SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE! November 1989. MI6 spy Lorraine Broughton was sent to Berlin to investigate the death of another agent, and the disappearance of a list revealing every spy working there. She found a powder keg of mistrust, assassinations and bad defections that ended with the murder of MI6's top officer, as the Berlin Wall was torn down. Now Lorraine has returned from the Cold War's coldest city, to tell her story. And nothing is what it seems.

I came across the movie on pay tv & while it wasn‘t Oscar material, it was a violent, action packed Cold War thriller that I really enjoyed. As someone who grew up during the Cold War & was 18yrs when the wall came down, I love anything from that era. I tracked down a copy of the graphic novel it was based on & thoroughly enjoyed that too. Unfortunately it‘s a movie cover, but you can‘t have everything! Recommend for any other Cold War babies👩🏻‍🎤

JustJill1963 I loved the movie as well. 6y

A Cold War graphic novel that was used as the basis for the movie atomic blond. I love a good spy story and this one did it with great art.

#BookMail Pt1 Yup,that huge box had just 5 graphic novels in there. They would‘ve fit in a large envelope honestly!🤷🏻‍♀️First up is the GN that the movie Atomic Blonde is based on.Originally called The Coldest City it‘s a violent look at Berlin in the late 80s at the last days of the Wall. MI6 sends Lorraine Broughton into the city to recover a missing list of undercover agents. Loved the movie, lots of 80s music & fashion. And lots of violence💥

Book 2 of #24in48 - This was okay, I guess. I think I might have been lost if I hadn‘t seen the movie. I think the graphics are unclear at times and made it harder to follow.

Sweettartlaura Yeah, I found this a disappointment 😕 6y
Bookzombie @Sweettartlaura Yes, exactly. Seeing the movie might have made that even worse for me. 6y

The storyline was, of course, cool, but I would have enjoyed better illustrations 🤷🏻‍♀️🌟🌟🌟

Not a bad spy story. It‘s an okay graphic novel. I gave it a 3.5 star on Goodreads.

Have any of my graphic novel fan friends read this one? I watched Atomic Blonde this weekend and while I thought the movie was bizarre and did not live up to my expectations, the soundtrack is freaking amazing! I saw that it was based on this graphic novel, which my library doesn‘t have. Just wondering if it was worth tracking down and buying...

tif That movie tried to be too clever for its own good. It was a so-so for me. 7y
Clwojick Haven‘t heard of it, but I‘ll have to check to see if my library has it. 👏 7y

I enjoyed the movie more than the book! Perhaps because Charlize Theron kicks everyone‘s ass in the movie.

As the Berlin Wall collapses, cold war espionage brews. A British agent is murdered for a list containing the names of all the spies in Berlin. This graphic novel served as the basis of the recent film “Atomic Blond.” The storyline is a bit convoluted and hard to follow at times and I figured out what was going well before the end, but the stark black-and-white art serves the story well and it definitely captures the feel of the spy genre.

I read this after seeing Atomic Blonde, which is based on this book. I think I actually liked the movie better, but this is still a solid spy story.

I genuinely can't tell if I think the book is meh because of the movie or if it's the other way around #atomicblonde #thecoldestcity #antonyjohnson #samhart #graphicnovels #spy

Can't believe I won this awesome graphic novel! Thank you @bookriot and #ONIPress. Since I couldn't help watching the movie trailer, I expected our Atomic agent to be more wild and kick-ass like Charlize. Her novel version is still rather cool, more like the subtler and cunning Emma Peel. Plot was intriguing even if a bit confusing. And despite popular opinion, I thought the illustrations fit the shadowy spy game quite well. Prequel & movie next!

Has anyone read the graphic novels that this film is based on? I haven't because I don't get on with graphic novels but if you do, then I definitely recommend it because this film was AMAZING! 😍

FYI...Charlize Theron is a badass 😎

#thecoldestcity #atomicblonde

MiraMonroe I didn't know this was based off of graphic novels, but YES the film was fan-butt kicking-tastic! I might have to check them out. Plus, if your an 80s child or liked the era the soundtrack is awesome too. :) 7y
Becca95 @MiraMonroe such a good film isn't it! And I'm a 90's kid but still love the soundtrack so much! I've been listening to it every day 😂 7y
MiraMonroe @Becca95 I ended up getting a compilation on Depeche Mode too, love them and had forgotten. So great to get reacquainted with music I loved earlier in life. :) 7y

Had no idea this was based on a graphic novel till it came up in the opening credits. Enjoyable action movie, but now need to look up the graphic novel 👍🏻

This plot for this graphic novel feels like a John LeCarre reject (or a La Femme Nikita spin-off but not good). Thin on plot, clichéd (the "reveal" at the end was pretty meh and unearned), and the art really didn't make up for the sparse dialogue. Weirdly, not very graphic as far as actual content (I was expecting something bloodier). The most interesting thing, imo, is that all the German dialogue is untranslated - I wonder why that was a choice?

Charlize is a badass but this movie was just ok for me. Surprisingly slow and predictable. Have an awesome night, everyone!

Chelleo Super slow in the beginning. I dozed off. Honestly did not see the end coming until it actually unfolded though. 7y

Not life changing, but I really enjoyed Atomic Blonde. It is a fun summer escapist movie. Disclaimer: I have the movie tastes of a 13 year old boy.

I do agree it would have probably been better if written by a woman.

I picked up this book in anticipation for the Atomic Blonde movie, which looks pretty fantastic by the way. The black and white panels work well with the story being told over the course of a few days surrounding the fall of the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. It was, however, a bit of a predictable ending for a Cold War spy thriller. Still looking forward to the movie.
