The Moons of Jupiter
The Moons of Jupiter | Alice Munro
13 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE 2013 In these piercingly lovely and endlessly surprising stories by one of the most acclaimed current practitioners of the art of fiction, many things happen: there are betrayals and reconciliations, love affairs consummated and mourned. But the true events in The Moons Of Jupiter are the ways in which the characters are transformed over time, coming to view their past selves with an anger, regret, and infinite compassion that communicate themselves to us with electrifying force.

"She liked the sight of a good thick book. A lot of reading in that one, she would say, just as she would say there was a lot of wear in a coat or blanket. Indeed, the book was just like a warm, thick eiderdown that she could pull over herself, snuggle into."

Short stories by Alice Munro. She's so good at understanding all the hidden layers of regular people.

I remember feeling that I was #waiting for my 'real' life to start. And then I read this. 😯 Bit of a gut punch.

Susannah I love how Munro puts into words something we don't even think about. I think that, often, people *don't* stop to think about how they are living their lives in their thirties. It's why so many of us get to our forties (and later) and wonder what the he** happened. It's like we've been trained to think of how our lives are "just beginning" really well, but the transition to actually living them is not something that is talked about. 7y

merelybookish @Susannah Agreed! I remember feeling in my 20s I made a lot of decisions (career, mate, where to live, etc.) And my 30s were about living with those choices. I think Munro's quote is sobering but also worth thinking about! (Still figuring out what the 40s are. Maybe revising inital choices?) 7y

Susannah I think the forties can definitely be that, especially if initial choices were made in a person's twenties. I'm trying to get a jumpstart on my fifties by accepting that while my life may not be everything I've wanted, the divergences from my hopes are not disappointments. 😊 I know too many people in their fifties who can't understand why their lives didn't go the way they expected, and they are distracted by disappointment. (edited) 7y
merelybookish @Susannah Ugh. Distracted by disappointment sounds awful. And depressing. Acceptance sounds much better! Also it would seem one can still make changes to life in your 50s! 7y
Susannah LOL, @merelybookish, you would think so! But perhaps people in their fifties are afraid to make changes so "late" in life, and that's why that disappointment emerges. Hopefully, working towards acceptance (or change) now in my forties will help me to enjoy my fifties. ? 7y

I don't normally read short stories so I tend to forget how much I love Alice Munro's writing. This one has been sitting on my shelf for years and it's only thanks to this year's #readharderchallenge that I finally got around to reading it. Loved every page ❤️

This collection of short stories all deal with characters that are transformed over time, coming to view their past selves with anger, regret, & compassion. In the final story, which is also the title of the book,is about how family relationships are magnified in times of crisis. In the story, the main character's family is mostly grouped around the ailing father, much like moons around Jupiter.

If you haven't read Alice Munro, get to that immediately. But read slowly! The beauty is in her plain, spare language. More on that here --> https://t.co/p9VEopSQgF #readersworkshop

jess_mccoy How did the first RW go? 8y
StephanieY @jess_mccoy it went really well! We had 15 people and everyone has great insights and thoughts about how Munro uses language so effectively. 8y
