The Explosion Chronicles
The Explosion Chronicles: A Novel | Yan Lianke
26 posts | 4 read | 9 to read
Man Booker International finalist Yan Lianke has been lauded for his imaginative satire and insightful cultural critique as "one of Chinas greatest living authors" (Guardian). His internationally bestselling new novel, The Explosion Chronicles, follows the excessive expansion of a rural community from small village to megalopolis. With the Yi River on one side and the Balou Mountains on the other, the village of Explosion was founded more than a millennium ago by refugees fleeing a seismic volcanic eruption. But in the post-Mao era the name takes on a new significance as the community grows explosively from a small village to a vast metropolis. Behind this rapid expansion are members of the communitys three major families, including the four Kong brothers; Zhu Ying, the daughter of the former village chief; and Cheng Qing, who starts out as a secretary and goes on to become a powerful political and business figure. Linked together by a complex web of loyalty, betrayal, desire, and ambition, these figures are the driving force behind their hometowns transformation into an urban superpower. Brimming with absurdity, intelligence, and wit, The Explosion Chronicles considers the high stakes of passion and power, the consequences of corruption and greed, the polarizing dynamics of love and hate between families, as well as humankinds resourcefulness through the vicissitudes of life.

This was not the easiest book to read. Although the narrative was not particularly difficult to follow, the fact that it's a Chinese translation of an allegorical, magic-realist metafictional chronical of a tiny village growing to a megalopolis might have something to do with it. It's rewarding, bizarre and satirical tho. The growth is accomplished by scheming, theft and prostitution mainly carried out by one family and their connections.

The story of the development of society, rampant greediness and what we are willing to sacrifice for the prosperity.

In Lianke's wonderfully warped, 'mythorealist,' satirical tale of China's hyper-modernization, flora flowers and fauna fauns, fairytale-like, based on the actions of two feuding families in the village of Explosion. I don't like satire as a general rule, and as with any satire, had no emotional connection to any of the characters, yet found this novel strangely and all but completely transfixing.

Simona I changed my opinion about emotional connections with the characters in satirical books after I've had read The Four Books. I don't think that the problem is (at least not for me) in the satirical style, but in the discussed topic. 7y

Lindy @shawnmooney Your comment made me giggle. Bring on the wacky plot twists. 😄 8y
shawnmooney @Lindy 😂😂Indeed! Have you read any Lianke? I figure it's more sociable to ask you here rather than check Goodreads. 😀 8y
Lindy @shawnmooney Nope, never. But I am intrigued by coffins hidden in blueprints. 8y

Every time a member of the Kong family does anything momentous in this novel, the surrounding flora goes nuts…lushly bonkers.

This novel, like the other one of Lianke's I read, is just bonkers! I do not at all mean this in a bad way.

Simona Have you read The Four Books? 8y
shawnmooney @Simona No, but I want to! The only other of his that I've read is the novella 8y
Simona It's the story with the similar vibes, satirical style with beautiful prose and some supernatural elements, but set in the re-education camp. I like it more than Explosion, probably, because of the content - absurdity of the communism, topic very dear to me 🤷‍♀️. I also find interesting, that despite censorship of literary works in China, his highly critical works, find their way to the publication. 8y

The basic story is simple-we read the chronicle about growth of the village into the city. When villagers taste the power of money, the development starts to rotate at high speed. It's story written in a satirical style, with mythorealism elements, story about the progress of society and what we are willing/forced to sacrifice for prosperity. It isn't fun or enjoyable read, the story is absurd, bizarre, but it is important and thought provoking.

Laura317 You nailed it. I struggled through it, but did think it was a worthwhile book. 8y
Simona @Laura317 Last year I read The Four Books, so I was ready to struggle with this one. Usually I'm reading books about which I don't know nothing, or a very little. But for his works, I think, it's better to know with what you are dealing and what to expect. Yes, it's absolutely worth the effort. 8y

I'm going to start the season for #ManBookerInternationalPrize2017 with this book. Lianke was nominee on shortlist last year and The Four Books was my pick for the winner. My expectations are high!

Simona @Laalaleighh The atmosphere and the writing style is similar ... but it is set in different time period and it seems to me as if I'm reading the sequel. 🤔 8y
Laalaleighh @simona really? I'll have to add it to my list as well then! 8y
