Rest
Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less | Alex Soojung-Kim Pang
25 posts | 14 read | 13 to read
In our 24-7 global economy, rest feels like a luxury at best and a weakness at worst. We see work and rest as competitors - but what if they're actually partners in a productive, balanced life? Blending rigorous scientific research with examples of writers, painters and thinkers - from Darwin to Stephen King - Silicon Valley futurist and business consultant Alex Soojung-Kim Pang exposes how we've underestimated the power of rest for our success. Though it's as natural as breathing, it's also a skill we can all learn to boost our creativity and productivity. Full of tips for upping our downtime, from sleep to hobbies to vacation, Rest is a new roadmap for finding renewed energy and inspiration, and getting more done.

Too much detail...but some great big-picture ideas. Worth the quick read.

I'm late in posting my final #13in3 tally but I had fun! Thanks @Samplergal 😊

Just shy of 8.5 hrs, finished 3 books and made progress on 2 others.

Samplergal Excellent! I‘ll add you to the totals. 6y

The culture of overwork was one of the reasons (there were many) why I quit academia after my MA. After almost 5 years working in the corporate world, it's getting to me again. I need to keep reminding myself of this, cause it's way too easy to get caught up in the hype of overwork.

(This book has a terrible Litsy rating but I am really enjoying it so far 🤔)

There were some interesting facts in this book, but some of it I found obvious and other parts my mind just liked to wander because it was boring to listen to. There were definitely some parts that made me think, which is why it is a so-so 🙂

Trying to finish up this playaway while cutting rehearsal dinner invites apart ❤️ (Yes I know it‘s really early to be working on these for September, but then I can cross it off the list!)

When you are all set to drive 3 hours to look at flower girl dresses and mother of the bride dresses, you grab your playaway for the trip! I think I‘m not really an audiobook person...I found myself zoning out and thinking about other things instead of following the speaker...maybe I should have picked a story instead of non-fiction!

I might be taking the message of this book a little too seriously. (Photo by my partner, Lauren.)

Made myself a little crudité tray for my #Readathon dinner. Only one hand required! (My hummus couldn't fit in the picture.)

You know how sometimes you're at your desk at work and you have to fight off tears on a Wednesday afternoon? And you just started reading this the same week. Yeah.

What I liked: very well researched with lots of examples. What I didn't like: so, so, soooo many examples. Good solid read and I highly recommend if you are sick of our capitalist, Puritan, work harder and harder and harder till you die mindset. Maybe skim some examples.

I've long been alternately bewildered and intrigued by our workaholic culture, so this was mostly nothing new to me. I did like the well-rounded way Pang approached it. This isn't just about literal rest like sleep, but also hobbies, sabbaticals, vacations, and even exercise. Pang alternates between scientific studies and real life examples, though the figures he profiles tend towards the white and male. Full review:

"Rest is not something that the world gives us. It‘s never been a gift. It‘s never been something you do when you‘ve finished everything else. If you want rest, you have to take it. You have to resist the lure of busyness, make time for rest, take it seriously, and protect it from a world that is intent on stealing it.”

I wasn't planning to read this one during #24in48, and now it is the first book I have finished during my (very lazy) readathon.

I am pretty lame about stacking books actually. It just gets kind of overwhelming for me. You know ... so many books ... so little time and all that. So here's what I found in my stacks. Thanks for all the ideas Littens! 😘😘

MidnightBookGirl Can I ask what app you use to get the bookworm and tbr stickers? 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MidnightBookGirl Sure. It's in the latest version of the Litsy app. Just be sure you've downloaded the updates! 8y
Reviewsbylola I only stack books if I don't own them and really really want to read them. Otherwise it would be out of control. And I cull my list all the time. 8y

BookishMarginalia @Reviewsbylola I admire your restraint and your dedication! 8y
MidnightBookGirl Thanks! I guess it's not available for me yet, but I'm looking forward to it! Lol, I just thought a bunch of Littens were using other photo apps, but the update makes more sense. :) 8y
CocoReads @reviewsbylola thanks for reminding me I need to wean out the books I own from my list. I like to use it when I go to the bookstore but don't want to accidentally buy the same book twice. This happens more than I like to admit 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MidnightBookGirl I am one of the beta testers, so sometimes it's confusing what's in the beta and what's available for everyone. Soon it will be for you too!! 😘 8y
MidnightBookGirl Nice! I'm definitely looking forward to bookish stickers! 8y
Cinfhen Love your choices @BarbaraTheBibliophage 💜I'm stacking from your stacking 😁😂 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Reviewsbylola I'm going through my list now and removing books I own. I tend to cull the GR list by average rating - anything under a 3.5 gets dumped, especially if there are a lot of 1 or 2 star ratings. Harder to do that with Litsy's system, though. Thanks!! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen That's awesome! I hope we both enjoy them! 8y
