The Purple Diaries
The Purple Diaries: Mary Astor and the Most Sensational Hollywood Scandal of the 1930s | Joseph Egan
5 posts | 6 read | 12 to read
One of Hollywoods first scandals was nearly its last. 1936 looked like it would be a great year for the movie industry. With the economy picking up after the Great Depression, Americans everywhere were sitting in the dark watching the starsand few stars shined as brightly as one of Americas most enduring screen favorites, Mary Astor. But Astors story wasnt a happy one. She was born poor, and at the first sign that she could earn money, her parents grabbed the reins and the checks. Widowed at twenty-four, Mary Astor was looking for stability when she met and wed Dr. Franklyn Thorpe. But the marriage was rocky from the start; both were unfaithful, but they did not divorce until after Mary Astor gave birth to little Marylyn Thorpe. What followed was a custody battle that pushed The Spanish Civil War and Hitlers 1936 Olympic Games off of the front pages all over America. Astor and Thorpe were both ruthless in their fight to gain custody of their daughter, but Thorpe held a trump card: the diaries that Mary Astor had been keeping for years. In these diaries, Astor detailed her own affairs as well as the myriad dalliances of some of Hollywoods biggest names. The studio heads, longtime controllers of public perception, were desperate to keep such juicy details from leaking. With the complete support of the Astor family, including unlimited access to the photographs and memorabilia of Mary Astors estate, The Purples Diaries is a look at Hollywoods Golden Age as it has never been seen before, as Egan spins a wildly absorbing yarn about a scandal that threatened to bring down the dream factory known as Hollywood.

Had some downtime at work this weekend for reading. This was a #CupidGoesPostal gift from @Reviewsbylola I really enjoyed this one. Mary Astor was pretty impressive in keeping her cool on the witness stand. Reading about the 1930's is very interesting to me. I don't have any scandalous content to put in my diary in the pic. 😉#LitsyAtoZ @BookishMarginalia

Reviewsbylola I'm glad you enjoyed this! It was a fascinating story that I had never heard of before. Very salacious! 7y

This book has several examples of some of my #bookishpetpeeves--typos, using the wrong word, and just plain mistakes! ?

"Barbed" (rather than bobbed) her hair
"Wrecked" havoc
"Lied" on her bed

And worst of all, the family in Meet Me in St. Louis is named Smith, not March! (Though Mary Astor did play Marmee in Little Women.)

#marchintoreading (The month, not the family! ?) @RealLifeReading

JenlovesJT47 Lol I am about to read this, got it from the library. Gonna read her autobiography first, have you read it? 7y
JenlovesJT47 @rubyslippersreads yes I broke down and bought that from Amazon, I loved it! The illustrations were great! 7y
Sace Drat! I just bought this as part of my birthday haul. Those are my pet peeves, too. I wish I'd opted for the graphic novel instead. 7y

#nonfictionnovember One of the most readable non fiction books I have read in awhile, this was a real treat. It tells the story of the custody case between Franklyn Thorpe and film star Mary Astor. The case became tabloid fodder as the case became more and more contentious and as Dr. Thorpe attempted to have Ms. Astor's private diaries admitted into evidence. And the best part was all the pictures sprinkled throughout the book.

Demanda Awesome picture! 7y

Reviewsbylola Absolutely. I can't claim to know what you're going through but I have had multiple pregnancy losses and I know the pain of wanting a baby more than anything and it not working out. I pray you will get your miracle baby. ❤️❤️ @Jenshootsweddings 7y
Wife @SaturnDoo Hey! I was just weeding out a few books and checked to see who may have stacked this. If you don‘t have it and are still interested, I could mail it to you. I liked it, but won‘t read it again. 🌹 6y
