Her Body is His Canvas A darkly possessive relationship has left Uma alone and on the run. Beneath her drab clothing, she hides a terrible secret-proof of her abuse, tattooed onto her skin in a lurid reminder of everything she's survived. Caught between a brutal past and an uncertain future, Uma's reluctant to bare herself to anyone, much less a rough ex-con whose rage drives him in ways she will never understand. But beneath his frightening exterior, Ivan is gentle. Warm. Compassionate. And just as determined to heal Uma's broken heart as he is to destroy the monster who left his mark scrawled across the delicate tapestry of her skin. Praise for Under Her Skin: "A dark and emotional tale that will make your spine tingle as well as your heart." -Sarina Bowen, USA Today bestselling author of Bittersweet "The perfect romance...a hint of danger, a whole lot of spice, and an HEA you believe in." -Anne Calhoun, award-winning author of Under the Surface Blank Canvas: Under Her Skin (Book 1) By Her Touch (Book 2) In His Hands (Book 3)

This was a pretty good book and by pure luck I started with the first in the series. The sex scenes were super steamy and while they were good, they did take over, putting a pretty decent storyline on the back burner. I liked the old lady Uma works for and she has a past I would love to read. I will probably read more in this series.

Uma runs away from an abusive relationship to a small Virginian town where a doctor has advertised free tattoo fixes for people who have been marked by abusive partners. She takes a job working for an old, grumpy, woman who just happens to live next door to blacksmith hunk, Ivan. The only part I really liked is what some people go through to show they care, how sensitive they can be towards someone who is damaged. Other than that it was alright.

It was intense enough that I read it in two days and bought the second one while only halfway through this one. It was not intense enough to make me cry, you're just not with the characters enough for that. But if you want a well written woman takes her life back from abuser story, it's a damn good one.

CoverToCoverGirl It‘s been on my TBR list for awhile 🙄, I just need to get to it! Great review. 6y
theresidentromantic @CoverToCoverGirl I discovered a review site the other night called romance rehab and I got a bunch of samples from Amazon based on what she said, the sequel was really highly recommend from them, but I thought I'd start with this one! 6y

I enjoyed the storyline and love between the characters.

An empowering and strength after trauma. Easily relatable to the real world and allows your fantasy to take part. Great story and it would be a great movie too.

Made it to chapter three and then glazed over a couple paragraphs of Six of Crows...focus has been BAD this week. The fact that I'm struggling even with podcasts at least tells me it's Scumbag Brain acting up and not laziness. I heated the same water for cocoa FIVE TIMES because I forgot it and it got cold.

rrrromance!
I am not typically a romance reader, but I accidentally fell in love with Kari Lynn Dell's Texas Rodeo, so I'm poking my nose around the genre.

lyradora I'm a big romance reader, so if you need recommendations, just ask. ? Also, if you get the chance, check Corrina Lawson ' s column, "The Great Rita Read" on bn.com. She's reading and discussing thirty years' worth of award-winning romance novels. #thegreatritaread #romance 7y
sloanghost @lyradora I'll definitely keep that in mind!! I'm especially looking for romance that a sf/f and thriller fan would like, any kind of lgbt+ couples (esp w/w), and ideally none of the "romantic abuse" that older romances tend to have. (Not as like Find Me Something Now ofc! Just like if something happens to pop up) 7y
lyradora @sloanghost Okay. 😊 1) SFR is out there in vast quantities but, like any other genre, some books are better than others. Anna Hackett writes fun, escapist sfr; her books are literary crack and I love them. Linnea Sinclair's sfr tends to be heavier, with more tech. Lindsey Buroker has a really good sfr series called Fallen Empire, which is equal parts Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica. Oh, look for Vivien Jackson, too. 7y
See All 6 Comments
lyradora 2) Thriller romances are *very* common, but it depends on how dark you want the story. You might look at Lisa Jackson, Catherine Coulter, Heather Graham (her newer books, not her stuff from the 80s), and Linda Howard. 3) In terms of lgbtq+, I heartily recommend KJ Charles, Jordan L. Hawk, Rhys Ford, TJ Klune, and Cat Sebastian. 7y
sloanghost @lyradora thank you so much! My tbr cries mercy lol 7y
lyradora @sloanghost Actually, when it comes to most romances, if you want to avoid the romantic abuse/rape as seduction trope (which I get because it makes me want to gag) I suggest sticking with books written in the last twenty years. The gender stereotypes and abuse in the books from the 70s and 80s can be very off-putting. *But* there are exceptions, so please check Corrina Lawson's column. 😊 7y

I know I was talking to someone about this series not too long ago. I don‘t remember who but if anyone‘s interested the whole set (so far—I think there should be more) is on kindle for just over $4. #romantsy

dylanisreading I think it was me hehe. I just read the first in the series and liked it. 7y
CocoReads Aha! I thought it was you! I had read them all from the library so I decided to go ahead and buy them for the kindle in case I get the urge for a reread. 😉 7y

I think some others mentioned in their reviews that the first half of this book is good but the second half not as much. I found the first three quarters to be pretty damn good, but then something I won't spoil threw me right out of the narrative, and I proceeded to trudge the rest of the way through the story. It's something I found problematic but other readers may not. I give the book 3 ✴✴✴ because I did really like the MCs. TW for abuse.

I'm loving this book. Loving Ivan and Uma.

This has been another edition of tea and good book and time to enjoy both. #romantsy

dylanisreading @CocoReads It's so good! I want to read more like it but maybe not all in a row. 7y
CocoReads I would space them out. If I remember right, they were all good but the second maybe not as good as the first. I think I liked the third one more though but the first one was my absolute fave 7y

Honestly not sure how to review this #LitsyAtoZ pick of mine. It's dark, it involves past abuse, but I enjoyed it and its hardfought HEA. Proceed with caution?

Trigger warning for abuse (past abuse is an integral plot point and fundamental to a character).

A story about a woman fleeing from her past and working to rebuild her life in a small town. A story about making connections with her ornery employer and the rough, sexy neighbor. A story about some steamy sex and how to build trust when someone's had that trust completely violated.

I found the first half to be stronger than the second, but overall it's really good! A bit intense (she's on the run from a particularly traumatic experience with an abusive ex) so if light, fluffy romance is what you're in the mood for, this isn't it. But if messier, more gritty romance (with plenty of steam) is your jam, this'll do it!

And as of this post the e-book is still FREE on Kindle and Nook (shoutout to @Jokila for the rec!) #romantsy

This was actually between a pick and a so-so for me. Not my usual type. Involved some intense subjugation of the protagonist (though thankfully not recounted countless times). The hero is the prerequisite gentle, understanding giant of a man who helps her heal emotionally and face her demons. Also some steamy encounters. 🔥 Not sure why I wasn't bowled over by it. Will try next one. #romantsy #osrbc

He kissed her--a slow, sweet press of lips, a luxurious stroke of tongues, punctuated by the scrape of his jaw, the movements between them so tiny, so intimate, their sighs a secret shared. Her breath expelled hard, emitting something noxious she hadn't even realized had been blocking her throat, and he took it in. #romantsy

Struggled with the rating on this. I liked the premise and was intrigued by the characters enough that I'll continue with the series but I felt that the timing of the romance between Ivan and Uma was too fast. I'd say 3.5 out of 5 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️ and also, yay I've finished 2 books today! #boutofbooks #readathon

This one is free as a kindle ebook today and tomorrow. Not sure if true on other platforms? Loved this start to a new series. It's a little dark, but also sweet. I enjoyed the 2nd book just as much.

mynamerhymes Thanks for the heads up. Who would you recommend it for? 8y
nitalibrarian @mynamerhymes Anybody that likes darker romances. Who is not triggered by violence against women (not by hero). It kind of has a small town romance feel to it, but with some darker themes. 8y
