Longthroat Memoirs: Soups, Sex and Nigerian Taste Buds
Longthroat Memoirs: Soups, Sex and Nigerian Taste Buds | Yemisi Aribisala
10 posts | 4 read | 10 to read
One of the most enduring myths on the Nigerian Femme Fatale - mammy-water, 'winch' or husband-snatcher - has to do with the cooking of fish stew ... A woman can do what she likes with a man When She knows how to satisfy his appetite for food. "Long throat Memoirs presents a sumptuous menu of essays about Nigerian food, lovingly presented by the nation's top epicurean writer. As well as a mouth-watering appraisal of the cultural politics and erotics of Nigerian cuisine, it is therefore a series of love letters to the Nigerian palate. From innovations in soup, fish as aphrodisiac and the powerful seductions of the yam, Long Throat Memoirs examines the complexities, the peculiarities, the meticulousness, and the tactility of Nigerian food. Nigeria has a strong culture of oral storytelling, myth of creation, of imaginative traversing of worlds. Long Throat Memoirs collates some of Those stories into at irresistible soup-pot, overexpressed in the flawless love language of appetite and nourishment.A sensuous testament on why, When and how Nigerians eat the food they love to eat; this book is a welcome addition to the global dining table of ideas.

Pickpick

Setting context - I know little to nothing about Nigerian food.
The author didn't feel the need to dumb it down and explain everything to the audience that is not well versed in the food and culture. There was an essay about sex which was a bit odd and skippable.
Would I have appreciated it more if I have eaten Nigerian food? - Yes. But if I ever do I will dip back into it.

batsy Is that homemade pie? Looks yum! 2y
charl08 I want to read this one. I've always meant to try cooking breadfruit and also jollof rice. 2y

Smarkies @batsy unfortunately not. I was at a cafe in Subang reading this book. 😁 it was yum though. 2y
Smarkies @charl08 I wish I could find a good African restaurant where I am so that I can try the food she is talking of. 2y
charl08 @Smarkies your post inspired me to look online - found some recipes, so will have a go. I found Nigerian (or rather, the food on the small section of Nigeria I visited, such an enormous, varied place) had too much chilli for me - so hoping that I could make a milder version. 2y

Bailedbailed

I‘m out after reading this. It‘s not a competition and I was struggling with this anyway. There was some beautiful language but I wasn‘t connected to it anyway.
I would love in the future to read a different book on Nigerian food but this one gets a hard pass from me. Maybe she was trying to be funny but I don‘t think so. #bailed

akckitty Wow..... People with that attitude/mindset. No 🤬 thanks. 6y
Weaponxgirl @akckitty right?! I literally sat there saw that and just went f*ck this. 6y
Jas16 I would have bailed too. 6y

Weaponxgirl I‘m gonna read this for my #readingwomen challenge instead for the Nigerian author prompt instead. 6y
Weaponxgirl @Jas16 thanks, I don‘t normally rage bail but for these sort of sentiments I will. 6y
Weaponxgirl So a quick google search tells me it‘s illegal to be homosexual in Nigeria and you can be put in prison for up to 14 years and in some places people are killed for it. The sentiment is even worse to me knowing that. (edited) 6y
GingerAntics Straight men treat anyone they see as inferior like total shit. The answer is not for each group they see as inferior to only deal with themselves. We all need to come together. 6y
CarolynM You are so right - it's not a competition. I find myself having to say that to people a lot about a lot of things. 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics it was strange as she seemed to go out of her way to include that in the book about food. And yes, we need to come together we can‘t start quantifying who‘s oppression is worse. 6y
Weaponxgirl @CarolynM i couldn‘t even finish that chapter with that attitude. 6y
Bertha_Mason Good for you. Life is too short to finish bad books. 6y

Some of the writing in this so far is beautiful. I‘m finding that this author is going more for feel and emotions than actually trying to teach you anything about the food in a practical sense. Some of the ingredients mentioned I‘ve never heard about before and she doesn‘t explain them at all! I‘m not sure exactly how I feel about it yet but so far it‘s mostly positive

Bailedbailed

Fun and energetic but too detailed and loooong for me, especially not knowing anything about Nigerian food or most of the vegetables, spices, or other ingredients she rhapsodizes about. Might go back to it later but for now—for the 'food memoir' reading task—I have found a 3-hour audiobook that'll do the trick much better.

I can't wait to read this! It'll slot in nicely to the reading challenge category about food memoirs – can't remember which of the various reading challenges has that category but one of them does. (I wasn't happy about the literary prize sticker on the front cover, which will not peel off without using an iron and a damp tea towel later on.)

Cinfhen Sounds fascinating and #LitsyReadingChallenge has that box and maybe #Popsugar too💜 8y
Lindy I enjoy food writing almost as much as I enjoy eating. Look forward to your comments on this. 8y
saresmoore I'd be happy to share a copy of my Google docs spreadsheet for reading challenges. 🤓 This book is very intriguing! 8y

I'm totally going to try this one for the Litsy food/drink nonfiction category!
