“The typical Anarchist, then, may be defined as follows: A man perceptible by the spirit of revolt under one or more of its forms, — opposition, investigation, criticism, innovation, — endowed with a strong love of liberty, egoistic or individualistic, and possessed of great curiosity, a keen desire to know.”

#BookReport @Cinfhen
Finished two books this week! 😊 The Ballad was a fun return to the Hunger Games world, and Anarchism was an interesting mix of relevant/outdated and progressive/elitist.

#WeeklyForecast
I'm hoping to finish Stamped and Fruit, both of which I'm LOVING, this week. And of course planning on more hours of bookish snuggles with #Pippin. 🥰 #dogsoflitsy #bostonterriersoflitsy

Scochrane26 I‘m reading Ballad right now. 5y

How fun to encounter Frühlings Erwachen, the 1906 play on which the Broadway musical Spring Awakening is based, in this 1910 essay by an anarchist! Love the musical. ❤️ #SerialReader

“We Americans claim to be a peace loving people... yet our hearts swell with pride at the thought that America is becoming the most powerful nation on earth, and that it will eventually plant her iron foot on the necks of all other nations.

Such is the logic of patriotism.”

Still working my way through this book. Still not an anarchist ...lots of great points though.

Haroon_Ishaq Apart from being politically anarchist Emma Goldman tells the truth of our society in its many forms 6y

“No subject of equal social import has received such extensive consideration within the last few years as the question of prison and punishment.”

Chrissyreadit It sounds like we have not progressed much since the book was published. 7y
Samplergal We have not. Very discouraged 7y

“We Americans claim to be a peace-loving people. We hate bloodshed; we are opposed to violence. Yet we go into spasms of joy over the possibility of projecting dynamite bombs from flying machines upon helpless citizens. “

RaimeyGallant So sad. 7y
DivineDiana Not all Americans. 😞 7y
Samplergal @DivineDiana so very true. I‘m saddened where my country has devolved. 7y

“The people are urged to be patriotic and for that luxury they pay, not only by supporting their "defenders," but even by sacrificing their own children. Patriotism requires allegiance to the flag, which means obedience and readiness to kill father, mother, brother, sister.”

“The strange phenomenon of the opposition to Anarchism is that it brings to light the relation between so-called intelligence and ignorance”. I‘ve read four of the essays so far. I‘m really enjoying this. Is that bad? 😂

GingerAntics No, she has really good points. 7y
Samplergal @GingerAntics I am loving it and so how I feel. 7y
GingerAntics I think I‘m going to have to add that to my serial reader account. This needs to happen. Seriously. 7y

Samplergal @GingerAntics 👍🏼. I'm an old hippie and am mortified where we are presently. I marched in Dc for ERA and Roe v Wade. I remember coat hangers and back street deaths. This generation needs to realize legal is safe. 7y
GingerAntics Wow, you have stories to tell. Maybe you should write a book. I would gladly read it. I don‘t understand how anyone doesn‘t get that if something is legalised, it is regulated, and thus safer. It‘s just logic. Although, personally, I‘m pretty sure for most people “sanctity of life” only applies when it‘s preventing someone from doing something they disagree with, and nothing else. Otherwise we would have better gun laws already. 7y
GingerAntics You could probably call me a hippie that was born a few decades late for most of that stuff. lol 7y

Visiting Baltimore for the weekend and stopped in Red Emma's, a radical bookstore with a cooperatively owned, collectively managed cafe attached. Perfect place to sit, read and browse.

MyNamesParadise Awesome!! I live in Anne Arundel Co which is south of the City. Cool to know Littens are near by!! 8y
Samplergal Love Red Emma‘s! I used to live in Bmore 7y

Listening to the radical and brilliant #EmmaGoldman (1869-1940) discuss all sorts of topics (not just #anarchism). This woman was light years ahead of her time. It's interesting to hear how things have changed, yet so much hasn't changed at all. 😔 #audiobooks #librivox #resistance
