A Local Habitation (Toby Daye Book 2)
A Local Habitation (Toby Daye Book 2) | Seanan McGuire
22 posts | 59 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
The second instalment of the highly praised Toby Daye series. October Toby Daye is a changeling, daughter of a fae and a mortal man. Like her mother, she able to read what has happened to a person through a mere taste of their blood. Toby is the only changeling who has earned knighthood, and she earns that position every day, undertaking assignments for her liege, Sylvester, the Duke of the Shadowed Hills. Now Sylvester has asked her to go to the County of Tamed Lightning otherwise known as Fremont, California to check up on his niece, Countess January O'Leary. A baby-sitting assignment or so it would seem; but Toby soon discovers that someone has begun murdering people close to January: if Toby can't find the killer, she may well become the next victim.

Hey librarians of litsy, question

My copy of A local habitation that I got from library has this weird printing issue. Every other page the words are double printed which makes the font look blurry. If I hold it far enough away, the words look fine but if I hold it close while reading it‘s blurry. if I inform my librarians of this will they do anything with the book or will they just ignore it and I will be wasting their time.

julesG I'm not a librarian, but I'd tell them. 1y
Clare-Dragonfly I would tell them. In my experience, information from a patron is never time wasted to a librarian. 1y
Sweetkokoro @julesG and @Clare-Dragonfly I notified the librarians and they were grateful for me doing so, they said they would contact the publishers to see about getting a replacement. 14mo

Mehso-so

Second in the October Daye series, which appears on the Hugo ballot this year in the "Best Series" category. In this one, Toby's liege sends her to check on his niece who has gone incommunicado. Toby finds the niece running a tech startup whose employees are mysteriously dying. I found it a just-okay fantasy and a frustrating mystery: overlong and underpaced, with a detective who doesn't ask questions that seemed obvious to me.

I really liked the idea of this one, bringing computer technology and the fae together. Also still like the MC, she‘s both kick-ass and fallible and that makes her very likeable to me. I could have done with fewer deaths though. Guess I prefer a proper happy ending☺️

Saw Seanan McGuire, and just listened to Peter Brennan. Am not sure who I want to see at4- too many choices. Thanks @tpixie for helping me try and locate other Littens!

tpixie Yay!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️ there‘s so much to choose from but no matter what it‘ll be great! You could even check out the kids authors downstairs — sometimes they‘re real fun and always easy to get into! The ones I saw were very animated lecturers 5y

I have a problem. I'm an Urban Fantasy Girl and I don't like the Fae 🙈 For years, every plot summary I read that stated the Fae were involved, I'd put the book down. Seanan Mcguire is my idol but I've avoided October Daye. When I got round to reading Rosemary and Rue, I thought it was just OK. This one on the other hand, I actually got invested! I'm now onto book 3. I think it might actually help me with my issues with Fae!

Re-read to get back into this world. I think this book has a bit of a flabby middle, in retrospect; it's my wife's least favourite and I can agree with that. Still fun, though: I enjoy the concept of a Dryad living in a server particularly much.

First book finished in 2019 (even if started in 2018)!

Good world building, though a bit of a frustrating mystery. I solved part but not all of it. I do like the Toby Daye characters and will be reading more.
3.5-4⭐

The second book the the October Daye series. Just as good, if not more engaging than the first book. I accidentally stayed up until 3am to read "just one more chapter" (i.e. 10-15 not chapters). Looking forward to sharing the next book in the series.

When you read as many books as I do, sometimes it's hard to feel genuine excitement about a series. Not so with October Daye! These books are 🔥🔥🔥

In this second installment, we follow Toby while she tries to solve a series of murders for her Liege. While some say this should have been an easy solvable case for Toby, I say that I think the Author did a fantastic job running us in circles; trying to figure out who the killer was. These books are such a pleasure to read, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next one!
