Amid the brutality of Auschwitz during the Holocaust, a forbidden gift helps two teenage girls find hope, friendship, and the will to live in this novel in verse thats based on a true story. An act of defiance. A statement of hope. A crime punishable by death. Making a birthday card in Auschwitz was all of those things. But that is what Zlatka did, in 1944, for her best friend, Fania. She stole and bartered for paper and scissors, secretly creating an origami heart. Then she passed it to every girl at the work tables to sign with their hopes and wishes for happiness, for love, and most of allfor freedom. Fania knew what that heart meant, for herself and all the other girls. And she kept it hidden, through the bitter days in the camp and through the death marches. She kept it always. This novel is based on the true story of Fania and Zlatka, the story of the bond that helped them both to hope for the best in the face of the worst. Their heart is one of the few objects created in Auschwitz, and can be seen today in the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre.

“The Germans Arrived

in June of 1941

the beginning of summer

when hope

should have

hung in blue-filled skies.

But hope burned away

in the heat of summer.

First came the yellow armbands

branding all us Jews.

Then came the fences

closing out the rest of the world.”

#3 i have read a lot if this book and its so good!! everything about this book is so realistic, it puts feelings into words i would of never thought of. its is first person alternating so Zlatka and Fania narrate the book. they are 2 very thoughtful and brave people with no fear of the nazi. the book genre is fiction, and i think would recommend it to people who like wwll books.

MissYaremcio I am so glad you like this book! I‘m going to put it on my to-read list!! 5y

I just started this book on tuesday and i am only on page 15, but it is a real page turner already! the book got into action very fast. Zlatka is a teenage girl in 1941, her family is jewish and the war is tearing everybody apart. it started with yellow armbands basically branding the jewish. then it was the fences enclosing them from the rest of the world. (more in comments)

bridget.db and then it was ten people to a three room apartment. i have not gotten very far but if you like a book about war and family, this one is for you!! 5y

True story of 2 girls who become friends while in a concentration camp in WW2 Germany-heartbreaking. The paper hearts given to each other kept them close in the most #perilousplace a child could be. 💔

#Gratitude30 Day 26: The book is written in two voices: Zlatka and her friend Fania. Both girls are interned in Auschwitz and the reader gets to see the world through their eyes – from the #time that they were with their family, to the #time they were taken by German soldiers, their horrendous #time at the concentration camp, and their eventual emancipation when the Allied forces arrived. Apparently I own very little books with a shape in the title. This book, written in verse, tells the story of two girls in Auschwitz. Based on a true story, it is heartbreaking and devastating yet somehow the message of hope comes across clearly.

The one problem with working in a library: on slow days in the Teen Lair, with all projects completed, and there are SO MANY books around that I can't read😭the urge to read is strong!!

A beautifully written novel in verse that describes the haunting reality of living at Auschwitz and the story of two girls who defied all odds. I would only recommend this to your most mature readers 💙 #teachersoflitsy #litsyAToZ

Holocaust books get me every time. A quick read since it's written in verse. It is based on real events. Though the story is named Paper Hearts I feel like the event which the book was based on should have gotten more mention in the story. Overall a good book about horrible events.

Do you ever get so consumed with a book that when you look up from the pages it takes you awhile to come back down to earth? This book did that for me. I'm not a fan of books written in verse but this book was so beautifully done that I didn't feel like I was reading poems. The story unfolds so naturally and the words are so vivid and just beautiful. This was based on true events and the strength of these girls is truly inspiring. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have never read a book written in verse. I tend to stay away from them but I'm really enjoying this book.

This is one poem that's more abstract but the others pull the story together so nicely and it clicks.

Told in verse & based on actual people & events, Paper Hearts is a harrowing story of a few Jewish girls in Auschwitz. The devastation they witnessed & endured is made more powerful by the staccato & sometimes simplicity of the verses.

"What have we done
To deserve such abuse?"

"People knew.
People didn't,
wouldn't,
couldn't
believe."
