Summer Will Show
Summer Will Show | Sylvia Townsend Warner

Sophia Willoughby, a young Englishwoman from an aristocratic family and a person of strong opinions and even stronger will, has packed her cheating husband off to Paris. He can have his tawdry mistress. She intends to devote herself to the serious business of raising her two children in proper Tory fashion. Then tragedy strikes: the children die, and Sophia, in despair, finds her way to Paris, arriving just in time for the revolution of 1848. Before long she has formed the unlikeliest of close relations with Minna, her husbands sometime mistress, whose dramatic recitations, based on her hair-raising childhood in czarist Russia, electrify audiences in drawing rooms and on the street alike. Minna, magnanimous and unscrupulous, fickle, ardent, and interfering, leads Sophia on a wild adventure through bohemian and revolutionary Paris, in a story that reaches an unforgettable conclusion amidst the bullets, bloodshed, and hope of the barricades. Sylvia Townsend Warner was one of the most original and inventive of twentieth-century English novelists. At once an adventure story, a love story, and a novel of ideas, Summer Will Show is a brilliant reimagining of the possibilities of historical fiction.

This was the wildest op shop I have ever been to. Heaps of foreign languages & the 🎶 was fantastic. It was like a rave was happening & it was in an industrial area. I will get my clever friend to make me something out of the Prints Charming fabric on the left and to fix the👗for me. The top is quite big but I just loved the Mexican look of it. The bird book 🦅 will end up as Xmas decorations. I thought the forest book was gorgeous for my niece.

Now is that time of year where we‘re all #frozen and hoping Summer Will Show. It‘s so far off though. 😆

This one sounds like a wild ride. Sophia has sent her cheating husband off to another county to be with his mistress. She focuses on her children, but when the children die, she is unmoored. Sophia ends up in Paris, where she befriends her husband‘s mistress.

This sounds riveting but I hated the one Townsend book I‘ve read. #winterwonderland

Cinfhen Riveting?? I say depressing!!! Like your creative interpretation 🤓 6y

Found a used bookstore with a resident kitty friend! I also found several Brookner novels. 😏 I ended up purchasing a copy of The Luminaries (based on @Billypar ‘s review) and a 1936 copy of the tagged book.

saresmoore @ReadingEnvy I‘ve yet to disprove your Brookner theory! This is a book exchange in Waynesville, NC, near Lake Junaluska—neat little town. 6y
AmyG I loved The Luminaries. FYI-it‘s a very slow, meticulous read....and it‘s wonderful. 6y
Lindy @AmyG I agree; meticulous and wonderful. @saresmoore , it might help to keep in mind that the length of the chapters keeps decreasing by half, until they get very short. 6y
Bookwomble Cute kids and cat ? Have you read Warner's "Kingdoms of Elfin"? If not, you should! ? 6y
RealBooks4ever Kitty paws! 🐾😻 6y
saresmoore @AmyG @Lindy Well, I do like slow and meticulous! I was pleased to find a secondhand copy in great condition—eliminates the anxiety of library fines for a slow reader like me. 6y
saresmoore @Bookwomble I haven‘t read it, but I certainly will! Thank you! 6y

tracey38 I love when stores have resident fur-friends. There is a used book store near me that has some dogs. I haven't been yet but it's on my list to do soon! 6y
ReadingEnvy @saresmoore my favorite nc mtn bookstore town other than Asheville is tryon...if you need another destination! Is this one that you are at down one street from the main drag, lots of books in piles on the floor, and no A/C? 6y
saresmoore @ReadingEnvy That‘s the one! Ha! Great description. I will check out Tryon if we get another day added to our evac. 😅 (edited) 6y
emilyhaldi ❤️❤️❤️ Luminaries has been on my list forever! (edited) 6y
