Chorus of Mushrooms | Hiromi Goto
12 posts | 4 read | 9 to read
Since its publication in 1994, Hiromi Gotos Chorus of Mushrooms has been recognized as a true classic of Asian Canadian literature. One of the initial entries in NeWest Press long-running Nunatak First Fiction Series, Hiromi Gotos inaugural outing was recognized at the Commonwealth Writers Prizes as the Best First Book in the Caribbean and Canadian regions that year, as well as becoming co-winner of the Canada-Japan book award. Gotos acclaimed feminist novel is an examination of the Japanese Canadian immigrant experience, focusing on the lives of three generations of women in modern day Alberta to better understand themes of privilege and cultural identity. This reprinting of the landmark text includes an extensive introduction and interview with the author, talking about the impact the book has had on the Canadian literary landscape.

Strange and beautifully written. It follows a non-linear timeline. The relationship between the grandmother and granddaughter is beautiful. Will read again

What a beautiful book! Quite amazing it was Goto's debut as well. A magical realist tale about family, immigration, stories, food, the land, and culture. I loved Naoe the grandmother character! So funny and wise. Her relationship with her granddaughter was also great. A fantastic Canadian feminist classic. #CanLit #WeNeedDiverseBooks

Planning my TBR for tomorrow's #Readathon! This is probably ambitious, but I'm already reading the Hiromi Goto novel, two are YA, and one is a comic. Anyone else planning? #Deweys24HourReadathon

WhatDeeReads I love your commitment to reading #QueerBooks. I'm going to be running around for #IndieBookstoreDay. I'm looking forward to following everyone else's readathon posts. 5y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Lucky_LaDee Thanks! What are you doing for #IndieBookstoreDay? Working, shopping?? 5y
WhatDeeReads @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian SHOPPING! All day! Me and a group of friends are going to Milwaukee and buying all the books. We live in Chicago, but we've been to all the bookstores here. It's the perfect time to expand. 5y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Lucky_LaDee That sounds awesome!! Like a book-shopping-athon. 5y

So many great books last month made it hard to pick favourites. All four that I chose made me feel changed.
Notice the question mark in counting nonwhite authors. Joseph Boyden appears to have backed himself into a corner regarding his Indigenous status.

Spiderfelt What has Boyden said about his indigenous status? 6y
Lindy @Spiderfelt He has said he has some Indigenous heritage (but he may have none). More problematic has been his role in speaking on behalf of Indigenous peoples in Canada. http://www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent/the-current-for-january-5-2017-1.3921340/indi... (edited) 6y
DebinHawaii Great month!! 🎉📚👍 6y
Spiderfelt It is a fascinating question, one which I can't honestly participate as I do not have an indigenous background. I watched the full set of Canada Reads debates as Wab Kinew defended The Orenda by Jospeh Boyden as his choice. I can only imagine how difficult this must be for Kinew to question Boyden's authenticity as a voice speaking for his people. 6y

Feminist. Poetic. Power of storytelling. Three generations of women in an immigrant family on an Alberta prairie farm. Slippery, shifting perspective, interwoven with Japanese folk legends. Vibrant. Strong. Gorgeous.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I'm planning to read this one in 2017 too! I've owned a copy for far too long but haven't picked it up yet. 6y
Tsubame You already sold it to me with your previous posts, but now I definitely have to read it this year! 6y
mhillis Great review! I want to read this too 6y

Sapphie is taking her cue from #Bitsy. She seems to think that since I've finished my book, it's time for a belly rub. #dogsofLitsy @LauraBeth

SaraFair All that hair to brush and keep clean! Maybe she will be right side up for us sometime! 6y
Lindy @SaraFair @LauraBeth She is a darling but she hates getting brushed. My friend's recently-deceased spouse was the person who kept her groomed. Lots of adjustments. 🙁 6y
LauraBeth Awww @Lindy that's sweet that you took her in 💕 6y
Lindy @LauraBeth She's only a temporary pooch-pal, while I'm visiting in Auckland. I'm returning to Canada tomorrow. I will miss her and her human companion both. 6y
SaraFair @Lindy -tiny little treats while brushing or on the grooming table always make mine eager to get brushed. I pretend like it's SO special. 6y
Lindy @SaraFair Indeed, treats are the only way to get Sapphie brushed. It's under sufferance, mind you. 6y

If your name is Hank and you have three blond kids, no one will come up to you in the Safeway produce section and point at a vegetable and ask, "What is that?"

"You're not holding your chopsticks quite properly," he said.
"I know. I don't hold my pen properly either. But I can still write. And I can still eat."

[People have commented on my unusual way of holding my pen, so I'm happy when I hear of others.]

Suet624 My son holds his pen that way too. 6y

It's easy to travel distances if you fly on a bed of stories. My mom didn't tell tales at all. And the only make-believe she knew was thinking that she was as white as her neighbour. I wanted to hear bedtime stories, hear lies and truth dissembled. I wanted to fill the hollow with sound and pain. Roar like the prairie wind. Roar like Obāchan.

shawnmooney Ok this quote totally roped me in. Stacked! 6y
Lindy @shawnmooney Yay! It's her very first book (1994) and she looks so young in her author photo. Do you follow Hiromi on Twitter? (@hinganai - beautiful nature photography) (edited) 6y
shawnmooney @Lindy No, I've just heard her name but don't know anything really about her. I will check out her Twitter! 6y
Lacythebookworm This sounds great. I'm not familiar with the author. Thanks for sharing! 😊 6y

I'm leaving today on a 3-week trip and only packing these two print books. BUT my iPod is loaded with audiobooks and an ebook AND I'm going to be staying with a friend who's a former editor at Random House and I know she has great books on her shelves at home PLUS she works at the public library in Auckland. I'm not worried about running out. 😊✈️
