Hard Magic: Book I of the Grimnoir Chronicles
Hard Magic: Book I of the Grimnoir Chronicles | Larry Correia
11 posts | 21 read | 8 to read
Jake Sullivan is a war hero, a private eye-and an ex-con. He's free because he has a magical talent, being able to alter the force of gravity in himself and objects in his vicinity, and the Bureau of Investigation calls on him when they need his help in apprehending criminals with their own magical talents. But the last operation he was sent along to help with went completely wrong, and Delilah Jones, the woman the G-men were after, who just happened to be an old friend of Jake's in happier times, had a lot of magical muscle with her, too much muscle for the cops to handle, even with Jake's help. It got worse. Jake found out that the Feds had lied to him about Delilah being a murderer as well as a bank robber, and they had lied about this being his last job for them-he was too valuable for them to let him go. And things were even worse than Jake imagined. There was a secret war being waged by opposing forces of magic-users, and Jake had no idea that he had just attracted the attention of one side, whose ruthless leaders were of the opinion that Jake was far too dangerous to be permitted to live... At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Neither one of these novellas are in the database (likely because only on Audible) so I tagged another of Correia‘s books (which I also liked).

Take one gritty, hardened cop + corrupt justice system + gangs & corporate overloads and then set it in space a lost colony on a super deadly planet where not everything is what it seems. What you get is a fun SciFi murder mystery! And Oliver Wyman has the perfect voice for a gritty, hardened detective.

julesG Sounds interesting. Lynn, you're not helping with #MountTBR. 😁 1y
wanderinglynn @julesG they‘re short! About 5 hrs (on 1x speed) for both. I listened to both on 1.4x speed and I finished both in about 3.5 hrs. #enabler 😆 1y

🎧 Loved this book!

1930‘s alternate history setting … airships … Japanese, German‘s much more prominent … Chicago location.

Jake Sullivan is a hardboiled private eye, x-war-hero, x-con. His new magic is the ability to change the weight of things with a thought, you could float to the sky or squish to the earth. He‘s currently working for J Edgar Hoover hunting down “actives”, individuals using their new found magic for bad.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 👇🏻

Twainy Faye (now a teen) was sold to a poor farmer for $10 by her parents that had no patience for her magic. The farmer, also able to travel in the blink of an eye, is killed & she vows vengeance.

Jake & Faye cross paths in this fast paced alternate history set in an urban fantasy world in Dresden style.

Great book! I like this trilogy MUCH better than Monster Hunter, etc.

Bronson Pinchot kicks the story up a notch with his narration!

#Two4Tuesday #TheSpineView

1 - Damaged protagonist, flashbacks, dialogue & plot heavy, dark, gritty, urban, crime novels, old gumshoe detective novels.

2 - Bosch but my favorite series lately has been Larry Correia‘s Grimnoir Chronicles!!

Thank you @EadieB 😁

TheSpineView Great! Thanks for playing! 3y

Last book finished of 2020! Number 240! And it finished my #Booked2020 challenge as the book on the #BottomOfMyTBR -it‘s been on my Audible shelf for forever, as one of the first books I used a credit for! I don‘t know why I waited so long! I loved it!! It‘s a fun & fresh alternate history fantasy with a varied cast of characters & an exciting plot! I loved listening & #AudioColoring & working on my 2021 planner! Excited to listen to the rest!

Cinfhen Wonderful 🎊Happy New Year and here‘s to a new year of beautiful drawings and fabulous books 💗 4y

🎧 What if WWII was fought with magic, massive dirigible airships ruled the skies & Japan threatened war with magic-fueled ninja super soldiers. Oh and zombies are a thing! Strong female/male MC‘s that I liked.

Over the top Super-hero-like action. I think I‘m going to like this series more than MH.

Think alternate history, urban fantasy, sci-fi. A bit Dresden Files-ish. A lot going on! Bronson Pinchot is an amazing narrator. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Twainy I just read some reviews here. I don‘t like to be influenced so I don‘t read them until I‘m done. I listen at 1.5x speed so Pinchot‘s slow exact reading style in contrast with the fast pacing didn‘t impact me at all. Fast fun fluff! 4y

Wow! What a crazy, magic-filled, part-noire, part-adventure, part-mystery, alternative history story. Larry Correia sure knows how to write a wild ride. And Bronson Pinochet is an incredible narrator.

Book 17 for #screamathon and #scarathlon #teamharkness

Book 7 for #outstandingOctober

Ruthiella I‘ve only listened to one book narrated by Bronson Pinchot (Strangers on a Train) but it was awesome! He is really good! 😀 (edited) 4y

Twainy I‘ve had this book since it came out. Libby/Hoopla have spoiled me with free books. 1st lull in a long time & I felt like a little Pinchot. Just a fast fun thrill ride. My attention has suffered during the pandemic but I made it through it and definitely enjoyed it! Agreed! 🖤 4y
wanderinglynn @Twainy glad you enjoyed it! 👍🏻👍🏻 4y

I usually love Bronson Pinchot‘s audiobook narration; but he is so slow, so careful in his reading that it completely enervates the action scenes in this alt-history where magic happens naturally. The main characters are more like super heroes with Sad Puppy biases; but this could have been more entertaining with a more lively delivery. #UnpopularOpinion 🎧

This book was so long. Interesting concept, but so slow. I just really struggled with this one.

I loved this book. It was in no way what I was expecting but it was great. It's a magical adventure book with some a little bit of philosophy just to mix it up. A great cast of characters and I can't wait to read the next one.
