#bathandbooks

I decided each year I‘m going to buy myself a Christmas book (I‘ll likely stick with British Crime Library for the most part) and label the inside cover with the year so that I can see which book I read in which year. They‘ll likely all be murderous Christmas books. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

LeahBergen Perfect! And I want this one. 😂 9h

Ok @Cinfhen I did it. My #top10ofthedecade. I chose only books that were published in that time frame (was that even a rule? I wasn‘t sure, but it helped me narrow it down) and I did fiction. Maybe I‘ll get around to do nonfic as well. 😆

Lindy 👍If I was making one of these lists, I think I would also include 1d
BarbaraBB @Lindy Do make one 😀! 1d
BarbaraBB Ooh great choices. Excited to see Dark Matter and Rules of Civility among them - I have both on my shelves to read soon! 1d
See All 15 Comments
Lindy @BarbaraBB I don‘t know if I can even narrow down a top 10 for 2019, never mind a whole decade. But… maybe. 1d
BarbaraBB @Lindy It‘s tough indeed and I already regret mine (having forgotten some great reads too) but it has been fun as well! 1d
Cinfhen Nice, Steph!!!!! A few surprises for me but I heartily approve of this list!!! I also focused on books published during 2010-2019 which made it easier @Lindy I‘d love to see your list!!!! 1d
Kalalalatja Yes to Hunger Games! I remember, that the box set was the first purchase I made on Amazon, and it started a bad habit (until Danish book sites started selling English books and having better prices) 😄 1d
Lindy @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Do you know if it‘s possible to sort Goodreads by stars? I would be looking through more than 3,000 titles, but if that was narrowed to 5-star reads, my initial list would be more manageable. 23h
KarenUK @lindy You can! That‘s how I narrowed mine down too.... 😊👍 23h
KarenUK Love your list Steph.... 💕 23h
Cinfhen I don‘t know if I knew that @Lindy @KarenUK but NOW I do...I‘m gonna check it out to see what gems I forgot to list 😂😂 23h
BarbaraBB @Lindy Yes! I did that on LIbraryThing to recollect my five star reads! 22h
Lindy @BarbaraBB it‘s been more than three years since I had to migrate to Goodreads from Shelfari and still I miss all the sorting capabilities that were easily possible in Shelfari. 22h
Reviewsbylola That‘s how I narrowed mine down @Lindy Otherwise I couldn‘t have curated this list without going absolutely bonkers. 21h
BarbaraBB @Lindy I‘m not a fan of Goodreads either. LT works better for cataloging 19h

Pickpick

Ok, so I just finished this on #audio, on the recommendation of @Cinfhen @Megabooks and @britt_brooke

It was fantastic, as they said. But here‘s where I‘m perplexed. I noticed a movement to “free Ross,” including an online petition. The argument is that his sentence is unjust and the government is trying to make an example of him. That he‘s a “non violent” criminal that doesn‘t deserve to waste away in prison for the rest of his life. ⬇️

Reviewsbylola And I‘m just baffled. This is a dude that decided his political stance should dictate the right of people to do what they want—drugs, weapons, etc. As the judge said, everything he did was with the intention of stripping away the social fabric of this country and the world. He put out hits on people. Wtf kind of privileged bullshit is it for people to take up this dude‘s cause because he‘s a smart, educated white guy? Am I wrong to see it ⬇️ (edited) 4d
Reviewsbylola that way? Because literally all I see is glaring privilege and it‘s disgusting. Ross Ulbricht knew exactly what he was doing. He knew the consequences, should he be caught. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Why would anyone take up his cause? 4d
Megabooks I completely agree. It‘s people who are extreme libertarians, like Ross. Apparently they all just forget about that gulch experiment in South America. He took out hits on people. He had a conspiracy to distribute drugs on a scale beyond that of even Purdue pharma. He‘s the definition of an offender. Yeah... 4d
See All 9 Comments
Mdargusch I need to read this to be able to discuss. 4d
Cinfhen 💯 he should be locked up!! I think it‘s a very small group who favors his political views ( and maybe his looks) that want to see his sentence reduced. He created a mastermind black market that broke so MANY LAWS!!! He was selling body parts!!!!!! This dude is a criminal 4d
britt_brooke It‘s dilusional to me, but I‘m sure these whacked out extreme libertarians view him as their pseudo leader. He‘s a criminal on a massive scale. (edited) 4d
Reviewsbylola I‘m thinking this could count as my #politicalintrigue 🤔 What say you @Cinfhen 4d
Reviewsbylola It‘s just wild to me how many signatures he‘s gotten on his petition. I even had a “friend” on my FB share the petition. 🙄 @megabooks @cinfhen @britt_brooke Like seriously, find a worthier cause. (edited) 4d
Cinfhen Sure, it could work for political intrigue ❣️ 4d

Digital Audiobooks: New Media, Users, and Experiences | Iben Have, Birgitte Stougaard Pedersen
post image

My library recently began offering audiobooks thru rb digital. I‘m thrilled to have even more audiobook options—I‘m just confused as to why they now utilize three platforms. Libby/overdrive, hoopla, and now rb digital. Anyone able to answer that question? Librarians?

Penny_LiteraryHoarders Our library recently did away with Overdrive/Libby, Hoopla and Axis360 to go to only using Cloud Library. It is better than Axis360 but not sure about no more of the other platforms. There are more choices definitely though. (This doesn't answer your question though. Sorry!) 🙂 5d
TiredLibrarian @Reviewsbylola My system has all 3 of the ones you mentioned, and it's because the collections and borrowing terms are different. Ex: Hoopla has the biggest collection & no wait list but you can only get 3 items/mo.; Overdrive's collection has unlimited borrowing but wait lists & smaller collections. Libs subscribe to these services & it's a bit of a nightmare; it's expensive, complicated, and publishers & vendors often change their terms. 5d
jillrhudy Audiobooks exploded in popularity so we bought RBD with a shorter waitlist for bestsellers than on Overdrive. The catalog that Recorded Books offered was cheaper to subscribe to en masse than to buy audiobooks individually. 5d
See All 9 Comments
Reviewsbylola That makes a lot of sense! @jillrhudy 5d
Reviewsbylola We‘re actually able to borrow 12 titles per month on hoopla via my library, and I‘ve noticed the titles offered on it are usually different than Libby. And yes Libby/OD has the worst wait times. 😭 @TiredLibrarian 5d
Reviewsbylola Oh good, so there are even more platforms that could be added. 😅 @Penny_LiteraryHoarders 5d
sebrittainclark My library has RB digital, but I haven't had a ton finding audiobooks I'm interested in. I was told my library did it because it allows magazine rentals. 4d
Reviewsbylola That‘s interesting! My library uses a different (4th!) app for magazines. I haven‘t had much of a chance to browse rb digital yet but the true crime selection looks decent. @sebrittainclark 4d

I have a lot to do, but I just treated myself to a coffee so I‘m going to take the time to enjoy it with my current read.

I‘m so glad that #booked2019 gave me the push to reread this classic. It was assigned reading for my senior seminar course in college and I loved it then, but it‘s been awhile and I had forgotten how funny it is. Eagle & Crane | Suzanne Rindell
post image

I love Suzanne Rindell, a must read author for me, BUT this doesn‘t stack up to her first two books. I liked the setting, the story, and the inspiration. On the flip side, it felt like the action could have started sooner—the pacing was off. The characters didn‘t come alive for me. I used this one for #soldierstory for #booked2019 because WWII was an integral part of the book and one of the MC‘s brothers enlisted, which was the catalyst for ⬇️

I‘m glad my library is taking a stand against MacMillan publishing. I think it‘s greedy and disgusting that they‘re now limiting library access to their ebooks. #ebooksforall

Crazeedi Good for them, every library should do this 2w
julesG So they don't buy the ebook but still buy physical copies? Isn't that what the publisher wanted, more physical copies sold? 2w
Megabooks Good for them!! 2w
See All 12 Comments
Reviewsbylola Good point. But the publisher‘s stance is that the embargo will improve their sales because instead of being able to read the ebook from the library, readers will purchase the ebooks themselves. I think it would be a bit much personally to stop providing the books all together since, as far as I know, there‘s no limit on how many physical books libraries can purchase. @julesG 2w
julesG @Reviewsbylola See. It's a win for the publishers no matter what the library decides to do. And that's what annoys me the most about this embargo. 2w
Reviewsbylola I agree. Clearly they don‘t care and will continue to do what they want. That said, the embargo is only for the first 8 weeks of publication so it will hurt them when the libraries don‘t purchase additional copies after the 8 week mark. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. @julesG 2w
Bookzombie My library has also suspended the purchase of ebooks published by Macmillan. 1w
britt_brooke Nashville Public Library has done this, too, and I 100% support it! Screw MacMillan. And it‘s my understanding that even after the 8 week mark, ebook purchases will be limited. The whole thing is utter garbage and has the opposite effect on me. It makes me want to NEVER purchase a MacMillan book. 1w
britt_brooke @Bookzombie 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Mine, too. 1w
Bookzombie @britt_brooke I completely agree. San Antonio Public Library indicates they are suspending the purchase of titles until Macmillan reverses their decision or comes to the table about other options that would allow equitable access to ebooks. 1w

Pickpick

#trueblue took me down a path that wasn‘t intended by this prompt, but given the book I finished today, it immediately struck me as “having the blues.”

Jen Ashton is a celebrity whose life was rocked on Feb 11, 2017 when her ex husband took his own life. This book is the story of how she and her 2 teenage children dealt with and grew from their grief. So enlightening, albeit tragic. #movember

Cinfhen This sounds really heartbreaking but necessary. Very recently somebody from our community lost their husband to suicide. He suffered silently from bipolar disorder. It left the community shocked. Only 52, he appeared jovial, upbeat, was financially successful and articulate. Always with a smile and laugh/ so suicide seemed so out of character. 4w
marleed Oh my gosh, I will have to read this. I was in my 40s and my two kids were teenagers at the time of my husband‘s suicide. These years later I find that my efforts in the suicide discussion lean more toward those moving through the aftermath. 4w
ljuliel Very sorry to hear that @marleed ♥️ 4w
See All 12 Comments
Reviewsbylola I‘m so sorry. @marleed. Dr Ashton definitely appears to talk quite a bit about prevention (I think—I don‘t watch any of the shows she frequents), but in her case, she had a close relationship with her ex and there were no warning signs, so she definitely focuses mostly on the aftermath for suicide survivors and how to help, as well as what that journey looks like. In the book, she also shares stories of others who have been thru it too. ♥️ 4w
marleed @Reviewsbylola @ljuliel Oh thank you. I will definitely check it out. It‘s been a few years for me. I‘ve moved a couple times so as not to be the curator in the museum of my former life so it‘s all fine for me now. He was such a great guy and we are all the point where that is what we remember most. What most people didn‘t know was he had stage 4, terminal depression - and suicide is so often the result. 4w
Megabooks My longest friend, we‘ve been close since first grade and eat lunch every other week now, her husband committed suicide very rashly last year. It came after a fight about something he was hiding from her. She had no intention of divorcing him, but his own internal pressure popped. The last year has been horrible, tragic and difficult for her, her daughters, her mom, his family etc. She is honestly so fucking strong for her daughters. She amazes me (edited) 3w
Megabooks She is the epitome of grace under pressure, and I‘m glad I can listen to her vent whenever she needs it. Our moms are best friends, which is also cool! 3w
Mdargusch So tragic @marleed 😢 3w
marleed @Mdargusch Oh thank you. It never occurred to me to cover up the manner of his death. I wanted my kids and all our friends to grieve honestly. I think that made a difference. His mom was of the generation where suicide was a family secret. She did not come to his funeral or allow me to contact family until after the funeral. She grieved to friends and family a heart attack that never happened. She passed five years after her son. 3w
Reviewsbylola That‘s so heartbreaking. @marleed 3w
Reviewsbylola ♥️♥️♥️ @Megabooks 3w
marleed @Reviewsbylola I explain that we held him high on a 3-legged pedastool and when one leg was kicked out, he just could not maintain balance. These days I think of his depression as a terminal, stage 4 fight in which he ultimately lost the battle. ...For me, I thought our life was soo easy. I just did not recognize the severity of the situation until depression was deep in his bones. People actually got mad at my Pollyanna easy life. 3w

Anyone else surprised by this choice? Granted, I never read the first one, and I‘m not a devotee of Oprah‘s book club (or any celebrity book club, for that matter.) it just seems odd to me to choose a book that‘s a sequel.

Our morning of dance classes is over, so I‘m going to take some time with a fresh cup of coffee to finish Attenberg‘s latest. It‘s my favorite book of hers. I can‘t say enough of the deep character studies and raw, realistic portrayal of the good/bad binary.

And PSA. This maple latte creamer is amazing and I‘m obsessed with Aldi‘s maple vanilla whipped cream. I may or may not have had @HotdogZanzabaar buy 5 cans today. 😆

AlaMich That creamer sounds goood! And if you are a maple fan, maple Oreos don‘t suck either. 😋 4w

Hampton Sides is a fantastic story teller. He can take any historical account and render it in a way that you feel the compulsive need to turn each page. We read this for a family book club and it was enjoyed by all. The USS Jeannette was trapped in ice and its occupants were forced to trek across the ice in an attempt to live. Snow blindness and unbearable cold plagued the men for months. 🥶 #frozen #movember

Motivating Reluctant Readers | International Reading Association, Alfred J. Ciani
post image

I‘m wondering if any of you have tips for a reluctant reader. My gut tells me she just needs time. I think it‘s frustrating for her that she can‘t read, but she‘s never been a kid that loves books or begs me to read to her. We have hundred of books, including titles she likes or has chosen herself. My issue is she only will read her one story before bed. She was flagged for reading intervention and her reading specialist also wants her to do ⤵️

Reviewsbylola Lexia for a set time every week. Again, she‘s not interested. My issue is I don‘t want reading to feel like a chore or obligation to her. My one idea at this moment is to do a reading chart. Read for 20 minutes, get a sticker. Lexia for 20 minutes, get a sticker. With the idea of her earning a small toy once she gets enough stickers. Thoughts? Ideas that worked for your kids? 1mo
Redwritinghood My oldest was not a reader. I used to set a timer so that he didn‘t feel like there was an open-ended reading session (like I might intentionally ignore the time and make him read longer). I think also finding something he enjoyed was hard but helped. 1mo
Karisa My son was like this. He liked being read to though. So, kept reading to him and let him pick any book he wanted. He drifted to graphic novels that tied into tv shows he liked. We both realized that while fun these didn't make great readaloud books. He started reading them himself (we found other books to read together). Took a long time for him to branch out but now as a 5th grader he's on a Rick Riordan kick (and still loves read alouds)! 1mo
See All 26 Comments
Karisa Your kiddo is super cute by the way! Hope she finds her own reading path that works. 💗 1mo
ravenlee Parents magazine had an article a while back about non-traditional reading to encourage reluctant readers. The Read-Aloud Handbook had some good tips too. Have you tried audiobooks, in the car maybe? Our library has books that have text and audio together, like the book and tape sets from years ago. Interactive books like The Book with No Pictures, or mysteries like Cam Jansen that encourage the reader to look for clues? Good luck to you both. 1mo
Lindy @Reviewsbylola Small incentives like stickers might give her an extra push until she finds reading is itself a reward. If she loves having one-on-one time with you, that could be exploited for a regular reading session outside of bedtime. The Lexia program will provide data for the specialist but may not do much to make your child a reader, according to independent research. https://ies.ed.gov/ncee/wwc/Intervention/230 1mo
ravenlee Also, there‘s a school of thought (unschooling, or child-led education) in the homeschool world that kids will read when they‘re ready, as long as you make a variety of material available, model the behavior in an appealing way, and respond to her cues about readiness. Studies show that kids who learn to read later in this method catch up to their peers quickly with no lasting hindrances. 1mo
Lindy Also, what @Redwritinghood said about finding a book that‘s interesting is key. Hard, but worth it. Division 1 nonfiction might be a section to ask about in your local library. 1mo
wanderinglynn She is super cute. What about kid-friendly graphic novels or comic books? I‘ve also seen programs where reluctant kids or kids with reading problems read aloud to dogs. 1mo
CoffeeK8 @Lindy I agree, Lexia has some great qualities, but research is iffy. We use it at my school but only as a support not as the main program. How old is she? Some kids are just ready a little later. I recommend to parents to model reading behavior, read aloud to her, audiobooks, graphic novels, let her pick as much as possible 1mo
CoffeeK8 Oh also, putting on closed captioning on the TV is a sneaky way to get more reading in. 1mo
Reviewsbylola Every child at our elementary uses Lexia, but there‘s definitely more of a focus on it for the kids receiving intervention. I‘m happy to have her do it at home when and if she‘s interested, but I just don‘t feel comfortable forcing her. She‘s only in kindergarten. Luckily, her kindergarten teacher has a much different approach and really stays away from homework and assignments. She tells me just to forget the Lexia. 😆 @kindy @CoffeeK8 1mo
Reviewsbylola Also, @coffeek8, she‘s only 5. And I definitely think she‘s just not ready. She loves kindergarten but there‘s also been a big change to her confidence. She‘s very hard on herself. 1mo
Reviewsbylola Ha! She may be interested in reading to our dog or hamster. I‘ll have to give that a shot. @wanderinglynn 1mo
Reviewsbylola I think that‘s more along the lines of what I‘m thinking. @ravenlee I went to a talk the other night given by two women from the NYT that said we push reading on our kids much too early, and that in some European countries they don‘t even start reading basics until age 7. I think she‘s definitely showing me she‘s not ready, and that‘s totally fine, but I wonder if there‘s a way I can make reading aloud to her more appealing for her. 1mo
Reviewsbylola Thank you! @karisa I always let her choose what she wants to read and nothing is off limits. She‘s just not interested. I think for now I just need to be ok with the idea that bedtime reading is all the reading that she‘s going to do for now. 1mo
CoffeeK8 @Reviewsbylola not to say you shouldn‘t keep your eye on it, but it‘s developmentally ok to not be reading until you turn 6. FWIW my son didn‘t read until he was 6 and in the middle of first grade, and I wasn‘t concerned (I‘m a reading specialist) but all kids are different. 1mo
ravenlee I‘ve been very lucky - my kid was ready to read very early (she‘s 6 and was reading just before 4) and there‘s been no stopping her, but they‘re all different. Maybe try reading to her while she‘s doing something else? Coloring, building blocks, doing some simple exercise, something to occupy her body. Also, I read to my kid while she has bedtime snack, or other snacks during the day. And it‘s novels, so we have cliffhangers to drive us forward! 1mo
Blaire @Reviewsbylola that‘s really young for such a big push. My son is 7 (almost 8) and I would categorize him as a reluctant reader. His teacher has said she really isn‘t concerned until half way through second grade bc different kids are ready at different times. He has liked audiobooks and dogman series. We‘ll also switch off a page each or he‘ll read one character and I‘ll read the narration. 4w
Reviewsbylola That‘s what I‘m thinking. I tend to really beat myself up when she misses her 20 minutes per day but I‘m just going to take a deep breath and listen to her more. She‘s so young and I think just the fact that she has to many books at her disposal and that she constantly sees her dad and me reading will influence her a lot. @blaire 4w
AlaMich There was a book that made the argument that giving tangible rewards like stickers for behavior that you want kids to develop an intrinsic appreciation for had the opposite effect. 4w
AlaMich The theory being, “if they have to give me a sticker or pizza coupon to do X, it must not be a worthwhile activity in its own right.” 4w
Reviewsbylola Yes, that‘s kind of what I was worried about. I think I‘m going to sit on the idea for now and just give her time. @AlaMich 4w
Caroline2 My son refused to read all the way through reception (kindergarten). He would not read a single book and even got upset when I read to him. I just ignored it then he started year 1 in sept and now he can read (he‘s 6 now) and he loves it! I say just give her time. 👍 4w
Amiable This happened with my oldest son—we were afraid he‘d never read. When he hit 2nd grade, though, he took off like a rocket. The secret for him was discovering that he is not a fiction reader —he loves nonfiction. In his kindergarten and 1st grade classes there was a push toward books with stories because they are easier for early readers. He wants facts! Today he is 25 and he still doesn‘t read fiction. 4w
Mdargusch Lots of great advice. Your sister Meredith was never very interested in reading and she loves it now. 🤞🏼 3w

jillrhudy Hey, it happens! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Cinfhen I don‘t know why but I always think of Barbara Streisand when I think of this book 🤷🏼‍♀️I‘m going to suggest this for my bookclub 😃 1mo
Reviewsbylola Beware, it‘s a chunkster! @Cinfhen 1mo

I got to hear the authors speak last night and was so impressed. A lot of what they said made so much sense and the book is gorgeous! It includes a lot of recommended reading too. As soon as I got home, I started buying and reserving books as I perused the lists. 😅

Lynnsoprano I‘ve been perplexed about gifts for our daughter in law for Christmas. Thanks for a great idea! 1mo
Reviewsbylola It‘s got beautiful graphics and illustrations as well as being very helpful! @Lynnsoprano 1mo
ravenlee Ha! I just started this book last night, and was about to tag you in a post about it! 1mo

Reviewsbylola Lolol, I know, I kept telling myself today I need to read that chapter again. 🤦🏼‍♀️ @ravenlee She found a book today she really liked and then had me whisper the words to her so she could “read” it aloud. 🥰 1mo
ravenlee I ❤️ your kid! Have you tried Elephant and Piggie or the Pigeon books? 1mo
Reviewsbylola My older daughter loves those so we read them frequently but she‘s not drawn to them. @ravenlee 4w

The Persephone Biannually arrived yesterday! I am definitely adding their new title Expiation to my list. 😍

saresmoore I‘ve been resisting opening the envelope. Would it be crazy to ask my family for an all-Persephone Christmas? 🙃 1mo
LeahBergen @saresmoore Oh my!!! That would be perfect!! 😍😍 1mo
LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola I‘ve already ordered both of the non-Woolf books. 🤭 1mo

This book was screaming #rescueme from the book sale shelf at the library yesterday. Obviously, I obliged.

Likewise, the plot revolves around a young woman who is begging to be rescued. #movember

BarbaraBB Looking forward to your thoughts on it! 1mo
Cinfhen I SO wanted to love this book but it ultimately left me disappointed 😞 1mo
Mdargusch Darn. I would‘ve actually bought that if I had gone. Good find! 1mo
