Talk is a hilariously irreverent and racy testament to dialogue: the gossip, questioning, analysis, arguments, and revelations that make up our closest friendships. Its the summer of 1965 and Emily, Vincent, and Marsha are at the beach. All three are ambitious and artistic; all are hovering around thirty; and all are deeply and mercilessly invested in analyzing themselves and everyone around them. The friends discuss sex, shrinks, psychedelics, sculpture, and S and M in an ongoing dialogue where anything goes and no topic is off limits. Talk is the result of these conversations, recorded by Linda Rosenkrantz and transformed into a novel whose form and content put it well ahead of its time. Controversial upon its first publication in 1968, Talk remains fresh, lascivious, and laugh-out-loud funny nearly fifty years later.

So. I really want to like this novel - quite progressive for an experimental novel published in the late 60s based on author‘s audio-recorded conversations with friends while spending the summer in a beach in East Hampton. However, I find the pure dialogue to be challenging, especially since very little context is provided about the main characters‘ lives - it‘s been languishing while I read more compelling stories, but have not given up yet.

I am surprised to find that this book is 1. Strictly dialogue and 2. Taken from the author's actual recordings of her friends during a summer holiday in the Hamptons in 1965.

Hoping the format grows on me a little bit...

Reviewsbylola Sounds kind of crazy to me and yet I‘m reading a true crime book currently that is literally just the transcription of a pod cast series and I‘m really liking it so 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ 7y
emilyhaldi @Mdargusch @Reviewsbylola @IamIamIam once I got in the rhythm it actually got pretty good. Some of the stories were hilarious and like watching an episode of Girls. But by the end it was getting pretty repetitive 😏 7y

inthegreensandblues I saw the movie Little Children a long time ago and didn't know it was adapted from a book. 🤦 Certain scenes really stuck with me, I will have to add this book to my list. 7y
