Dracula
Dracula | Bram Stoker
Abraham "Bram" Stoker (November 8, 1847 ? April 20, 1912) was an Irish writer, best remembered as the author of the influential horror novel Dracula. In his honor, the Horror Writers Association recognizes "superior achievement" in horror writing with the Bram Stoker Award. He supplemented his income by writing a large number of novels, his most famous being the vampire tale Dracula which he published in 1897. Before writing Dracula, Stoker spent eight years researching European folklore and stories of vampires. Dracula is an epistolary novel, written as collection of diary entries, telegrams, and letters from the characters, as well as fictional clippings from the Whitby and London newspapers. Stoker's inspiration for the story was a visit to Slains Castle near Aberdeen. The bleak spot provided an excellent backdrop for his creation.

*RE-READ* I needed to revisit this old favorite, to check it off The List, and I picked a good time to do it. I love how 🦇 💩 everything is in this book. It‘s just one insane journey to the next. It‘s not the same as the movies (as some of my fellow students asked) but I feel it‘s better. There‘s an oppressive, ominous presence that permeates the narrative. Mina‘s a boss. Shoulda named my daughter for her. I love it. 😊 209/1,001 #1001Books

I vowed to read all 10 books from the Ice Nine Kills 'Every trick in the book'. This is the second.
3. Bloodbath and Beyond - Dracula
7. Alice - Go Ask Alice
I'm slowly getting to it! So it was ok. I didn't really care for how it was written in letters and diary entries. But great story none the less. I give it 3.5 outta 5🍪

I picked the 1931 version of Dracula with Bela Lugosi for my #scarepair for week 1‘s #Screamthon challenge, because I hadn‘t seen it. It‘s not much of a scare, lol. It‘s only 75 minutes long so a lot of the book was left out and also a couple of main characters. Harker doesn‘t go to Transylvania, Renfield does. Dr. Seward is Mina‘s father in the movie. There are several other changes.

Bookzombie Also, there is a shot of a possum crawling into a coffin. I think they were used to look like large rats. There is another shot with armadillos. I looked it up and both of those animals appear to live only in North and South America and not in Transylvania. 4mo

I can finally take Dracula off of my TBR!!!!
I read and listened to the novel. I enjoyed it overall. At times it dragged a bit and I think that had more to do with already being so familiar with the story. I did think it was sometimes a bit repetitive and it felt like most of that came from Van Helsing. I loved the format of diary entries and letters though.
I included Count von Count in my graphic because every time I mentioned Dracula ⬇️

What a great reading experience! Because this work is the subject of so much imitation/ parody reading the original text is a hoot. It comes off as camp which I wasn‘t expecting at all. Spooky, weird & surprisingly hilarious.

I found the first 65% of this to be pretty compelling. It had been a long time since I‘d read a classic and I was pleasantly surprised by this one. But the end was tougher. I was sort of filled with dread. Proud to finish it, in the end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#ThatsClassic - October - Book One: Dracula -
It‘s good to be participating in this book club. Already with the first book selection I have revisited a much loved classic that I probably would have never read again. It was as spooky & maddening as the first time around. There are many repeated descriptions and delayed sharing of vital information in the book, but that doesn‘t bother me. What is spot on —> this vampire is a true bloody fiend.👇🏽

Nute THIS rendition of Dracula is not “an okay vampire” or one of the “nice type” vampires. He is depicted as an evil monstrosity. It is factual that Drac seems to be MIA in much of the book that is about him. Still this book is a fight of, dare I say, good versus evil...dare I whisper, a battle for human souls. For that reason it rates high as an atmospheric gothic experience of true horror to me. It remains a favorite literary classic! (edited) 1y
TheNeverendingTBR This cover! 😍 1y
Annie1215 Thanks for reading along! I also lives starting with this one - the true definition of a classic. It‘s funny to reflect back on this canon of vampire after there have been so many modern versions. 1y

batsy That's a fabulous cover! 1y
Gissy Love that cover!😱 1y
Nute @Annie1215 Yes! That is probably my most enjoyment of the reread of Dracula - being reminded of the more traditional sense of what a vampire is (*monster* *evil entity*) and the real life dread associated with vampirism folklore back in the day. 1y
eeclayton Agreed. I like it too that Drac is not the least romanticized in any way, there's no touching backstory, just pure evil. 1y
Nute @TheNeverendingTBR @batsy @Gissy Thank you!😌 I really like this collection of books designed by Ruben Toledo. He designed for six titles only...I guess that he is more renowned as a fashion illustrator, and his real profession lies there in. (edited) 1y
Nute @eeclayton Not romanticized at all! For running into a vampire late night in a back alley, please let it be the Cullens!😆 This vampire, Dracula...no late night encounters at all EVER!😱 (edited) 1y

Alright, I still think the first half of the book is the best half of the book. I think the ladies got the short end of the stick but considering when it was written... 🤷‍♀️.
By far the most terrifying thing about this book was the blood transfusions. Is no one ever going to cross type blood and make sure you don‘t kill her with that? 🤯🤯😂🤣
I have some problems with the book but overall it was an enjoyable read.

I‘ve been putting this off for so long but I‘m glad I finally jumped into it. The first half is probably my favorite part of the story so far, we‘ll see how it ends and if my opinion changes. It does get a little repetitive, same descriptions used over and over for something. Like, I got it,👌 it‘s all good. 😂 Almost done, great cast for this story though. Really good listen.

Enjoy Dracula, except "voice" of Van Helsing. Does anyone know why he is written to speak so awkwardly? Is it to highlight he is from Amsterdam? I find the parts where he explains things to be the only slow parts, although I quit trying to figure out exactly what he was saying, just getting the gist of it?. #TeamHarkness #Scarathlon2020 #Screamathon @StayCurious @4thhouseontheleft

I have mixed feelings.

Pluses: modern science - blood transfusions, phonograph recordings. Great, shocking imagery.

Wishes: I could have beheaded the vampire quicker than those professional hunters and doctors. Van Helsing aggravated the snot out of me. His disuse of verb tense and his irritating way of saying - I won't tell you now, we have time to wait, it will all become clear soon.
