Antwerp | Roberto Bolao, Natasha Wimmer

As Bolanos friend and literary executor, Ignacio Echevarra, once suggested, can be viewed as the Big Bang of Roberto Bolanos fictional universe. Reading this novel, the reader is present at the birth of Bolanos enterprise in prose: all the elements are here, highly compressed, at the moment when his talent explodes. From this springboardwhich Bolano chose to publish in 2002, twenty years after hed written it (and even that I cant be certain of)as if testing out a high dive, he would plunge into the unexplored depths of the modern novel. Antwerps fractured narration in 54 sectionsvoices from a dream, from a nightmare, from passers by, from an omniscient narrator, from Roberto Bolano all speakmoves in multiple directions and cuts to the bone.

Pickpick

Brave stuff.

Sure it‘s nearly impossible to understand anything that‘s going on, but the writing is so forceful and unpredictable that I had to love it. I just buckled in and let the...um, narrative? take me wherever it wanted.

It takes a lot to pull off a book like this—you really have to come with some vibrant, visceral prose and moods—but this definitely passes the test. I loved the challenge of it and feel like I learned a lot to boot.

“... Maybe it was the mafia. Maybe they committed suicide. Maybe it was all a dream. The wind in the rocks. The Mediterranean. Blue.”

RaimeyGallant Nice quote! And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. Or if you prefer how-to videos, @chelleo just put some together. 7y

This novella, told in vignettes, is said to be the author‘s favorite of his works. I liked the experimental nature but still thought it felt a little sketched out and unfinished.

Pickpick

It read like a David Lynch movie, with a dreamlike quality. Lots of different characters: shady policeman, hunchback, English author, Jewish girl..... there's murder and a lot of murkiness, no chance of working any of it out! In saying that an enjoyable short read. Something different in between books 📚❤️

JessClark78 I love David Lynch. I'll have to check it out. 8y

I love Bolaño's writing. This is more a book of observations so far, I don't see it being every ones cup of tea unless you're already a big fan. ❤️

Think I'll read this today, another short book. It will be 'A' from my #LitsyAtoZ and also my#LRC15 #translated choice for my Litsy bingo challenge. Definitely can be read in a couple of hours 💞👍🏼📚

TheSloanRanger I have a Bolano on my #LitsyAtoZ too! I've been hooked on him ever since I read 8y
DeborahSmall @picklebacksandpaperbacks I haven't read The Savage Detectives but loved 8y

My #litsyAtoZ I'm using this challenge to read books that I already own. The only one I don't have is Mississippi Blood but it has been preordered for a while. The blank spaces.....I've a few to choose from. I'm on Purple Hibiscus at the moment and loving it 👍🏼📚💞

brilliantglow That's a good list. Lots of solid choices 8y
Faibka Great to see Roberto Bolaño on this list! I have him as well for my challenge ? 8y

bookdrunkard78 I'm so glad I saw this! I was struggling with X! I found some, but none that didn't just feel like crossing a letter off a list! I looked up your X selection and added it to my library reserve list! 8y
DeborahSmall @bookdrunkard78 I ordered this before Xmas and it arrived today. Looks great so it's now officially in my list! 💕 8y
DeborahSmall @Faibka it's a very short book. But he himself said it's his best so I had to add it. I changed my mind 4 times for 'A' but this is in my 'good' notebook and will not/ cannot be changed 😜💞 8y
JonathanDunne I especially like your 'B' option :) 8y
DeborahSmall @JonathanDunne yeah not bad 😜 8y
RohitSawant Great list! And I love your handwriting! 8y
LilMamaMastro Terrific idea; now I'm going to do the same! 8y
Faibka @DeborahSmall I have a 'good' notebook as well! 😆 I'm also writing my list today on it so, no turning back! 8y
Cinfhen You've got some really great ones and a bunch are super chunky reads🙌🏻💕📚 8y
LeahBergen I have my list written out but I've left them all blank! 😂 I still plan to do it with books I own (except X) but I'm too fickle to commit. 8y
DeborahSmall @rohit-sawant You are seriously the first person to say that 😂 my husband says my handwriting is worse than a 5 yr olds! So thank you 😄 8y
DeborahSmall @Cinfhen I have really only started reading shorter books. I don't really enjoy short stories or novellas. My average on goodreads was in 390's for 2016 but 2015 was close to 500. I need to shake off some stubborn reading habits this year! X 8y
DeborahSmall @LeahBergen my Litsy bingo card challenge has only my current read beside it. 'Born in same year' I didn't even bother with a January TBR as out of the 'planned' December pile I read one and another random 4, one of which was my friggin 'y' choice for AtoZ. But I'm determined to read the books I own...not that it will stop me buying new books 😆💞 8y
Cinfhen I used to LOVE chunky reads and felt cheated if a book was less than 450 pages but now I'm satisfied if the story feels fully fleshed! But I HATE lazy, rushed endings or long drawn out drivel 8y
DeborahSmall @Faibka I Love stationary and have few notebook on the go but once it was written into my good hardback notebook then it got serious 😉 @LilMamaMastro I have so many book lists, I couldn't get through my year without it! 💕 8y
MrBook Good strategy 😊👍🏻! Nice nails 😎👌🏻! 8y
