Violent Borders
Violent Borders: Refugees and the Right to Move | Reece Jones
13 posts | 5 read | 15 to read
A major new exploration of the refugee crisis, focusing on how borders are formed and policed Forty thousand people died trying to cross international borders in the past decade, with the high-profile deaths along the shores of Europe only accounting for half of the grisly total. Reece Jones argues that these deaths are not exceptional, but rather the result of state attempts to contain populations and control access to resources and opportunities. We may live in an era of globalization, he writes, but much of the world is increasingly focused on limiting the free movement of people. In Violent Borders, Jones crosses the migrant trails of the world, documenting the billions of dollars spent on border security projects and their dire consequences for countless millions. While the poor are restricted by the lottery of birth to slum dwellings in the aftershocks of decolonization, the wealthy travel without constraint, exploiting pools of cheap labor and lax environmental regulations. With the growth of borders and resource enclosures, the deaths of migrants in search of a better life are intimately connected to climate change, environmental degradation, and the growth of global wealth inequality. From the Hardcover edition.

There is a lot here! About how national borders are harmful. It really goes deep into the history of nations vs states, the history of borders. Maybe too much? Regardless it gave me three full meals of food for thought, that's for sure.

Deeply compelling and timely read that will make you have to think deeply about the privilege of movement and how borders came to be/what functions they serve. Some say “open borders” woah that‘s radical...but as humanitarian crises pile up, future generations may wonder how we waited so long.

SW-T @andytbarnes One definitely wonders what future generations will think of us 🤔 5y

The closest thing I have to #gardening, since I live in an apartment, is going to the park and appreciating the skills of others. I stopped by this one after picking up my library holds today. #marchmadness

An engaging read examining borders from perspectives I had not considered. I'm not sure there is enough of a ramification study here but I will be deep in thought about it for some time. It's a great start to my #borders2017 reading project! As much as Trump gets the border attention, it is definitely not just him with the increased bordering.

I have been reading this no more than a chapter at a time, and last night read the chapter about the US-Mexico border. This book is good current examination of borders.

Every individual has the right to move. We should not have to be tied to our place of birth, especially, if that place is no longer looking after its people. Collectively, we have to stop building borders and walls restricting those looking for a better life. And, we need to continue to denounce the anti-immigration rhetoric of our mis-guided leaders. We are in this together and we need to take care of each other.

JenniferEgnor I couldn‘t have said this better!💯 3y
