Koh-I-Noor: The History of the World's Most Infamous Diamond
Koh-I-Noor: The History of the World's Most Infamous Diamond | Anita Anand, William Dalrymple
12 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
From the internationally acclaimed and bestselling historians William Dalrymple and Anita Anand, the first comprehensive and authoritative history of the Koh-i-Noor diamond, arguably the most celebrated jewel in the world. On March 29, 1849, the ten-year-old leader of the Sikh kingdom of the Punjab was ushered into the magnificent Mirrored Hall at the center of the British fort in Lahore, India. There, in a formal Act of Submission, the frightened but dignified child handed over to the British East India Company swathes of the richest land in India and the single most valuable object in the subcontinent: the celebrated Koh-i-Noor diamond, otherwise known as the Mountain of Light. To celebrate the acquisition, the British East India Company commissioned a history of the diamond woven together from the gossip of the Delhi Bazaars. From that moment forward, the Koh-i-Noor became the most famous and mythological diamond in history, with thousands of people coming to see it at the 1851 Great Exhibition and still more thousands repeating the largely fictitious account of its passage through history. Using original eyewitness accounts and chronicles never before translated into English, Dalrymple and Anand trace the true history of the diamond and disperse the myths and fantastic tales that have long surrounded this awe-inspiring jewel. The resulting history of south and central Asia tells a true tale of greed, conquest, murder, torture, colonialism, and appropriation that shaped a continent and the Koh-i-Noor itself.

A stack of books from #hiselderliness and a friendly whale (that‘s a mural alongside the America‘s Cup village currently in our harbour)

He‘s got two Picks and two Bails in his #bookreport

On my own two feet - I gave up on it. That guy just wanted to talk about himself and how important he was. He said Edmund Hillary rang him for advice on how to climb a mountain. (That is sacrilege it seems!)⬇️

Centique A Furious Sky - that was interesting. There‘s this place in America where it‘s below sea level and they have all these hurricanes. It‘s called something-sana? (Louisiana I think he means?)
Say Nothing - So the Irish wanted to get rid of the English. But there were like four different groups of Irish and they all wanted to do it differently. They ended up mostly shooting each other. I stopped reading after that. ⬇️

Centique Koh-I-nor - I thought that would be a boring book but it was good. This diamond was so huge that they couldn‘t trust the jeweller to cut it cos he might steal some - so they encased most of it in lead and just left him a little corner to work on. That was clever. 3y
TrishB Great stuff 👏🏻 to the point as always ♥️ 3y

TheAromaofBooks I may have already recommended this one, but my dad, husband, & brother all read it recently & really loved it 😂 There is an edition that has a LOT more photographs, all taken on the actual journey & they are pretty amazing. 3y
MicheleinPhilly I ❤️ his elderliness. I can always count on him for a big belly laugh. 3y
Reggie I respect the stepping away from Say Nothing. Like he has certain standards and once they dip below it, it‘s a wrap. Good for him. 3y

TheAromaofBooks That's so fantastic!! He may also enjoy this documentary, which is on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovFT7ji-D2c - it has loads of not just the photographs, but actual film (as in, moving pictures! From 1915!) from the journey. Dad & my husband thought the documentary was a really fun supplement after they had read the book, so your dad may like it, too!! 3y
Cinfhen Yay!!! I‘m excited your dad picked the book back up xxx and how cool there is actual FILM @TheAromaofBooks 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - it's sooo cool - actual footage of the men climbing the rigging of the ship, wrestling with the dogs, cooking food, etc. I didn't actually read the book myself, but after listening to three family members go on about it, I feel like I have 😂 3y

FINISHED!!! Glory of glories, I have FINISHED READING KOHINOOR!!! Ha! Omg, what a *struggle*.

A lovely Litten, moons ago, gave me carte Blanche to DNF this but I‘d promised I‘d read it so I had to slog on.

It‘s not bad, really it‘s not. If you‘re in the market for a good historical treatise and interested in the subject matter, I recommend it. If you‘re an expat in India having bad India Days, Just. Don‘t. An unbiased reader would say “Pick”.

Snarky... love it! The Mughals were Persians, Shah Shuja Afghan, Ranjit Singh Punjabi with his court in Lahore. Assuming for the moment that the British decided to “give it “back””, which modern country has the “better” claim; Iran, Afghanistan, India or Pakistan... ? Arguably potentially Iran in theory? Do we count military defeat for these arguments? Interesting thoughts. (The Kohinoor, I‘m willing to make this claim, is staying in the UK...).

Right. That‘s me out for the night. In the last thirteen pages, 4 wives of Ranjit Singh (& 7 slave girls), 3 wives of Kharak Singh (& 11 slave girls) and two of the teenaged wives of the 19yo Nau Nihal Singh were burnt alive on their dead husband or owner‘s funeral pyres. Nau Nihal Singh‘s eldest wife was spared because she was pregnant and his uncle saved a 12yo wife for being “not yet ripe for the ceremony of suttee”. History. Repugnant 😡😡😡

DGRachel Oh h***. I don‘t think I could stomach that book. 😡 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @DGRachel yeah, it‘s in danger of going out a window (but he‘s presenting at the Literature Festival & I‘m going with a friend so I promised I‘d read it.... 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️). 6y

Ill-timed lunch breaks... wow. (This is a balanced if not slightly pro-Indian, heavily researched book by a Indophile and Indian... so that‘s basically extremely politely scathing...).

Holed up amidst the chaos... 😡 The guys making my bookcase (no “big box” furniture stores in Mumbai so everything needs to be hand made. This is cool until you try it 😭), have “interpreted” direct written instructions as directly the opposite of what they explicitly said & ignored photos. They‘ve missed bits, painted the wrong bits, put horrible handles on AND after stalling for 3 Days, refused to deliver because “traffic”. I long for IKEA. 😭😡

You will notice that I finished the other Arend and am still going with Kohinoor. The Mughals have been defeated, Afghanistan is falling apart & the Marathas lost a battle because of a gattling gun and ill timed lunch break....it‘s taken me one romance to get to the 1800‘s. At this rate, I‘ll get through 3 other books to one Kohinoor but finish it I shall!! (It‘s really not hideous but the tortures, insanity and politicking are doing my head in).

Pushing on with this dratted book. I promised I‘d read it & I usually love William Dalrymple but....oh MAN it‘s dragging. I‘m prodding my protesting brain along with Kindle deals of Canadian cowboy romance (they‘re very polite😂). Kohinoor has history and gravitas, Rocky Mountains has SNOW and stunning natural beauty, neither of which heavily polluted Mumbai is providing today. After I finish this, I swear I‘m never agreeing to a blind read again!
