What happens when the father you thought you knew may or may not have a whole other secret family? This is part of this novel‘s storyline...as a family comes to terms with the recent death of the patriarch, a woman comes forward to get part of the inheritance for her children. This was an okay read for me, nothing spectacular, just okay. Anyone chasing an inheritance is #chasingrainbows , chasing dreams. #ayupaugust

Cinfhen Sounds good but I‘m getting the feeling this is a #BorrowNotBuy 😉 5y
squirrelbrain Nice cover though! 😁 5y

Pondering this wee gem. I‘m a huge believer that the right book comes along at the right time for the reader. This backs me up

#TBRtemptation post 1! This is the story of an upper-crust Manhattan family coming undone after its patriarch, Rupert Falkes, dies. He leaves a composed widow behind and 5 sons: a law prof; a Hollywood agent; a doctor and researcher; a jazz trumpist; a federal prosecutor. An unknown woman sues the estate claiming Rupert fathered 2 sons by her. The brothers are confounded and distraught, their mother sympathetic. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

OKAY so far. But does anyone else think she writes like Barbara Vine/Ruth Rendell?

I read this one a few months ago and thought it was okay. Definitely a #familyaffair. #augustgrrrl

Cinfhen Sounds like the perfect choice for today's prompt 💕 7y
Cinfhen I'm surprised it has a low rating ~ it sounds good 🤷‍♀️ 7y
Librarybelle @Cinfhen I was excited to read it when I got it through NetGalley. But, it didn't live up to my full expectation - I've read better this year (though I've definitely read much worse too!). 7y

Cinfhen Was the writing amateurish? 7y
Librarybelle @Cinfhen I wouldn't say amateurish. I remember not being captured by the storyline. The characters weren't stand outs for me. I just remember feeling a little disappointed overall...it was just okay. 7y
Cinfhen Thanks for the honest feedback #somanybookssolittletime 7y

Started off really liking this book, the affect. of unknown heirs making claims on a fathers inheritance. However, that premise wasn't really pursued, and instead we got more of a character study of a man, his wife and children all whom started to resemble each other to their detriment. They were all variations on the same personality and by the end I didn't care about any of them. Not sure what the point was.

The family patriarch passes away, leaving a wife, 5 sons and a couple secrets.

What I liked: I felt like I got to know the characters Rieger chooses to really develop.

What I didn't like: what I call the mini-vignettes within the vignette. Each chapter heading seems to indicate a focus on that character, but it doesn't necessarily happen. The writing style could be choppy and flashbacks mixed into the narrative left me confused. #netgalley

Is it possible to have miniature vignettes within a vignette? Slightly confusing, but I'm moving forward with this. Very different from what I expected when I got this through #netgalley...could be a good thing or a bad thing (I haven't decided yet). #Zeke is keeping me company this morning. #catsoflitsy

After their father's death, his widow and five sons learn he was not quite who they thought. And then they surprise themselves, and each other, in their own reactions. Will I remember this book in a year? Unlikely. But in the depths of my reading slump (I did not finish anything in April!), this book was the only thing that held my interest.

There wasn't much to love about this. It's confusing to read with too many characters (with no redeeming qualities), and the point of view switches every couple of paragraphs. There also doesn't seem to be much of a plot. The patriarch of a family dies, leaving behind his wife and 5 sons, but nothing much comes out of the story. Won't be recommending this. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Still struggling with my reading slump. I have read 15 pages of several different books and given up. I've made it to page 38 of this one! I need to review it for librarything--and I need that push!

Reviewsbylola I hate that feeling! I hope you come out of it soon. 7y
DreesReads @Reviewsbylola it's horrible! I haven't been in such a slump since my teenagers were little kids--and I was still reading lots of kids' books. This is so weird!!! 7y

It was a good book, not great, but good. The central characters are Rupert and Eleanor and their five children. The time spans from Eleanor and Rupert as young people before they met and married to Rupert's death in his 60s. Told in vignettes. A nice story.
