The Ghost of the Mary Celeste
The Ghost of the Mary Celeste | Valerie Martin
A mystery unsolved to this day A mystic who confounds the cynics A writer looking for the story that will make his name A ghost ship appears in the mist. To the struggling author Arthur Conan Doyle, it is an inspiration. To Violet Petra, the gifted American psychic, it is a cruel reminder. To the death-obsessed Victorian public, it is a fascinating distraction. And to one family, tied to the sea for generations, it is a tragedy. In salons and on rough seas, at sances and in the imagination of a genius, these stories converge in unexpected ways as the mystery of the ghost ship deepens. But will the sea yield its secrets, and to whom?

What happened to all the people on board the Mary Celeste?! They just disappeared, but perhaps a ghost or two remained!

Took my ebook settlement from B&N and went in store and got three books and the Funko. The Funko was 50% off and the books were a dollar each from the sale annex. Does anyone else‘s Barnes and Noble have a sale annex?

Mehso-so

Eh, this was okay I guess. Well written certainly.

Not so much about the true unsolved mystery of the Mary Celeste (found abandoned in good shape, full of supplies, captain and crew never seen again) and more about a friendship between a psychic medium and a sceptic journalist during the height of the Spiritualist movement in the late 1800s.

Arthur Conan Doyle has a major part and is presented as a pompous racist. Which was probably spot on.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Doctor Who posited that the real reason the Mary Celeste was abandoned was because of Daleks. Works for me. 7y
rabbitprincess @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Which episode was that? 😄 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @rabbitprincess One of the episodes (don't remember which) in the First Doctor serial The Chase. 7y

rabbitprincess @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Thanks! Have to track that one down in some form, if it is track-down-able. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @rabbitprincess It is! I've been watching through the classic Doctors by getting the discs through Netflix (made it to the 4th Doctor and Leela so far). Found out yesterday there is a streaming service called Britbox where you can stream them too! 7y
Laura317 @TobeyTheScavengerMonk @rabbitprincess I wonder if these can be streamed on Netflix? *drops everything and fights the kids for remote to check. 7y
diovival @Laura317 last time I checked they only had a few episodes per season of the classic Doctors 7y
Leniverse Didn't the 10th doctor come across an abandoned space ship Mary Celeste too? 🤔 Anyway, I think most strange things in the universe can safely be blamed on either Daleks or Cybermen. 😆 7y
Laura317 @diovival awww. I was hoping for more. @Leniverse I remember the story, just not the ship's name. I bet you're right! I'll try and check. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Leniverse @Laura317 If you're thinking of the one with the clockwork men that ship was the Madame de Pompadour 7y
Leniverse @TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Laura317 Ah, my bad. That was of course named Madame de Pompadour, which was a clue to the entire mystery. But it seems Mary Celeste is a recurring topic in Doctor Who: http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Mary_Celeste 7y

This was a gift from my brother from our All Hallows' Read book exchange last year. While I am intrigued by the strange but true story of the Mary Celeste I've been putting it off because Nautical Historical Fiction is much more my brother's thing than mine.

So far the prose is lovely, and I think Arthur Conan Doyle is a character, so that should be neat.

It's a little hard to see, but there is a ship with a #sail on the cover of this book. #lyricalapril

TobeyTheScavengerMonk How is this? My brother gave it to me as a give and I plan on reading it soon. 7y
SharonGoforth @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'm afraid I don't know, as I just bought it last weekend. The author is a former Orange Prize winner, so I'm hoping it's good. 7y
Cinfhen Yup, definitely a sail and this book sounds wonderful ⚓️curious to see your review....hopefully one day soon! You too @TobeyTheScavengerMonk 7y
