History's People
History's People: Personalities and the Past | Margaret MacMillan
7 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
In Historys People internationally acclaimed historian Margaret MacMillan gives her own personal selection of figures of the past, women and men, some famous and some little-known, who stand out for her. Some have changed the course of history and even directed the currents of their times. Others are memorable for being risk-takers, adventurers, or observers. She looks at the concept of leadership through Bismarck and the unification of Germany; William Lyon MacKenzie King and the preservation of the Canadian Federation; Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the bringing of a unified United States into the Second World War. She also notes how leaders can make huge and often destructive mistakes, as in the cases of Hitler, Stalin, and Thatcher. Richard Nixon and Samuel de Champlain are examples of daring risk-takers who stubbornly went their own ways, often in defiance of their own societies. Then there are the dreamers, explorers, and adventurers, individuals like Fanny Parkes and Elizabeth Simcoe who manage to defy or ignore the constraints of their own societies. Finally, there are the observers, such as Babur, the first Mughal emperor of India, and Victor Klemperer, a Holocaust survivor, who kept the notes and diaries that bring the past to life. Historys People is about the important and complex relationship between biography and history, individuals and their times.

I don‘t recall how many points a podcast is, but I‘ll find out. Crime and spookiness equals points for #TeamSlaughter!

Today‘s book question :

What time frame do you enjoy reading about ? If you don‘t like NF history or historical fiction, then is there a time frame you prefer ? Like modern day, maybe the 1970s, 1950s.....1930s......

Please repost with a book you enjoyed from that time frame.

Thanks ! Keep it up, you guys are doing great.

Andrew65 Thanks for reposting 😊👍 4y

Crazeedi To tell the truth, I read books from all time periods, I love the Tudor and Elizabethan periods, but I dont limit myself. Right now I'm reading this, @ljuliel 4y
TheEllieMo @Crazeedi I read from all time periods too, but the early to mid 16th century holds a special fascination for me for non-fiction. 4y
Crazeedi @TheEllieMo it's a wild period! 4y

DrexEdit Great question! I'll read any time frame if it's a good story. I mostly tend to read NF by topic, and it's usually science-heavy. That said I do like ancient Rome. Reading the tagged book now. 4y
Andrew65 @DrexEdit That‘s a book I want to read. 4y

EadieB I like to read about The Revolutionary War Period - 1770 (Boston Tea Party) thru 1776 - (Signing of Declaration of Independence). 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB I really need to read more about this period, been interested in some of Steve Berry‘s writing about this period. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think I told you this before but I really enjoyed this biography of George Washington as it also included a lot about The Revolutionary War 4y
CoffeeCatsBooks My favorite is Ancient Rome. I love Robert Harris‘ Cicero series. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks for the reminder. I also want to read his book on Alexander Hamilton. 4y
EadieB @Andrew65 I own that one too! Definitely like this period of early US Presidents and Cabinet. 4y
Andrew65 @CoffeeCatsBooks Rome books are among my favourites, and Roman Britain. Love Robert Harris books, the Cicero series and Pompeii book too. Also love the books by Ben Kane and Anthony Riches. 4y
Andrew65 @EadieB It is definitely a period for me to explore further. 4y
CoffeeCatsBooks I liked his Pompeii book too. I‘m not familiar with the The Forgotten Legion, so I‘ll add that to my TBR pile! 4y
Andrew65 @CoffeeCatsBooks I love that trilogy, as well as his Hannibal and Spartacus books. 4y
kwmg40 I don't have a favourite time period, as I find all of them interesting in their own ways. However, your choice of book for this blurb reminded me that I really loved Margaret MacMillan's Paris 1919. It was so informative and well written. 4y
Andrew65 @kwmg40 Sounds great. 4y

This book is based on the author's Massey lectures so I was hopeful it would be nice and accessible for plebians like me.

The book was ok, and I learned a few interesting tidbits of history but the format that worked for the lectures didn't work in the book. You get random people from random time periods thrown together. They are supposed to be connected by their traits like hubris or daring, but it all gets very confusing.
