Books of Magic (Deluxe) | Neil Gaiman
11 posts | 24 read | 19 to read
A "NEW YORK TIMES" BESTSELLER From Neil Gaiman, the bestselling novelist and creator of the world-renowned comics title The Sandman, comes a mesmerizingtale of the dangers and opportunities of youth, and its endless possibilities. Illustrated by four of comics' most accomplished artists, John Bolton, Scott Hampton, Charles Vess and Paul Johnson, THE BOOKS OF MAGIC collects all four issues of the original miniseries that introduced the character of Timothy Hunter and set the stage for his continuing adventures. Timothy Hunter could be the most powerful magician in the world, but does he really want to be? Guided through the magicalworld starting at the begining of time by a group of DC Universe magicians, often refered to as the Trenchcoat Brigade (JohnConstantine, Phantom Stranger, Mister E, and Doctor Occult), they attempt to aid Timothy in his decision whether or not toembrace his gift. However, by the time Timothy makes a choice, it may have already been made for him."

Someone described this to me as Neil Gaiman meets Harry Potter so I knew I had to give it ago.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Oh I love this so much! Hope you enjoy. 5y

This is for you, @LeahBergen—This shop is called The Battery Park Book Exchange...and Champagne Bar! I‘m never leaving.

Meanwhile, my city is getting slammed by Florence. I‘m enjoying the peace and electricity while I can!

Lcsmcat Where is this? I must take a field trip! Stay safe. We‘re getting rain and high winds but no flooding yet. 6y
Leftcoastzen Beautiful! I hope you are having some fun. I know it‘s a big worry , sounds like you have friends looking out for you and giving updates. (edited) 6y

MamaGina Love this place, whenever I visit I can never decide where to sit because there are so many lovely nooks & crannies. I enjoy getting something sweet and a pot of French press coffee when I‘m there ... delicious.🤓 6y
saresmoore @LeahBergen I did! I found a beautiful collector‘s edition of Mann‘s The Magic Mountain and a slipcased & illustrated copy (not FS) of Eugene Onegin. It was hard to choose! They even had several locked glass cases full of the really special books. 😍 6y
saresmoore @Notafraidofwords The waiting and unknown has been really tough on all of us, mentally, but we are hanging on to hope. Your prayers are so appreciated. ♥️ 6y
Moray_Reads I hope the beautiful shop and books are taking the edge off the waiting. Please post a picture of your Onegin, of love to see it 😘 6y

Yo-yo is a wonderful owl companion.

The artwork simply blew me away. I was unprepared for the brilliance of the illustrations and the unique tale.

Sorry, one more post about The Books of #Magic (because what is Litsy for if not me telling you guys about little known Neil Gaiman awesomeness?) but what‘s more magic than a Charles Vess illustrated Fairy Market, showing up here 6 years before it reappears in Stardust. #NuYear

The Books of Magic also gives us cameos by Dream, Death, and Destiny of the Endless and Queen Titania of Fairy. And I love it.

Cinfhen You really know how to sell fantasy🙌🏻❤️ 7y

In The Books of #Magic The Phantom Stranger shows Tim Hunter the history of magic, John Constantine introduces him to the major players in the DC Universe like Zatanna and Dr Fate shown above, Dr Occult takes Tim to the Other Realms including Fairy and Dream, and Mr E takes Tim into Magic‘s perilous future.

It really is Gaiman‘s treatise on magic as a whole, and nearly every character offers their own definition, like Dr Fate above. #NuYear

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Shortly after Dr Fate‘s speech, Constantine calls his take on things bollocks. 7y

Buckle up, because I may have just gone overboard for the #NuYear

In the early ‘90s when Sandman was at its peak, DC asked Neil Gaiman to do a miniseries tying together all of DC‘s magical characters.

In The Books of #Magic Tim Hunter (bespectacled teen wizard with an owl before it was cool) is taken on a tour of magic by 4 magical practitioners with similar fashion sense (the Phantom Stranger, John Constantine, Mr E, and Dr Occult.)

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Constantine repeatedly refers to this crew as the Trenchcoat Brigade, to the continual consternation of the others. 7y

GatheringBooks so i checked goodreads. is there an omnibus of this that collects all the series into one? or is the one written by neil gaiman the MUST read? thanks! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @GatheringBooks Good question! The one written by Gaiman is the only must read, it collects his 4 issues that introduce Tim Hunter. The ongoing series was kind of meandering, and while there are several trades they just kind of stop after awhile leaving most of it uncollected. Only bother with the Gaiman! 7y

Yes, yes, they are. Say it proud.
Mural on bookstore owned by author Emma Straub and her husband in Brooklyn, New York. Small, well curated selection and an amazing line up of author signings and talks. Well worth seeking out. #nyc #indiebookstore #indie #bookstore

Mehso-so

I love Neil Gaiman, but I just wasn't in the mood for this book. Interesting story with some fun Sandman crossovers, but a bit on the dry side.

It's -20 degrees outside, so I'm bundled up with a book and a cat. Can't complain! Is anyone else in North America dealing with this crazy polar vortex right now?

Ashley_Nicoletto Yes! It's so cold that you really can't leave the house. 8y

And on to the next! The husband and I picked this one over a year ago because it looked very Harry Potter-ish and also it's by Neil Gaiman, so it probably has to be fantastic.

DivineDiana It does look like Harry! 😉 8y
abbiereadsbooks @DivineDiana Not gonna lie, this cover makes me wish the HP universe had flying skateboards instead of brooms. Can you imagine how much cooler Quidditch would be?! 8y
