Little Face is a wonderful work, a brilliant use of mirrors and the writer's magic. Chilling, tantalizing, and ultimately fair and deeply satisfying.Barbara DAmato, author of Death of a Thousand Cuts Hannah adapts to crime fiction with arresting aplomb: Her characters are vivid, the novels challenging double narrative is handled with flair, and its denouement is ingenious. The Sunday Times (London) Outstandingly chilling. The Spectator Superb . . . good, old-fashioned spine-tingling stuff, but also a fine modern thriller. The Times (London) A terrifying mystery of manipulation, counter-manipulation and, finally, astounding revelation. Its a haunting story told with bewitching skill. The Scotsman Impressive. The Mail on Sunday The first time she goes out after their daughter is born, Alice leaves the two-week-old infant at home with her husband, David. When she returns two hours later, she insists that the baby in the crib is not her child. Despite her apparent distress, David is adamant that she is wrong. The police are called to the scene. Detective Constable Simon Waterhouse is sympathetic, but he doubts Alices story. His superior, Sergeant Charlie Zailer, thinks Alice must be suffering from some sort of delusion brought on by postpartum depression. With an increasingly hostile and menacing David swearing she must either be mad or lying, how can Alice make the police believe her before its too late? Sophie Hannah is an award-winning and best-selling poet in the United Kingdom. She has also previously published fiction. This is her first psychological crime novel. She lives in West Yorkshire with her husband and two children. From the Hardcover edition.

Busy week what with holidays and all, so not a crazy amount of reading done for this week's #bookreport -
Finished Little Face, 10 Blind Dates, and The Martian. Started Diary of an Ugly Duckling and bailed within ten pages because it just wasn't for me. Picked up The Starless Sea on Christmas Eve, but it's just too much to try and read when everything else is crazy, as it's kind of involved, so that one is on hold. On track to finish Winter ⬇

TheAromaofBooks Holiday (not pictured) by the end of today. Really enjoyed both 10 Blind Dates and The Martian, but Little Face wasn't my style. Winter Holiday is perfect, as anticipated. @Cinfhen 5y

#TBRRead #WinterGames #MerryReaders

This wasn't a bad book, it just wasn't for me. There is a lot of casual swearing (which many people are fine with, again, just not for me). Also I am always bothered when a female character behaves in a way that would be deemed unacceptable if a male was doing it.⬇️

TheAromaofBooks In this book, Simon's superior officer comes on to him all the time, at one point even asking him if he is a virgin - while they are somewhere for work. I can't imagine readers being okay with this scenario if the genders were reversed, and it made me uncomfortable throughout. ⬇️ 5y
TheAromaofBooks I never warmed up to Simon or to Charlie (the female detective), and since they are the consistent characters for the rest of the series, I probably won't continue it. I had another big ????? in the spoilers below. Also, if you are sensitive to verbal and emotional spousal abuse, this book is not for you. I was not expecting that aspect of the story, and it was pretty dark.⬇️ 5y
TheAromaofBooks The thing that really got me was the way that Alice and David have been married, fairly happily, for a few years, yet SUDDENLY he turns into this sadistic bastard who torments and belittles her, steals her clothes, makes her eat out of a dish on the floor like a dog, etc etc - like... I don't feel like this happens overnight?! I was so confused about how she had no warnings of this kind of behavior, and it left me off balance. ⬇ 5y

TheAromaofBooks Then, in the end, apparently that is all just forgotten?? There is no scene where she's like, “I had to get away from my mother-in-law AND my creepy husband??“ Her only goal appears to have been escaping the confines of her MIL's home. All the scenes with her husband abusing her just seemed out of place to the rest of the story, which frustrated me. 5y

This is one possible direction for my #weeklyforecast although it kind of depends on how I like the tagged book. I have the next few books in this series out from the library, so if Little Faces is good, I will be reading those next. If not - on to this stack!

@Cinfhen

Moonprismpower The Martian is so good!!!! 5y
Cinfhen Ohhhhhh, you have 5y
ljuliel I‘ve never read a book by Sophie Hannah. What type of books does she write, or what author would you say she reminds you of ? 5y

Sace I just got Starless Sea in my mail this week. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Moonprismpower - I'm not completely sure it's going to be my style, but I've heard good things!! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen @Sace - I got this copy from the library, and since it's a new book I have to have it finished by the first week of January. I'm a little scared, since I've heard mixed reviews!! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @ljuliel - she writes mysteries. This is the first of her books that I've read, although apparently she's written quite a few. It's not been a bad book so far, but I'm not a huge fan of the frequent f-bombs. I know it's the “way people talk“ but it isn't the way I talk, so I don't necessarily enjoy being bombarded by swearing the whole time I'm reading. We'll see how it turns out, but at this point I don't see myself reading the whole series. 5y
Sace @TheAromaofBooks I loved The Night Circus so much and I'm afraid of The Starless Sea not living up to my expectations. I probably should have gone the library route but I didn't want the pressure of a time limit. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Sace - I almost bought it but in the end decided I can read quickly enough to go the library route. And honestly, if I read the first few chapters and it's just as magical as The Night Circus, I'll buy it then! 5y
Cinfhen I‘ve seen lots of love from readers on Litsy so I‘ll take that as a good sign 🤞🏽 5y
Sace @TheAromaofBooks I read slowly on a good day and for some reason a time table makes me even slower! 5y
ljuliel Thanks for the warning. I think I‘ll pass. I don‘t like books with a lot of that sort of talk either. 5y
Megabooks I loved The Martian! It really made me appreciate potatoes. And good research! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @ljuliel - To me the other thing is that unless this book has a stellar ending, it's going to end up a solid, decent 3.5* read. At that level, there are a lot of equally engaging mysteries I can read that don't have as much swearing. Although in fairness, it seems to have tapered off now that I'm in the middle of the book. Maybe she was going for a gritty start. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Megabooks - I really think “This book made me appreciate potatoes“ would be the perfect blurb to put on the cover. 😁 As someone who already loves potatoes, I'm even more intrigued!! 5y

A friend has been raving about Sophie Hannah for years so I finally got around to trying one. It started out a little slow, but before long I was so tense I couldn't stand it. A mother insists her child has been kidnapped and replaced with another. No one believes her. It is really dark and twisty. I didn't have this figured out at all. I can't wait to read more of this series.

This book was good, not amazing, but good. It was slightly confusing but was written with good intent with a well thought out story to be told. Even though it was 'So-So' I am going to continue reading the series.

LiteraryinPA I didn't realize this was part of a series! I'll have to look into that. My favorite Sophie Hannah books are her recentish new Hercule Poirot mysteries. 7y
ToriE18 @LiteraryinLititz yeah, I think the series will be quite interesting as it follows the detectives and each book features a different case! 7y

Weird. The end of the book felt very unfinished. There were some major elements that were left totally hanging, in my opinion. At times I felt like I liked the book, but mostly I kept reading in anticipation of a satisfying conclusion that never came.

Mixed feelings about this one. Enjoyed reading it but left feeling unsatisfied. Tried to explain the plot to my husband and could barely make sense of the strange conclusion.

LiteraryinPA I 100% agree. I just finished it and your review sums up my feelings exactly. Weird book... 8y

Mixed feelings about this one, and it's hard to say too much without giving stuff away. Pros -it's well -written and the police characters are interesting and unlike the normal portraits of fictional detectives. Cons -pretty far-fetched both as to plot and to motive. But a cautious thumbs up.

Alfoster Agreed!😳 8y
AmandaM3 Well said! I couldn't get past how far fetched and unrealistic some of the relationships and decisions seemed. 8y

This one has received VERY mixed reviews on GR. So far I'm finding it very intriguing.

Reviewsbylola I really enjoyed this when I read it and went on to read more from this author. 8y
erzascarletbookgasm I didn't enjoy this as much as I hoped. :( 8y
Minervasbutler @Reviewsbylola That's good to hear especially as I splurged on a 3-book collection by her lol 8y

Lovely, little, psychological thriller in the same vain as Girl on a Train. Totally shocking plot twist that makes the reader think, could someone really do that? A detective series where the detectives are not the main characters but intricately involved enough to make it worth following along.
