The Living and the Dead in Winsford
The Living and the Dead in Winsford | Hakan Nesser
8 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Winner of the Rosenkrantz Award for Best Thriller of the Year From the bestselling, award-winning Swedish author Hkan Nesser, The Living and the Dead in Winsford is a gripping and deeply atmospheric psychological thriller set on Exmoor. For fans of Gone Girl. There is nobody in the world who knows that we are here . . . A woman arrives in the village of Winsford on Exmoor. She has travelled a long way and chosen her secluded cottage carefully. Maria's sole intention is to outlive her beloved dog Castor. And to survive the torrent of memories that threaten to overwhelm her. Weeks before, Maria and her husband Martin fled Stockholm under a cloud. The couple were bound for Morocco, where Martin planned to write an explosive novel; one that would reveal the truth behind dark events within his commune of writers decades before. But the couple never made it to their destination. As Maria settles into her lonely new life, walking the wild, desolate moors, it becomes clear that Winsford isn't quite the sanctuary she thought it would be. While the long, dark evenings close in and the weather worsens, strange things begin to happen around her. But what terrible secrets is Maria guarding? And who is trying to find her? A haunting, masterly unravelling of a dreadful crime, in The Living and the Dead in Winsford, Hkan Nesser, the bestselling, award-winning author of the Van Veeteren series, tightens the tension like a noose . . .

#MarchIntoOz #NoLies There are a few big lies told in this one. I read this a few years ago , but it stays with me as a top class thriller/mystery ! Highly recommended for a rainy/snowy/chill-out day read. Excellent book 👍🏻

Not my favorite Håkan Nesser but still a good one. As I mentioned before, it's not the typical crime story. It's more about the characters; their personalities, stories and development, than about the crime itself. So some might say there's too little going on. There were a lot of mysterious things happening to the main character and I was curious to find out who or what caused them. But in the end some questions remain unanswered.

🇺🇸When I looked up to that window I saw the face. It was pale, almost white, and belonged to a young man, who obviously watched us from up there. Absolutely motionless, so for a moment I thought it was a mannequin. But it was no mannequin. After 10 seconds of standing there and watching each other, he gently raised his right hand and did a very clear gesture in front of his neck. He moved it across his throat. The meaning was unequivocal. #scary

??Gruselige Vorstellung... es wird spannend!
??Free translation: "I lit the two candles on the table. Lay down and thought for a moment. Listened to the whispering sounds of the rhododendron branches on the window sill. The wind had picked up. There were no curtains in the living room. If there stood a person or animal two meters away from my house looking inside, I would never know." What a scary notion!

After reading all five GoT books in a row, I needed something very different. So my next read will be a #crimenovel by the Swede #hakannesser in #German. I've already read a few of his books and loved them! A recommendation for everyone who does not want to read a typical crime story.
