Beware of Pity
Beware of Pity | Stefan Zweig, Trevor Blewitt
Wes Anderson on Stefan Zweig: "I had never heard of Zweig...when I just more or less by chance bought a copy of Beware of Pity. I loved this first book. I also read the The Post-Office Girl. The Grand Budapest Hotel has elements that were sort of stolen from both these books. Two characters in our story are vaguely meant to represent Zweig himself -- our "Author" character, played by Tom Wilkinson, and the theoretically fictionalised version of himself, played by Jude Law. But, in fact, M. Gustave, the main character who is played by Ralph Fiennes, is modelled significantly on Zweig as well." "Stefan Zweig was a dark and unorthodox artist; it's good to have him back."--Salman Rushdie The great Austrian writer Stefan Zweig was a master anatomist of the deceitful heart, and Beware of Pity, the only novel he published during his lifetime, uncovers the seed of selfishness within even the finest of feelings. Hofmiller, an Austro-Hungarian cavalry officer stationed at the edge of the empire, is invited to a party at the home of a rich local landowner, a world away from the dreary routine of the barracks. The surroundings are glamorous, wine flows freely, and the exhilarated young Hofmiller asks his host's lovely daughter for a dance, only to discover that sickness has left her painfully crippled. It is a minor blunder that will destroy his life, as pity and guilt gradually implicate him in a well-meaning but tragically wrongheaded plot to restore the unhappy invalid to health.

A young Austrian officer befriends a local millionaire and his family, but in particular the man's crippled daughter, Edith, for whom he feels sorry. The consequences are terrible.
But there is so much more to the story. As always, Zweigs‘ plot unfolds through things left unsaid, situations misread.
The only possible downside to this book is that it would be even more powerful if he‘d written it as a novella.

#WeeklyForecast 45/19

A new month means another 50 pages of Proust - like I‘ve been doing since 2017. This is the last book in the series but it‘ll take months to finish it.
I just started the tagged book. Zweig is becoming a favorite author.
Next will be a shorty for the #1001books list, The Glass Bees.
I guess that will be it for this week but just in case, I added the next one for the #ReadingUSA2019 challenge, We are Called to Rise.

Cinfhen I‘m guessing that‘s your Nevada pick 1mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Yes! Weren‘t you the one who suggested it? 1mo
Cinfhen I think so 😬🤞🏼🤞🏼 1mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Its premise looks great! I hope I‘ll get to it this wel but that may be a bit too ambitious 😉 1mo

Gissy Ahhh ok🤗🎉🎊So excited! If it is in its way, I can patiently wait!😃👍 1mo
LibrarianRyan If you saw my last note please ignore it. I got my swaps mixed up. I have not received anything yet (though I‘m not home). If mine is one of the missing it does NOT need to be replaced. Your mental health and frustrations are more important than a box will ever be. 1mo
lele1432 I haven't received mine yet, but hoping it comes tomorrow! 1mo
KatieDid927 I never received a package. 1mo

Twainy Thank you for putting this together. If someone didn‘t get a box I could send one IF I got it right 😊 1mo
ulrichyumiodd I can also send a replacement if needed. I have a few extra items (they arrived after I already sent my box), so I‘d be happy to send them to someone who didn‘t get a box (with a few books, of course). 1mo
Gissy I still haven't received the box of #AllHallowsReadSwap but don't worry maybe something happened to the person or the box in the delivery process. Things happen and we have to understand. I still enjoyed the activity and I will participate next year again🤗🎃🖤🖤🖤🖤 1mo
MaleficentBookDragon @KatieDid927 did you receive the package I sent you? 1mo
KatieDid927 @MaleficentBookDragon Yes, sorry. I‘ve been in a bad place emotionally so I haven‘t been posting or active on social media at all. But I received it, thanks! 1mo

#QuotsyJuly18 Day 18: When one perceives one‘s self with #Disgust, and not deserving of love, then life will be very sad indeed.

Aimeesue That is one of the saddest sentences I have ever read. Every human being is worthy of dignity and respect, even from oneself. 🙁 1y
GatheringBooks @Aimeesue agreed. even more heartbreaking if it is part of one‘s self-definition. 1y

I have been particularly tardy with my book posts over the last few months. I finished this one long before Christmas but it‘s a great book. I enjoyed it for its creeping sense of dread and “OH NO YOU DIDN‘T” moments.

Just finished watching Beware of Pity. Absolutely incredible. So fraught and raw there were times I could hardly bear to watch. I only wish I spoke German so that I didn't need to rely on the subtitles. I recommend it to everyone. Here's that link again, just in case 😉 http://www.pushkinpress.com/beware-of-pity-watch-it-live/

If there are any #StefanZweig fans there's a link to Simon McBurney's sold out stage adaptation of Beware of Pity at the Barbican on the Pushkin Press website. It's only available until 26th February! I know what I'll be doing with my Saturday night. http://www.pushkinpress.com/beware-of-pity-watch-it-live/

I absolutely adored this book. It was dark, melancholy, beautiful, and deeply unsettling. Finished it over a week ago, and still thinking of it nearly everyday. I need to buy my own copy, since this is a book I'll definitely be rereading.

Read this book in one of my book clubs last year and I liked it very much. A great period book that explores human feelings and how decisions based on them can change our lives and that of those around us drastically.

I've yet to read a Stefan Zweig book that didn't make me look at humanity differently, if only for a moment.

Trav This is one of my favourite books. An absolute masterpiece. 4y
