Classic Horror Tales | Canterbury Classics
7 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
With dozens of stories of the macabre, fantastic, and supernatural,Classic Horror Talesis sure to keep readers on the edges of their seats. This collection of works by classic writers spans more than a centuryfrom 19th-century trailblazers such as John William Polidori, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Washington Irving to 20th-century masters like Saki, Edith Wharton, and Franz Kafka. The fear of the unknown is a driving force in literature, and the horror genre surpasses all others in bringing this idea to the forefront of the reader's consciousness. A wide range of cultures and classes of society are represented in this volume, reminding us that dark forces lurk all around usfor even in broad daylight, a shadow exists somewhere.

Unlikely request of the day… Give me your short horror recommendations!

I‘m looking for short stories or novellas that might be available on CD (so we might have more luck with classics, than completely contemporary stuff). The requester is a massive Stephen King fan, but his books are quite unwieldy on CD, so that‘s not working. You all know what an avid horror reader I‘m not…

What would you recommend?

Susanita I have no idea if this is available on CD but here you go. It‘s a mystery anthology and not specifically horror, but a couple of the stories were a bit … harrowing. (edited) 2d
rockpools @Susanita Interesting- thank you! If I can find a copy, that could work really nicely. Thanks! And harrowing is pretty much the vibe we‘re going for. 2d
BookwormAHN Goddess of Filth is good and only about 150 pages. My library had it on audio so you should be able to find it 2d

shortsarahrose I really liked this on audio (it was one of those Playaway players from the library; don‘t know if it is on CD). Short, but so creepy! 2d
dabbe I'd recommend the short stories/poems of EA Poe, especially “The Fall of the House of Usher,“ “The Raven“, “The Black Cat“, “The Cask of Amontillado“; “Berenice“, “Hop-Frog“; “The Imp of the Perverse“, “Ligeia“, “The Masque of the Red Death“, “The Oval Portrait'“, “The Pit and the Pendulum“, “The Tell-Tale Heart“ ... pretty much most of his stuff! 🤩 2d
TracyReadsBooks Stephen Graham Jones, probably my favorite horror writer, has a novella called Night of the Mannequins which I really enjoyed. 2d
LeahBergen What about the weird (adult) short stories of Roald Dahl or maybe Shirley Jackson? I moved on to those from loving Stephen King (and his short tales) in my teens. 1d

Day 23 #Scarathlon Photo Challenge - Spider. I'm not a fan of spiders and the only Horror book that I remember having a spider in it, mentioning that would be a spoiler. I don't know if there are any spiders in this short story collection, but a spider on the spine is enough for me *shiver* #TeamWhoYaGonnaCall

Tonight's bedtime reading is going to be a short story or too. I just keep mixing it up. Or... I just keep procrastinating on finishing Ghost Story. 😒
