Bronze Bow
Bronze Bow | Elizabeth George Speare

He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. from the Song of David (2 Samuel 22:35) The Bronze Bow, written by Elizabeth George Speare (author of The Witch of Blackbird Pond) won the Newbery Medal in 1962. This gripping, action-packed novel tells the story of eighteen-year-old Daniel bar Jamina fierce, hotheaded young man bent on revenging his fathers death by forcing the Romans from his land of Israel. Daniels palpable hatred for Romans wanes only when he starts to hear the gentle lessons of the traveling carpenter, Jesus of Nazareth. A fast-paced, suspenseful, vividly wrought tale of friendship, loyalty, the idea of home, community . . . and ultimately, as Jesus says to Daniel on page 224: Cant you see, Daniel, it is hate that is the enemy? Not men. Hate does not die with killing. It only springs up a hundredfold. The only thing stronger than hate is love. A powerful, relevant read in turbulent times.

3✨ I didn‘t get into this Newbery Award Winner as I hoped I would. About a young man who lost a lot trying to fight the Roman‘s who took it all from him. He has a lot of hate in his heart as he try‘s to follow the cause to a vow he made to serve the Lord. He meets Jesus and his disciples through his journey. Jesus provides him wisdom that he needs to think about. This is one of my #roll100

Here are my #roll100 books this month. How exciting. Since this is my first time I added 3 slots to my TBR so will need to roll another number myself for the last one. 😅 @PuddleJumper

I never knew this story existed. My heart is so full. Love is stronger than hate. It's a beautiful book. Speare illustrated the Lord's love and patience and forgiveness in such a way that leaves no doubt that He came to set us free. #NewberyEpicChallenge @amber_ldsmom Amber, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

amber_ldsmom @Butterfinger So glad you loved it! My children and I all loved this book. ❤️ 4y

Our 7th and 8th graders were reading this with one of the pastors. I choose to grab the audio copy and “read“ with them. I am glad I did. It is a great book. The discussion with middle schoolers and pastor was great.

“The moment the shop door was open, villagers appeared with work they had saved for Simon‘s return. They watched the strange young blacksmith with suspicion, waiting to see what he could do. Daniel took up the #challenge. He could not deny that it was a satisfaction to step every morning into Simon‘s tidy shop, stocked with bars of iron and hung with rows of tongs and chisels and hammers.” #QuotsyApr19

This is one of those few books that I have read several times. I think I have read it 5 times! I LOVE how the main character is a short tempered young man that is full of hatred and does not care for anyone, but Jesus(don‘t y‘all love those words) turned his life around for the better! It is a GREAT book!

Starting this today as my July Newbery title. I'm hoping to get enough reading time tomorrow so I can finish it in July. 🙂

For years, I've been collecting Newbery books from thrift stores (with the intention of reading them, naturally). This, among many, still remains unread on my shelf. #TBR #AprilBookShowers #PublishedInThe1960s

mrsamandahood Do you have Island of the Blue Dolphins? ❤️ that book! My oldest is reading it now and loving it. (edited) 8y
LeslieO What a fun collection! 8y
pocketmermaid I also used to do the same! But I purged my collection a few years ago. I made the decision to try to read all the Newbery winners fro my lifetime, rather than all of them. 😀 8y

One of my favorite books growing up. Always remember the exchange between Daniel and Jesus, which I unfortunately don't have verbatim, but I remember as Jesus saying: "An eye for an eye. We must repay in kind. How will you repay [spoiler's] death?" Daniel: "By vengeance!" Jesus: "But he did not give you vengeance. He gave you love. Can you repay in vengeance what was given to you in love?"

I had no idea what to expect when I picked up The Bronze Bow (the back of my copy had no blurb), but what I found inside the book was a feast! • Read my full review here: http://bit.ly/2b68FQ1
