Mermaids of Lake Michigan
Mermaids of Lake Michigan | Suzanne Kamata
7 posts | 2 read | 16 to read
Elise Faulkner is more at home in the waters of her beloved Lake Michigan than on land where her beauty queen mom is always on her back about her lack of a social life; her sister is dating the boy of her dreams; her favorite penpal--the one who wrote about mermaids in Ghana--has gotten married and ended their correspondence; and no one's allowed to talk about her glamorous great-grandmother, the deep-sea wreck diver. Elise is biding her time with books until she can flee. But then crazy Chiara Hanover pops into her life, as does Miguel, a mysterious carnival worker whose dark future has been predicted by a gypsy.

Short, beautifully written coming-of-age story set in 1970s Grand Rapids, MI. Although I turned seventeen a decade later & across the country from Elise, I could relate to her thoughts & feelings & the highs & lows of becoming an adult. There's some magical realism worked in-but it doesn't take away from the real moments. Review, recipe (Scrambled Egg Sandwich w/ Sriracha-Garlic Mayo) inspired by the book + GIVEAWAY for a copy on my blog-link👇🏼

LeahBergen Where is your avocado toast?! 😀 7y
DebinHawaii @LeahBergen Hah! It didn't fit the book and the store had no good avocados yesterday, but I will definitely be buying some & making it with the sauce! 😆👍 (edited) 7y

HippieChickHomeschool Must be nice to live in Hawaii- avocados and tomatoes in February! 😊 7y
quirkyreader Deb it's kind of weird thinking of mermaids in GR. Because Lake Michigan gets super cold and does weird ice things in the winter. 7y
BethFishReads I like the sound of this 7y
DebinHawaii @HippieChickHomeschool That is a bonus for sure! 😆👍 @quirkyreader I bet! Maybe they winter in Florida?! Kidding-there's really not a bunch of them swimming about or anything, I promise! 😂👍 @BethFishReads I enjoyed it--a quick, good read--plus you grew up there so stop by & enter! I'm linking to Weekend Cooking this weekend of course! 😀👍 7y
BethFishReads I will be entering this one!!!! 7y
Cinfhen Definitely will be making this sandwich, my boys will love it😍good review 7y

Lake Michigan from the Northwestern campus, more or less. You'd be able to see the Chicago skyline if a) it weren't so hazy and b) I hadn't been so lazy and moved to a spot where the trees weren't blocking it. But look, sun!! ☀️#riotgrams #outside

I did eventually make it out of bed on this lazy stormy Saturday-granted it was only as far as the couch but I brushed my hair and put on yoga pants so there's that! 😆 Lunch on the tray is leftover chickpea salad with celery, mustard & dill, water crackers & Ginger Ale because I wanted bubbles. Tucking into this book for a bit because I am reviewing it for a book tour next week. I love the colors and design of the cover. 📚🍽#litsypartyofone

saresmoore Yum! 7y
LauraBeth I pulled on yoga pants but then skipped brushing my hair and put on a baseball cap - so you win 😀 7y
BethFishReads Can't wait to see your review. I grew up on the Lakes 7y

Suzze @BethFishReads Do you go to the Toledo or Maumee Barnes & Noble? Two of my old managers manage those stores. 7y
DebinHawaii @LauraBeth I even used tinted lip balm! 😂👍 7y
DebinHawaii @BethFishReads @Suzze The book is set in Grand Rapids. 7y
BethFishReads @Suzze @DebinHawaii that's more or less where I went to summer camp! 7y
LauraBeth Well now you're just rubbing it in 😂 @DebinHawaii 7y
BethFishReads @DebinHawaii Toledo but my dad's practice was in Maumee 7y
Suzze @ohyeahthatgirl told me today that she lives in Grand Rapids.. 7y

Panpan

I enjoyed the writing style and flow enough to keep reading and finish the book, but the Romani representation is so full of outdated stereotypes and offensive clichés, it overshadowed everything for me. I kept hoping it would turn around somehow, but the harmful rep persisted to the end. Really disappointed in this one.

lynneamch Good to know. Thank you. 7y

This book was making me squirm as non-white/het characters appeared, but I ignored my gut and thought I might be too sensitive. Now I'm halfway through, and there's a Romani character who *embraces* really problematic rep? 😳 I hope this turns around, because the flow and style are otherwise really nice.

A few things that bring me joy: Max hanging out on the chair next to me with his paw on my knee, #bookmail-especially book-mail with a gorgeous cover and that sounds like a great book. (I'm reviewing it for a book tour in Feb so I'll have to let you know!), and a rainy, cool evening with a book on my e-reader (Emma-retelling by Alexander McCall Smith), Litsy, and a big cup of tea (not pictured). ❤️📚What brings you #joy?
