very detailed and smart.
Obviously Tim the dog was my favorite ❤️🐶❤️, but I also loved the humor.
I would love to see this on film, and would definitely read any more books in the series if they were available.

This was cute. I loved the concept. Scooby Doo is one of my favorite cartoons ever, but this did fall all a little flat for me. The story just wasn‘t enough for me fully. I got bored in parts and other times I thought it was a little over the top. I didn‘t think it was awful, but I didn‘t love this one as much as I wanted to.

When I saw someone call this an adult version of Scooby Doo, I knew I had it pick it up. And frankly, I wasn't disappointed. This is definitely Scooby Doo all grown up, with queer characters, suicide, mental illness, and real monsters. The writing style flips from second to third person to a screenplay and back again. It's fast-paced and a wild ride from start to finish. I absolutely adored this book.

A delightful romp into what happens to your local friend group after life and eldritch horrors get to them. There's a lot of similes. Like, a LOT. However when you get past the constant nostalgia callbacks, it's a great book.

This book is very accurately described as Scooby Doo meets H.P. Lovecraft. I went back and forth between really enjoying it and absolutely hating it. Therefore, it's landed here in so-so land. The action and mystery was fun, but I hated the romance and all the unneeded descriptions. I really wish I could've just cut out about 1/3 of it. However, it has made me want to rewatch some episodes of Scooby Doo.

shanaqui Ha, yeah, it definitely left me feeling nostalgic! 2y

Icy roads this morning (and quite a few wrecks on my normal route because we‘re Texans and don‘t know how to do this). So I didn‘t go to work. But, because the school isn‘t closed, and my boss and instructors and “kids” are all there, and because I NEVER call in, I‘m feeling a little guilty. But only a little.

If you grew up watching Scooby-Doo like I did, you'll recognize the parallels here - four young people and a dog unmasking the villains behind mysterious circumstances who would have gotten away with their crimes if it weren't for those 'meddling kids'. There was no way I could pass this one up! ⬇️

BookDragonNotWorm What starts out as a nostalgic walk down memory lane quickly takes a sinister turn as the amateur detectives reunite to revisit their last - and most memorable - case, the one that's left them all struggling their own types of PTSD into adulthood. As they delve into the mystery, the story deviates from the Scooby track as they find themselves up against an enemy of supernatural proportions. I liked it, but it wasn't what I was expecting.

2y
VioletBramble I liked this one as well. I thought the sections where it switched from normal narrative to movie script format were weird, but liked it otherwise. There's a sentence in the book -- Summer came early, and yellow, and mint flavored -- that I just love and have been writing that on my calendar in June every year since I read the book. 2y
BookDragonNotWorm @VioletBramble I thought the switch was odd as well. And I kind of wish it had stayed true to Scooby form instead of taking a Lovecraftian turn, but there's no denying the author's a good writer! 2y

As a Scooby Doo junkie when I was a kid I definitely was bought in. The characters were different and grown up but the similarities were obvious. The story got a little long about 3/4 of the way through but I stuck it out and am glad I did. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

So I bought this on a whim, cuz I heard it was a mashup of Scooby-Doo and H. P. Lovecraft and I‘m a fan of Lovecraft (and Scooby-Doo! 😅). It was pretty good. Characters were pretty well rendered; story took some interesting turns. The writing was pretty awful, if I‘m being honest, but the story was still unique enough to get a pass. So yeah. Ok book overall. A good fun light read.

I…hated this book and only finished it out of pure spite. Men should never, ever write lesbians, because it generally turns into some weird fetish thing? Also Andy was reallll predatory, and while Kerri was having a panic attack, there were two whole paragraphs about their boobs touching? Not to mention some transphobia and page-long run-on sentences… I‘m very disappointed.

#campreads #summerreads #badbook

MsRadioSilence Also I don‘t want to hear “well, it was set in the 1970‘s,” that‘s not an excuse for a cast of non-trans characters to be transphobic. It‘s tasteless. 3y
MsRadioSilence Also also, really could‘ve done without the ghost/hallucination being racist AND homophobic, thanks. We get it, he‘s an asshole. 3y

First finished book of #20in4

I have mixed feelings about this one - it switches to screenplay at random intervals; there‘s purple prose and tortured metaphors galore; there are strange breaks to the 4th wall, for example two lines being left blank followed by “After a pause lasting two lines...”; many run on sentences, including one that lasted for two pages... and yet I didn‘t struggle to finish it. 🤨

I loved everything about this book except for the chaotic action scenes at the end. Cantero's language is amazing but it didn't leave room for clarity in a fight scene. Also, so much verbing of nouns. 🤣 Otherwise, a fun romp through Blyton Hills after the lives of the BSDC fall apart following their last case and their return to magical madness! February #bookspin nailed! @TheAromaofBooks

If H.P. Lovecraft and Scooby Doo had a baby, and then that baby grew up to break out of an insane asylum and found the Necronomicon, that is the best way to describe this book. I loved it, from start to finish.

It was fun comparing this to the Scooby Doo series. Some similarities but still an original idea. A group of teen detectives, now adults, still dealing with emotional damage from their last case together. My only complaint is sometimes the descriptions were too flowery and overly complicated. I really liked the story and the supernatural elements. This was a great read.

I‘m not sure what to say about this one. It was weird- sometimes good weird, sometimes bad weird. The pacing felt inconsistent and at times overly detailed. A lot of gratuitous swearing, which I don‘t mind at all, but it felt forced and disingenuous, as did several of the subplots. The concept of adult Scooby Doo is awesome, but it just fell flat for me. I‘m also not at all sure how this is supposed to be classified as horror.

I‘m on the board! My first book for my #bookspinbingo board. (Currently working on my bookspin)
It was okay but you can‘t help comparing to Scooby Doo which just threw me off the entire time.(Also Scooby Doo was my fave cartoon as kid) I think if that wasn‘t an issue I would have liked more. There was some good banter between two characters though so somewhere in the middle for me.

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes it seems like an author should just do their own thing instead almost-someone-else's thing! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm When I saw the cover, I honestly thought it was a grown-up telling of Scooby-Doo and the gang. I didn‘t expect it was an entirely different group basically masquerading. 😅 That‘s a bit disappointing. 🤦‍♀️ 4y

Former kid detectives who grew up into troubled adults get together to re-investigate their last case, the source of their dysfunction.

A mash-up of Scooby Doo, the Famous Five, and H. P. Lovecraft.

All in all, it was OK in a spot the reference sort of way, but I won't be rushing out to find more of the author's work.
