Keeping Kids Reading
Keeping Kids Reading: How to Raise Avid Readers in the Video Age | Mary Leonhardt
11 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
Avid readers are fluent readers: they absorb information more easily, they write better, they perform better on standardized tests. In Keeping Kids Reading, Mary Leonhardt shows parents how to instill a love of reading in their children and how to nurture that love, in spite of the temptations of television, video games, and computers. Based on observation and interviews with students and more than twenty-five years in the classroom, Leonhardt has formulated an innovative new concept called "reading pathways" that facilitates parents' understanding of their children's taste in books. Once you recognize your children's reading patterns, you'll find it easy, using Leonardt's methods, to appeal to their individual tastes and help move them along the path to a lifelong love of reading.

Both as parents and as teachers, we've been thinking a lot about how we can help kids continue to be readers even when they're not physically in school. On this episode of Unabridged, we share ideas about what to prioritize when we're talking to kids about reading.⠀

If you're looking for ideas about how to help children move through books or about how to make sure our kids and students have access to reading material, take a listen.⠀

Also, be sure to listen for details about how to access an exciting FREE resource just filled with curated links and materials.⠀

How are you helping the kids in your life--whether they're your own children at home or your students--continue growing as readers?

BookmarkTavern Constantly reading. I ended downloading a lot of Sesame Street books that were available and we have a set time everyday where we read together. 5y

I usually see moms give a tablet or phone to their kids to keep them busy and quiet. Today I saw a woman reading a book to her daughter on the subway. It made me happy. 📖😄❤️

Ranchan I might do it from my phone, because I love the convenience of the Kindle app, but yaaaaaaaaaaas!! 6y

This is depressing. So many Litsy parents have kids who read, another reason this place is awesome. https://www.studyfinds.org/study-third-teens-havent-read-book-past-year/

wanderinglynn That‘s heartbreaking. 6y

Love this pic by @avi.reads ! We totally think you should spur their love for reading early on ❤️😍Do you think we should start kids reading young?

Seekingtardis I think showing kids, when they are young, that books are fun helps them to not resent books when they are forced to read for a grade at an older age. 7y
dr.misery.grey The younger the better! 7y
readinginthedark I've been reading to my son since he was in the womb! Full support here! 7y

At bathtime, the 3yo told me: "read five books ok? It will give me strength."
He fell asleep after the third book though! ?
