Setting context - I know little to nothing about Nigerian food.
The author didn't feel the need to dumb it down and explain everything to the audience that is not well versed in the food and culture. There was an essay about sex which was a bit odd and skippable.
Would I have appreciated it more if I have eaten Nigerian food? - Yes. But if I ever do I will dip back into it.

charl08 @Smarkies your post inspired me to look online - found some recipes, so will have a go. I found Nigerian (or rather, the food on the small section of Nigeria I visited, such an enormous, varied place) had too much chilli for me - so hoping that I could make a milder version. 1y

I‘m out after reading this. It‘s not a competition and I was struggling with this anyway. There was some beautiful language but I wasn‘t connected to it anyway.
I would love in the future to read a different book on Nigerian food but this one gets a hard pass from me. Maybe she was trying to be funny but I don‘t think so. #bailed

Weaponxgirl So a quick google search tells me it‘s illegal to be homosexual in Nigeria and you can be put in prison for up to 14 years and in some places people are killed for it. The sentiment is even worse to me knowing that. (edited) 5y

GingerAntics Straight men treat anyone they see as inferior like total shit. The answer is not for each group they see as inferior to only deal with themselves. We all need to come together. 5y

Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics it was strange as she seemed to go out of her way to include that in the book about food. And yes, we need to come together we can‘t start quantifying who‘s oppression is worse. 5y

Some of the writing in this so far is beautiful. I‘m finding that this author is going more for feel and emotions than actually trying to teach you anything about the food in a practical sense. Some of the ingredients mentioned I‘ve never heard about before and she doesn‘t explain them at all! I‘m not sure exactly how I feel about it yet but so far it‘s mostly positive

Fun and energetic but too detailed and loooong for me, especially not knowing anything about Nigerian food or most of the vegetables, spices, or other ingredients she rhapsodizes about. Might go back to it later but for now—for the 'food memoir' reading task—I have found a 3-hour audiobook that'll do the trick much better.

I can't wait to read this! It'll slot in nicely to the reading challenge category about food memoirs – can't remember which of the various reading challenges has that category but one of them does. (I wasn't happy about the literary prize sticker on the front cover, which will not peel off without using an iron and a damp tea towel later on.)
