21 posts | 23 read | 14 to read
A vanished child, a family in turmoil, and a fateful phone call that brings the torments of the past into the harrowing present . . . the New York Times bestselling author of Someone Is Watching weaves these spellbinding elements into a gripping novel of psychological suspensea must-read for fans of Laura Lippman and Mary Higgins Clark. I think my real name is Samantha. I think Im your daughter. Caroline Shipleys heart nearly stops when she hears those words from the voice on the other end of the phone. Instantly, shes thrust fifteen years into the past, to a posh resort in Baja, Mexicoand the fateful night her world collapsed. The trip is supposed to be a celebration. Carolines husband, Hunter, convinces her to leave their two young daughters, Michelle and Samantha, alone in their hotel suite while the couple enjoys an anniversary dinner in the restaurant downstairs. But returning afterward, Caroline and Hunter make a horrifying discovery: Two-year-old Samantha has vanished without a trace. What follows are days, weeks, and years of anguish for Caroline. Shes tormented by media attention that has branded her a cold, incompetent mother, while she struggles to save her marriage. Caroline also has to deal with the demands of her needy elder daughter, Michelle, who is driven to cope in dangerous ways. Through it all, Caroline desperately clings to the hope that Samantha will someday be foundonly to be stung again and again by cruel reality. Plunged back into the still-raw heartbreak of her daughters disappearance, and the suspicions and inconsistencies surrounding a case long gone cold, Caroline doesnt know whom or what to believe. The only thing she can be sure of is that someone is fiercely determined to hide the truth of what happened to Samantha. Praise for Joy Fieldings Someone Is Watching Someone Is Watching gripped me from the first to the very last page. Bailey Carpenter is a heroine whos both victim and warrior woman, a fascinating sleuth who will linger with you long after youve finished this thrilling read.Tess Gerritsen Fielding pens a spiraling tale of paranoia and suspense, as sultry as a Miami night.Jenny Milchman An edge-of-your-seat read . . . With Fieldings patented blend of complex characters and escalating suspense, she is in top form here.Karen Robards Engrossing . . . The characters pulsate with life.Publishers Weekly (starred review) A gripping, fast-paced psychological thriller . . . Fieldings story of one womans search for justice, understanding, and internal peace is nothing short of arresting.Booklist (starred review) From the Hardcover edition.

Definitely another good book by Joy Fielding! This was a book about a family whose daughter goes missing while they are on vacation in Mexico celebrating their wedding anniversary. It‘s about how the family is ripped apart by the kidnapping and what they go through searching for their lost child/sister. Great twists and characters. I didn‘t put it together fully and I really enjoyed this one!

A little bit disappointed with this one. Had huge potential but it was just a bit too predictable for me and I really didn't like Michelle 🙄 I just need abit more from a book 😒

🌟🌟

Pricel101 I concur. Don‘t mean to be harsh, but Joy Fielding needs to stop writing like this. 👎 6y
suzie.reads @Pricel101 it's the first book I've read written by her. Just found it a bit predictable, I guessed most of it near the beginning 😏 6y
KatieMiller Too many novels nowadays are predictable:( But once in a while you get a great one 6y
suzie.reads @KatieMiller very true. This is why I like to read series instead of stand alone novels. I feel they're less predictable in ways. 6y

I usually read more mainstream & popular books, but this month‘s book club pick is turning out to be the best book I‘ve read in awhile! Great book!

Reviewsbylola I love when I am forced to read a book that wouldn‘t have normally caught my eye and I end up loving it. This sounds good! 6y
Sisemore3 It‘s fantastic! I‘ve had a hard time putting it down! 6y

This is the first book I have read by Joy Fielding but it will not be my last. This one was difficult to put down, and loved the characterisation and plotting within the book, and within this throw in a surprise twist at the end and you have a great read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Some may find it difficult to read as some similarities to the Madeline McCann disappearance.

This book will bring memories of the Madeleine McCann kidnapping in 2007. The little girl in the book disappears in Mexico rather than Portugal but in both the parents were having dinner close by when the child disappears.
I flew reading this book because I couldn't wait to see how it ended.

Started reading She‘s Not There as preliminary to writing a review for Readers First (www.readersfirst.co.uk). Very quick paced, addictive and engaging book from the beginning although wouldn‘t be to everyone‘s taste. The opening of the story is somewhat akin to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. In this book though, 15 years after her daughter disappeared the mother is contacted by a girl who claims to be the daughter.

I enjoyed this book it did seem to follow the mystery of the disappearance of madeline McCann. The author gave you a real feel for the characters and some I loved and some I really took a dislike to. The book flowed well and had an ending I did not anticipate. I really felt for Michelle being the remaining child and the shadow she lived with. Well written enjoyable engaging book

This one was good right up until the end, which just completely ruined the plot for me. All of the characters in this book (with the exception of Michelle) are extremely unlikeable (not necessarily a bad thing). It's labelled as a thriller, but I would describe this novel as being a family drama surrounding a kidnapping. The writing and audio narration were both excellent, I just really disagreed with the resolution. #TBRcleanup

Started this audiobook from my Audible archives. I don't even remember buying this one! It has very mixed reviews but I'm three chapters in and I'm really enjoying it. It's pretty clearly based on the Madeline McCann case.

kendrastephaniekaryn PS, Calgary gets a shoutout in this one! #alberta 7y

A celebratory anniversary trip to a posh resort in Mexico goes horribly wrong for the Shipley family. Caroline, Hunter & young daughters, Michelle 5, and Samantha 2, are vacationing with family & friend. On their last night there is a mixup with the hotel childcare services and their 2 year old goes missing. Fast forward 15 years and a call from a teen who thinks she may be Samantha stirs up painful emotions. Well done, character driven thriller.

Notafraidofwords I figured out the mystery really early. 8y

While somewhat entertaining, I didn't love this one. A lot of the characters were completely unlikeable and I thought that the ending was very implausible. Plus, the plot mirrored the disappearance of Madeleine McCann way too much for my liking.

I've been a Joy Fielding fan for 13 years. I have all her books. I've read some of them several times. I'm sorry, Joy, but you're running out of ideas...or fuel. Not good.

Billed as a thriller but it read more like a dysfunctional family portrait (which is fabulous) with a whodunnit/is it her? element. Would make a good gift for Mother's Day.
