The Uninvited Guests | Sadie Jones
20 posts | 30 read | 25 to read
It's rural England, just after the turn of the last century. Charlotte married Edward Shift after the sudden death of her first husband, Horace Torrington. They live at Sterne, the home they are in danger of losing due to a financial crisis, with Charlotte's 3 children: Emerald, Clovis and Smudge. On the day of Emerald's birthday party, a terrible train wreck occurs on a branch line and the stranded passengers seek refuge at Sterne. Among these passengers is Charlie Traversham-Beechers, a sketchy figure from Charlotte's past. This unusual guest list makes for an unforgettable birthday celebration for Emerald and an evening of the past literally coming back to haunt Charlotte.

Mehso-so

This is one of those books that makes you say “what??” But not in a curious or surprised way. The start of the book had a good base and could have been fun or interesting but the second half of the book broke out into chaos and left me confused. Smudge was the most interesting character, but everyone had serious personality defects. All of that being said, I kind of enjoyed it. 😂

Bailedbailed

Well this month is a bust! Both #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin are a bail.

My #bookspin book The Uninvited Guests was just not grabbing me.

My #doublespin book Woman in the Shadows is second in a series! Can't start there! Oh and the first book wasn't published in the US!

Oh well... @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes that happens!! That's super aggravating about the second-book-in-a-series thing. That drives me crazy! Who publishes the 2nd book without publishing the 1st?! 4y
aroc @TheAromaofBooks I know right!!! Amazon has a few copies so I should have mine soon! 🤣 4y

#bookreview I don‘t even know where to begin. I‘m surprised I finished this book. The only redeemable thing was there were a couple of characters with potential. Otherwise, I was just confused the entire time - I‘m not even sure what it was about - like it lacked a cohesive plot. It just stumbled along and then ended. Very disappointed.

#24b4Monday progress - it‘s 2:00 pm Sunday in Hawaii. Probably won‘t quite get to 24 hours, but just might make it to 20! That‘s so much more than I expected and I‘ve loved every minute of it!!

nickismith What are you using for your reading timer? 5y
JenniferTapler @nickismith the stopwatch feature on my phone. I just pause and restart it over and over and it keeps going. 5y
JenniferTapler @nickismith it‘s with the alarm clock on iPhone 5y

#currentlyreading - this jumped out at me at my local used bookstore yesterday and I decided to go ahead and start it as my 3rd book for #24b4Monday. Always happy to support Maui Friends of the Library! #MFOTL #FOTL

Pickpick

This was an interesting little gothic-style ghost story. More was explained than in a written-in-the-period gothic ghost story, and the character lessons are more complex. Good vacation read. Everyone wants a New England vacation during a heat wave, right? At least the view from the mini-golf course is nice.

I took a photo of my hotel patio reading spot, but this leopard frog we saw on our hike was more interesting. When I'm not hiking or socializing or otherwise vacationing, I'm enjoying the odd little book that's tagged.

After many flights, I finally figured out that I can't concentrate on Classics or nonfiction while on a plane.

My daughter's been using my Kindle since the screen on hers went out, so I have a mix of her books and mine. First for me today is The Uninvited Guests, a title I learned about from Litsy!

And if that doesn't last me from one ocean to the other, I've got backups.

Crazeedi Great deals on kindle on Amazon prime through end of today!! 5y
ImperfectCJ @Crazeedi Yep! We ordered one the other day. I forgot about Prime Day, so the discount was a pleasant surprise! 5y
Crazeedi @ImperfectCJ 👍 I almost ordered another on just to have, then though no you dont need to spend money. The new paperwhite has audio which mine doesn't 5y

A spooky tale that never really reveals what‘s going on, this requires complete suspension of disbelief, but I enjoyed the weird vibe, and it‘s beautifully written.

LET‘S GET RIDICULOUS

“What else could happen on Emerald's birthday....her step-father leaves for one day to try to save their home, a friend isn't coming for her birthday, a suitor who isn't anyone she likes gives her a gift, a train accident that causes twenty or more "uninvited guests" to stay at their home, and more.”

Mshookquilts Lol...more like she was still setting everything up & I was halfway through the book. Yeah. I don‘t have time for this. I‘m sure someone else will get to the humor part & enjoy it. @TiaQueso (edited) 7y

This was hard! I love all of the above. But in my mind you can‘t beat a good old-fashioned haunted house ghost story. And my current favorite scary book isn‘t so much scary as it is spooky - The Uninvited Guests by Sadie Jones. I‘ve seen mixed reviews, but I adored it. So atmospheric and even a little fun. 👻💀🖤 #boobooks

This book was a slow read for me. Then, toward the end, it just got weird. While far from the worst book I've ever read, it's not making me jump to read anything else by Sadie Jones. Not my cup of tea.

emtobiasz Agreed! I'm not sure what this book was trying to do... ☕️ 👻 7y
LitHousewife And the horse storyline was just ridiculous all around. Maybe I should have gone thumbs down. Boo! 7y

This is the latest book to call to me from my book shelf. I'm hoping a bit of Downton era soap opera will be just the thing to finish out the month of July.

Soubhiville Fun cover! 7y

This was a creative book. It seemed like a British manners comedy until it was a mystery and then it had elements of something else more spectral. Many genres had their moments here. Several characters were quite insufferable and therefore amusing. The proper hosts have to deal with mayhem in the form of train wreck survivors crashing an estate birthday party in the 1800's. Shock and outrage ensue. The more guests the merrier! Not!

Insufferably written with rude characters and a sketchy plot, i had to pull the plug on it which seems fitting given the jacket art...

21 pages in and the editing, or lack there of, is driving me crazy. I'm determined to push on though.

deniselynn It's taking me forever to finish this. 70 more pages to go & so far it's about a two & a half, out of five, star review. 8y
