Meddling Kids
Meddling Kids | Edgar Cantero
For fans of John Dies at the End and Welcome to Night Vale comes a tour de force of horror, humor, and H.P. Lovecraft. The surviving members of a forgotten teenage detective club (and their dog) must reunite as broken adults to finally solve the terrifying case that ruined them all and sent the wrong man to prison. Scooby Doo and the gang never had to do this! 1990. The teen detectives once known as the Blyton Summer Detective Club (of Blyton Hills, a small mining town in the Zoinx River Valley in Oregon) are all grown up and haven t seen each other since their fateful, final case in 1977. Andy, the tomboy, is twenty-five and on the run, wanted in at least two states. Keri, one-time kid genius and budding biologist, is bartending in New York, working on a serious drinking problem. At least she s got Sean, an excitable Weimeraner descended from the original canine member of the team. Nate, the horror nerd, has spent the last thirteen years in and out of mental health institutions, and currently resides in an asylum in Arhkam, Massachusetts. The only friend he still sees is Peter, the handsome jock turned movie star. The problem is, Peter s been dead for years. The time has come to uncover the source of their nightmares and return to where it all began in 1977. This time, it better not be a man in a mask. The real monsters are waiting. With raucous humor and brilliantly orchestrated mayhem, Edgar Cantero s Meddling Kids taps into our shared nostalgia for the books and cartoons we grew up with, and delivers an exuberant, eclectic, and highly entertaining celebration of horror, life, friendship, and many-tentacled, interdimensional demon spawn."

“So this is a witch‘s house?” she said. She checked the spiraling ornaments of the porch lamps and the handrail, the silent wooden wind chime, the withered Christmas wreath on the door. “Looks like the place of an old lady that never got married “
“That‘s Puritan for witch” Nate said, as he knocked again.

I liked this book well enough though the format was weird- novel like and then script like-, with overly descriptive action sequences.

⭐️⭐️ A millennial Scooby-like gang plus real monsters is such a fun idea, but I struggled. I don‘t think Cantero intended the characters to be unlikeable, but they‘re all annoying AF. That, combined with clunky and choppy formatting (somehow it‘s both 🤷🏼‍♀️), was a bummer, because I liked the story, just not the execution.

PS. Kerri‘s hair is orange, y‘all. In case you missed the 8,000 times it‘s mentioned. 😬

mcctrish I liked this so much more than some others in this genre 2mo

It‘s not subtle. Cantero doesn‘t just give nods to HP and Scooby, but that doesn‘t keep it from being original. Cantero has a very unique style, particularly when describing characters and action scenes. Plethora of twists: Some predictable, but some surprising. Highly recommend.

This is really a two and half star book to me; however, the funny one-liners helped move it to three stars. I thought this book was supposed to be about an adult Scooby Doo crew solving mysteries but it was more sci-fi (think Lovecraft) which is not my jam.

This book was something else. While I absolutely loved the nod to Scooby Doo with the title and the theme, it was a lot to handle. There was so much going on in this novel that is was so hard for me to follow. It genre hopped all over the place from horror to campy comedy to mystery to romance.

It is definitely an interesting read, but not one I will go back to again. Cantero has delightful ideas which kept me reading until the end.

My other current read ? I'm reading this one with Andrew. It's been on my radar for awhile, but when we started reading books together I knew I had to get a copy. Then I found it at the used book store with @Blueberry ! He's really into Lovecraft/Cthulu stuff & I kept seeing this called a "Scooby Doo-Lovecraft mashup." I was also getting Stranger Things vibes. Still waiting for it to get real juicy, but excited for the adventure ahead.

I started out enjoying this campy nostalgic tale, but towards the end, I just found myself wanting it to be over. On one hand I appreciate what the author was trying to do, but the dialogue killed it for me. The short, choppy conversations became exhausting to listen to.

There were parts I really enjoyed though, and I loved Tim and his penguin.🐕💚 Tim is the reason it's a So-So and not a Pan for me.

TheReadingMermaid Please let me know what you think about it. I'm interested to hear your opinion 😃 8mo
Addison_Reads @TheReadingMermaid I only made it through about 2 hours today. So far it's campy, and fun, but there's a lot of different story lines being brought up and I'm curious to see where the author is headed. This is one of those books though that I'm liking so far on audio, but from the writing style I am not sure I'd feel the same with the print version. 8mo

There are entire paragraphs written in a single sentence like the ramblings of a 10-year old. The plot has way too much going on. There are entire scenes that I had to tell myself to forget about for the sake of finishing the book. I enjoyed the characters, but not the dialogue. All in all, I'm disappointed. :/ #horror #scary #mystery #lovecraft #comedy #dark #monster

Why are they just blundering into everything? Kerri needs to stand up for herself and tell to stop their pushy selves and think things through before they walk into a dangerous situation. I get that they need to solve the mystery so they can move on with their lives, but why do they have to just rush into everything and do everything the same night the get to Blyton? 😔 well, I guess Scooby-Doo and the gang always rushed into situations.

MaleficentBookDragon Thank goodness. I thought iI was the only one who didn't love this book. I wanted to love it. A Scooby-Doo like caper for adults with paranormal themes? Perfect for me. I hyped it up too much in my head and it just fell short. I think if it didn't try and take itself so seriously it could have been a lot of fun. 13mo

nosferatoos The language used for trans/intersex people in the first fifty pages was so awful and cringy and should have never been used in print in 2017.... Cantero also writes like every line in his book is the most clever thing ever written and I hate it. 12mo
