The Quest
The Quest: A Novel | Nelson DeMille
11 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
AUTHOR'S NOTE: An earlier, shorter version of The Quest was published in paperback in 1975. In 2013, I rewrote The Quest and doubled its length, making it, I hope, a far better story than the original, without deviating from the elements that made the story so powerful and compelling when I first wrote it. In other words, what made The Quest worth rewriting remains, and whatever is changed is for the better. I was happy and excited to have this opportunity to rewrite and republish what I consider my first "big" novel, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when I first wrote it. BOOK DESCRIPTION: A sweeping adventure that's equal parts thriller and love story, Nelson DeMille's newest novel takes the reader from the war torn jungles of Ethiopia to the magical city of Rome. While the Ethiopian Civil War rages, a Catholic priest languishes in prison. Forty years have passed since he last saw daylight. His crime? Claiming to know the true location of Christ's cup from the Last Supper. Then the miraculous happens - a mortar strikes the prison and he is free! Old, frail, and injured, he escapes to the jungle, where he encounters two Western journalists and a beautiful freelance photographer taking refuge from the carnage. As they tend to his wounds, he relates his incredible story. Motivated by the sensational tale and their desire to find the location of the holiest of relics, the trio agrees to search for the Grail. Thus begins an impossible quest that will pit them against murderous tribes, deadly assassins, fanatical monks, and the passions of their own hearts. THE QUEST is suspenseful, romantic, and filled with heart-pounding action. Nelson DeMille is at the top of his game as he masterfully interprets one of history's greatest mysteries.

Two rereads for challenges this month: Rebecca (I‘ve probably read five if not more times, it was a childhood favorite, and this is the $2.95 copy I probably bought as a teenager) for #authoramonth, and the tagged book for #Ethiopia #foodandlit, a previous five-star read I‘d hoped to read again.

I‘m planning what to read for #FoodandLit #Ethiopia and I‘m going to cheat a little bit, and jump at the chance to read this one again, largely set in Ethiopia. It was a huge five-star read for me & see my Mom‘s post-it note raving about it as well if you scroll down the posts for this book. It‘s my fave kind of book and I can‘t wait to revisit it!

Butterfinger If your mom endorsed, it must be good. 4y

Librariana Looks like a very proper gentleman! Now he just needs a top hat, a monocle, maybe an ascot, a vest and tuxedo jacket with tails. I mean... it would *only* be the correct attire. 5y

Has anyone read this? It‘s another #tbr I have on my shelf.

TK421 I read this last year. Decent story, the plot didn't drag too much, and it was a different take on the whole grail quest story. I liked it, but there were a couple parts that made me roll my eyes waaaay up there. I'm curious to see what you think. 6y

Pickpick

I️ finished my Q book for #litsyatoz and WOW! What a great book! Very much like my fave author James Rollins: an adventure to solve an ancient mystery, the search for the Holy Grail in war-torn Ethiopia during the early 1970s. Extreme peril along the way. A satisfying conclusion, meaning it wasn‘t rushed and no “deus ex machina.” I️ strongly recommend this book! Two more to go to finish #Litsyatoz: X and V. So close!

Cinfhen Yay !!! 7y
Reecaspieces This is one of his better ones....I think there is a sequel....may be wrong 🤔 7y

Working on my Q book for #litsyatoz. I‘ve never been able to get into a DeMille book but I‘m happy to say this is a first. The “quest” is for the Holy Grail, said to be in an Ethiopian monastery. Unfortunately it is the early 1970s (the book was written slightly later) and Ethiopia is in the midst of a civil war. Think a slightly milder version of a Wilbur Smith book. I‘m 150 pages in and enjoying it so far.

Mehso-so

I love a good adventure novel, and the first half of this was great. I struggled with the slow pace of the 2nd. It focused more on a love triangle and had 2 of the most awkward cringe worthy love scenes that I have ever read. The ending was decent and left nothing unanswered. I would be interested in checking out some of his other books.

I haven't read a good grail quest novel in a while. I dug this out of my tbr stack today. It looked interesting enough, so I figured that I'd give it a try.

JazzFeathers The cover is promising 😊 7y
