#2018Book19
The first 3/4 of this book were good. The chapters alternate between a runaway slave, his owner's son, a northern woman, her brother, and his best friend. The book focuses on events surrounding the Civil War, but never gets into details of the war itself. The end of the book, however, kind of fell apart. Pretty much everything that happens at the end is purely for shock value and not because it actually enhances the plot in any way.
I loved this book set during the Civil War in New York. This debut novel includes a strong female protagonist, Mary, who helps runaway slaves escape to Canada. There's suspense, romance, and history- and this novel is based on a diary the author found in a barn on his family's property. Town Line, New York, the setting of this novel, is the only northern town that seceded during the Civil War- a fact I find fascinating.
#TBRtemptation post 2! Recently released. Based on the true story of the only secessionist town north of the Mason-Dixon Line. In Town Line, Mary Willis finds an escaped slave, Joe Bell, in the barn. She fend off soldiers, spies, Joe's owner, and even her own brother, to save Joe. The Civil War in all its conflicting horrors. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
@StaceyKondla tagged me in #FiveStarPredictions. These are but a few of the books on my tbr that I hope will be be excellent. Most of these I can #blameonlitsy. Tagging @Yamich49 and @Bookworm83
Darren Wang singing a book for me yesterday! (Shhhh, don't tell my Dad, it's a surprise). Spotted in the Decatur Book Festival instagram feed. The city of Decatur proclaimed yesterday "Darren Wang Day" in honor of his work to make the DBF the largest independent book festival in the country!!! #DBF2017

Enjoyed this debut from Darren Wang, the founder and CEO of the Decatur Book Festival. Can't wait to hear him discuss this novel (based on research he did about the house he grew up in, which was a stop on the real Underground Railroad). Only two more days until this year's DBF begins!!!!!!
My #NorthernFiresGiveaway ARC arrived today. I love a good bit of Civil War fiction.
Thank you so much, @JacintaMCarter (and big hugs to you during this horribly sad time for your family ❤️).
Congratulations to @LeahBergen for being chosen by the Random Name Picker and winning the #NorthernFiresGiveaway! Send me an email at jacinta.m.carter@gmail.com and let me know your mailing address.
GIVEAWAY ALERT! I've apparently gone insane and decided to attempt all of the photo challenges for August. So, as an apology for blowing up your feeds for the rest of the month (and because I ended up with 2 copies of this ARC), I've decided to start with a giveaway. This book is set in the Civil War, so from Aug 1-6, make a new post about a favorite Civil War novel, tag me, and use #NorthernFiresGiveaway. Open for US and international entries!
Another nice surprise made it into my mailbox!! I absolutely love this cover and the book sounds phenomenal! Thank you @bookbrag for the ARC copy!
What to read next?! Vacation next week, so I need to pick a book.
