Shifting between two distinctivevoices, this novel is alternately narrated bya modern-day woman living in Mexico and by poet Gilberto Owen while on the verge of death. While the womanrecalls her youthful years as an editor in New York City, haunted by Owen's ghost as she rode the subway, Owen recalls his own youth during the Harlem Renaissanceof the late 1920s, when he belonged toliterary circlesalong with writers such as Louis Zukofsky and Federico Garcia Lorca. ""

A woman is writing about an unknown author. As she writes her reality and the past blur into each other and the past starts writing it‘s own story.

As more storylines were introduced to the story, I found it harder to know who was telling each one and she lost me a little. I also found the blurriness between realities/ timelines confusing.

"In Mexico City, a young mother is writing a novel of her days as a translator living in New York. In Harlem, a translator is desperate to publish the works of Gilberto Owen, an obscure Mexican poet. And in Philadelphia, Gilberto Owen recalls his friendship with Lorca, and the young woman he saw in the windows of passing trains." ↘️

ReadingEnvy Each of these narrators interacts with even more known names and there is this sense that maybe they are really there, but also maybe not. And all the narratives connect in unexpected ways. With the boy's ghost obsession, it makes that question more complicated. Owen is friends with Lorca, but also Homer & Langley, Nella Larsen, etc. The young translator sees her husband as Owen even though their places in time are not the same. And so on.↘️

ReadingEnvy This is translated by Christina MacSweeney so would be a great WITmonth title to read later this year - she also has to try to show multiple translations from English to Spanish in the original as variants in English again, very heady. 4y

I don't know what I think about this book. It would be a great book club book and prompt a lot of discussion as to what it was about and whether it was about anything or just navel gazing.
It switches perspectives and time periods and storylines and realities so that you are never quite sure where you are. And then it ends.
And now... Let me know what you think.

This book ! So lyrical, hard to describe.A book of fractured realities, mythical visions.A young mother in Mexico City , she was a translator in New York ,obsessions include Gilbreto Owen.Sections are told from the POV of Owen , in New York of the past. From the book. “Not a fragmented novel.A horizontal novel ,narrated vertically.”My last read of 2018 ,amazing and intense.Photos in the background, Berenice Abbott.

Suet624 Wow! This book sounds great! 6y

Leftcoastzen @JustJill1963 If I ever had to give up certain foods ice cream would be the toughest followed closely by cheese. 6y
Suet624 Both cheese and ice cream are disallowed now that I have Lyme Disease. 😩😩 maybe sometime down the road, but it‘s been 5 years since I‘ve had any. 6y
Leftcoastzen @Suet624 So sorry you have to deal with that. 6y

Los Niños Perdidos reúne entrevistas con niños que intentan cruzar la frontera hacia Estados Unidos. Mi primer libro del 2018. The Lost Boys tells the story of children attempting to cross the US Border. This is my first book for the new year.

Last weekend, reading in the garden - the Dutch translation of Faces in the Crowd. Strangely intriguing book; it has a surrealistic feel, which is a perfect match to a sunny afternoon in a lush green garden. 🌳🌻☀️

Just finished this for the @bookriot #readharderchallenge for the book set in Central/South America written by an author from Central /South America. It was very well-written, definitely out of my comfort zone. There were some great shining moments, but I struggled to connect again. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars. I'm really not sure how to feel about this one...

There‘s nothing so ill advised as attributing a metonymic value to inanimate things. If you think the condition of a plant in a pot is a reflection of the condition of your soul, or worse, that of a loved one, you‘ll be condemned to disillusion or perpetual paranoia.
