Harriet Hume
Harriet Hume: A London Fantasy | Rebecca West
7 posts | 4 read | 13 to read
In this modern fairy tale, Rebecca West transports her reader with a tale of the polar opposites of mind and spirit, love and power Harriet Humes unchanging beauty and commitment to her art stand in stark contrast to Arnold Condorexs more worldly goals. After a romantic tryst, she discovers that she can read his mind, but Arnold, with his sights set on moving up in the world, quickly parts from the mysterious lady. As they encounter each other over the years, Harriets intuitive powers continue to unsettle Arnold, opening his eyes to the darker elements of his political and financial aspirations, even as he remains drawn to her. Beautifully drawn and filled with magical touches, Wests fantasy explores innate and learned gender roles, as her characters uncover the mystery surrounding their otherworldly connection.

Leftcoastzen @BarbaraBB @batsy @LeahBergen These are from Dial Press , 2 of them published in 1980 , 1 of them , 1983.In the used bookstore, I‘ve trained my eyes to seek out black & green viragos! 5y
merelybookish They are gorgeous. Do you know the difference between the green and black? Is it just years (so in the 80s they switched colours) or thematic? Just curious! 5y
Leftcoastzen @merelybookish I believe it was publication contracts, Virago had a U.S. deal with Dial Press , maybe they were responsible for design colors /elements . My green Viragos are split between UK Viragos and U.S.Penguins , both used green and the same design elements. 5y

Pickpick

What a weird book! Is Harriet real, an angel, a ghost, or a figment of Arnold‘s imagination? Is he the up-and-coming statesman we think he is, or is he an enreliable narrator? So many questions!! This book needs a book club. I‘m not sure if I liked this, but I certainly want to discuss it, so I think I liked it lol. #1001books #reading1001 #tbrchallenge

Next up! My copy has a library fix title page—typed up in 1959! I think this one has lasted longer than the original did. #reading1001 #1001books

Mehso-so

Rebecca West shows us a man who thinks highly of himself but by kowing his thoughts we know he is actually rather stupid and one-dimensional. Because Harriet can read his thoughts she also knows, while at the same time she knows he's thinking the same of her. I like this construction and have the feeling Harriet and we as readers make fun of Arnold. However, with 300 pages and long monologues it felt a bit too long to my taste. #1001books

I had no idea that after reading my first Virago Modern Classic 🍎, I'd become an instantaneous obsessive. I own tons and they keep releasing more! These are a few I could easily pull from a few shelf cubbies. #JoiningAFanClub #JuneTunz #VMC

EvieBee @vivastory It was awesome, Scott! Apart from really bad sunburns, we got a lot of reading done and took in the views. 🤓😎 7y
EvieBee @Susannah Susannah, most of my older ones were always priced for $1 in the clearance section of Half Price Books. Gah, I miss that store soooooo much! Now I have to rely on what's available online. 7y
vivastory @EvieBee84 is your husband a big reader? I'm glad to hear that you had a great time 7y
EvieBee @vivastory He is, but he doesn't share any of my reading interests lol! We pretty only agree on documentaries. 😂 7y

#booknerdproblems when a book has an odd font... and you think, nope forget this one ✋ !

RealLifeReading What is that about?? That's so weird 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Hmmm. Note that only the "s's" followed by a "t" have that little mark over them. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @RealLifeReading @Donna_sBookMinute yes exactly! Just too distracting. 8y
