This book is more of a motivation for us aspiring astronauts. Being in this field the book had a lot of scientific elements explained in a neat way for every reader to understand without any difficulty . I'm just thinking what if they made the movie with two parts explaining the book neatly . This book explains a fictional test of human endurance which may occur in space travel...

‘Tis the gift giving season! 🎁

1. I love when people gift me their favorite books. When people give me books that speak to their hearts, I feel very loved. ❤️
2. I have given so many copies of this book. It‘s so funny and kind of sneaky sci fi.
3. I absolutely would. I‘d want a first edition of a collection of fairy tales. Andersen or Grimm or Perrault.

#SundayFunday Have a wonderful day and make sure to tag me! 💚

Tried an audiobook reread, but it didn't work out for me. Enjoyed the book, but didn't finding it suitable for a reread since much of the fun was in seeing how he figured things out. Also didn't care for the narrator's style.

Unpopular opinion time! I think this book is overrated. Sorry guys! I do think the detail is impressive, but not being a science person my eyes glazed over in most of the super technical sections. I didn‘t actually like Mark. He‘s kind of a chauvinist tool. Having a woman as the captain of the Mars crew didn‘t help to dampen the sexism throughout. Perhaps my never-ending love for Matt Damon will make the film more enjoyable for me.

RamsFan1963 I agree with you. I like the movie but I bailed on the book. 6mo

I really enjoyed this movie and so far, I think they did a great job of condensing a lot of technical info into something relatable. Unfortunately, I'm getting lost in the technicalities here. I just picked this back up but after 3 pages, I'm struggling again. 😫 I feel like I could understand high school French better than computer jargon.

Bookgirl I just read his Project Hail Mary and it was the same. So. Much. Skimming. 6mo

Very enjoyable. I did at times feel like my autistic brother was describing his most recent obsession to me in way more detail than I wanted. However, as with my brother, I patiently sat through it and nodded as if I cared, knowing that something better would be coming down the pipeline soon. Loved the conversational writing style and now I'm stoked to watch the movie.

#CuriousCovers - Orange: This is what I wrote on Goodreads while reading this book in 2015...
Okay, this is how it went:
- I'm in SUPER Cheer Mode. He better survive.
- Goodness, I'm pulling my hair out.
- Pheew!
- Potatoes...need to learn 100 recipes!
- You gotta be kidding me?
- Never say never.
- What the ****!
- I give up. He's full of hope. I'm full of despair.
- Cry Me a River🎶(or any song about some river or maybe Wade in the Water).
👇🏽

Nute - Good grief!
- Will there ever be relief?
- Pray, dude! You need Jesus!!!
- OMG!

Time to see the movie! Oh yeah, if I'm ever in a dismally bleak situation and some crazy power can be bestowed upon a fictional character to come to life...well, you know who gets my VIP pass....especially if the ingenue of botany can bring the light of day!

According to GoodReads, I marked this as “Want to Read” on April 20, 2015. Today is January 19, 2021.

It... took a few years. So far, it seems good. Kind of wish I‘d read the book first so I didn‘t constantly see the main character as Matt Damon. I didn‘t see it in the theater but I did see it at home. But I might never have picked it up to read without the movie so... thanks, Matt, I guess.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - wow...just wow! Listened to this on audible (would recommend listening to this particular read) and it was incredible. Written as if you are listening back to the Mars logs made by the astronaut Mark Watney, it immediately immersed me into the adventure (the fact the film is one of my favourites doesn‘t come into it), possibly the first book that made me nervous, happy, downhearted and more. 1000% must read!

It‘s a very uplifting book, I especially loved Mark‘s dry wit all through the mission. There was an awesome LOTR-reference that my inner geek just LOVED (I legit squealed). I was really intrigued to see all the solutions he came up with. At certain moments it got a bit too technical for me but I would sort of read through it without worrying if I understood the science behind it.

The sheer amount of knowledge that went into writing this book, as well as the level of brainpower, is mind-boggling to me. The technology is either real or extremely realistic; if there are scientific or factual errors, it's far beyond me to suss them out. And on top of that, to make the story fascinating, and to include quite a lot of humor to leaven it all, is quite an achievement.

julesG Good review. Mirrors my thoughts. I read somewhere that Weir asked NASA for help with some of the scientific and technical facts but they didn't help and he had to find out by himself. I admire the research stamina. 1y
