A Good Neighborhood | Therese Anne Fowler

This book has broken my heart. I sobbed and felt sick with dread whilst reading it. I did not want this story to end the way it did. The inevitability is appalling. The characters are uttterly believable and grab hold of your heart to wrench its strings through the absolutely vile desires and deeds that run rampant in some. Love, trees, race and selfishness. Read this book. It will stay with me for a long time.

Anxious People: A Novel | Fredrik Backman

You don't have to have anxiety to read Anxious People by Fredrik Backman but if you do I think this book may help you feel a little better, at least for a while. Profoundly human and insightful as always, and writtten deceptively simply about the ordinariness of ordinary people and their ordinary lives. His stories are so moving that we cannot help but appreciate how beautiful it is to be ordinary because that's how we become extraordinary.

Betty: A novel | Tiffany McDaniel

Here is the second novel by the wonderful storyteller Tiffany McDaniel. 'Betty' has consumed me over the last couple of days. The stories Tiffany (I want her to be my friend) tells of cruelty and love, grief and family, nature and the past, and the absolute necessity of stories themselves, will take your breath. I don't think this book will ever truly leave me. Read it now. Or when it's cheaper ❤📚

Am a couple of chapters in and enjoying it so far. I loved Miss Garnet's Angel and Mr Golightly's Holiday back in the day so I have high hopes for this ... ❤📚

Have come home from work because I have the lurgy and need something quite light to read with my Lemsip (other cold and flu relief drinks are available) until I fall asleep. Hope this does the trick. And it was only 99p on Kindle ❤📚

So, I'm settling down to start this. I mentioned that I would like it and my brother- and sister-in-law kindly obliged for my birthday. I love the feeling of excitement and anticipation of holding a new book in your hands (and sniffing it) ...❤📚

Just finished my first book of 2019 (started it this morning and took advantage of my pyjamas and duvet day whilst recovering from the excesses of last night) and what a pleasure it was to read. Even better than I had anticipated. I found myself really invested in all the characters because off the authenticity, gentle humour and sympathy of the writing. Will definitely read his newest one at some point this year. Happy New Year all 📚

Yeah, so this book broke my heart. Broke. My. Heart. It's absolutely wonderful: beautiful, poetic, bulging with love and loneliness, and breathtaking. It made me cry. I think everyone should read it. I'll remember this book for a very long time and I'll definitely return to it. Treat yourself, if Father Christmas doesn't, and buy it. Seriously.

Why have I never read this before? It is terrifying? Lucy is getting sicker and sicker. I have off work for three days. Am now starring to worry a bit about what may actually be wrong with me...

Finished this after a recommendation from my best friend, who is a Yorkshire lass. Very bleak and like granite but, oh, such love...

Right, so I've just stayed up reading this past my bedtime and I've really found it overwhelming. This book is so funny and horrifying and sad and will stay with me for a long time. I love the musicality of the Irish voice and found myself smiling from ear to ear whilst reading. Except when I was laughing out loud or sobbing. This book is important. Give yourself a massive treat and read it. ❤📚 The power of love and acceptance 💛

The Slap: A Novel | Christos Tsiolkas

So, I know I'm late to the party here, but I'm feeling conflicted about The Slap. I love novels with numerous perspectives and I really like the premise of this one but I really hate the two male characters whose points of view I've read so far: Hector and Harry. I feel little, if any, sympathy for them. Surely men aren't really so coarse and vile? I'm sticking with it but I am repulsed by the men I've read about so far though...

Have just finished this and am awestruck. Sympathetic and beautifully observed, with episodes of horror so excoriating that I swore out loud. But there are also moments of love and redemption that soothe the heart. Reminiscent in some ways of Beloved by Toni Morrison and a reminder of The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom this is a book that I think won't ever fully leave me. I have six words for you: read it, read it, read it.

HotCocoaReads I thought the same about it having a similar feeling to Beloved. 7y
