Andrea comes to Barcelona to live with family while attending university. Once there, she learns things are not good in her family home and she makes few friends attending class. Yet, she perseveres through a difficult year to finally find her way. The mood of much of this book is dark, but the detail in creating that mood and the hope in the end made it a light pick.

Haven'y read more siple, yet simply beautiful day-to-day life story since "The Club of thre Incorrigible Optimists". To me this book was simply perfect.

#Readaroundtheworld #Spain Published when the author was 23, this coming of age story turns around a family damaged by the Spanish civil war. Their dysfunction and descent into violence, manipulation, penury and gnawing hunger reflects the fracture of all of Spain at that time.

Nada is not the usual coming-of-age story. Although she lives in a depressing house in Barcelona, #Spain, with her grandmother and uncles, Andrea‘s zest for life ultimately dominates. She defies poverty, hunger and hostility. Her character contrasts sharply with the dark relatives in the dilapidated house, and Laforet describes it all vividly. A Crazy little book about an orphan Spanish young woman who goes to live with her crazy family so she can study.
You hate and want to kill most of them at some point, but you also recognize yourself and your family in some scale.
It's like reading an early Almodóvar movie 🤣
