The Flintstones Vol. 1
The Flintstones Vol. 1 | Mark Russell
21 posts | 18 read | 10 to read
Fred and Barney reunite for Mark Russell's modern take on Hanna-Barbera's most famous stone-age family! This new series starring the first family of Bedrock (and civilization, really) tells the story of who we are and why we do what we do as if it all began with Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, and the rest of the citizens of Bedrock. Shining a light on humanity's ancient customs and institutions in a funny origin story of human civilization, Mark Russell (PREZ) blends modern interpretations with Hanna-Barbera's classic character's, bringing a breath of fresh stone-age air. Hanna-Barbera has created some of the most recognizable animated characters of all time. As part of DC Comics' re-imagination of cartoons like Scooby-Doo, The Flintsones, Johnny Quest, Space Ghost, and Wacky Racers, these new series will be infused with modern and contemporary concepts while keeping the heart and soul of the classic animation. Collects THE FLINTSTONES #1-6.

1) Definitely, their stories focus on really different things and you can usually even see a difference in the books at times. A lot of my large comic book volumes still have the newspaper paper used which isn‘t common for graphic novel (plus we can even throw manga in as the third category here).

2) The tagged one is really fun and I don‘t think very well known

3) Depends on the story but open to whatever!

BookmarkTavern Oh! I should do some manga questions sometime! Thanks for sharing! 4y

This is shockingly good. It is one of the best-written pieces of satire that I have read in a while. It manages to address PTSD, religion, infertility, war, and homophobia in a relevant and smart way. Using the Flintstones. I know, I was surprised, too. But trust me.

RamsFan1963 I agree. I was surprised how mature the themes were handled in a comic about a "stone-age family". 5y

Along with Scooby-Doo Apocalypse, this is DC's best Hanna-Barbera recreation. Funny, touching, surprisingly sharp and witty, much more than the silly rock and stone puns of the cartoon (although those are there too). I didn't expect this to touch on the horrors of war, veterans, consumerism and religion. I recommend it. 4 💥💥💥💥 out of 5.

LibrarianRyan I loved scobby doo. But I could not get through the Flintstones. 5y
Tanisha_A Oh wow! I had no idea about this. Used to love Flintstones back when I was a kid. 5y

The classic pre-historic world re-imagined as trenchant social satire. Exquisite art and great writing combine in this shockingly good series. This is the new bar by which all reboots should be evaluated.

Didn‘t realize how much I needed this in my life. Super funny, laugh out bits like the swimsuits while also covering a wide variety of hard hitting topics. Definitely worth the read and will be getting volume 2 in the near future. Very nostalgic with all the same characters but takes a different twist on the story.

This is not the Flintstones of my childhood, it‘s a brilliant satire tackling a wide range of topics. This is just an incredibly well done book. Can‘t wait to read the next volume!

If you haven‘t yet read this, do it now. This is not what I remember from my childhood; the Flintstones are revamped and sophisticated, tackling modern issues in a Stone Age world, such as marriage and war. Great read.

I just heard about this on a podcast (The Librarian is In) and think I have to try it! I was a huge fan of the cartoon when I was growing up (I remember watching it after coming home from school 😉) Lots of fun! Might be good to see a new take on the classic.

The #weekdayreadathon is clipping skinny great! After finishing S. and AMERICANAH, I decided I need something a little easy-breezy, and this did not disappoint. A delightful take on the old cartoon and a smart satire. Very well done. 5/5.

Betty My parents were Fred and Wilmoth. I'm Betty; met only one Barney in my life and married someone else. Not 100% Flintstone 7y

The Flintstones volume 1

A modern-day take on this Stone Age classic 🤔 Loved it 👍 I grew up watching The Flintstones cartoon 😉 Reading this volume brought back some of those childhood memories. Also, as an adult I enjoyed the modern and social perspective of this remake 👍 Different, yet the same 😁 Totally looking forward to volume 2 ✌️

5/5 I will admit there are flat parts especially in the beginning, but it wound up actually being genius! I loved all the puns, and the humor is perfect! There are brilliant references throughout, so give this a shot!

New reading materials for the weekend! I'm excited for The Flintstones; I've heard that the writing is excellent and addresses political issues and mental health. Keeping A Nature Journal will be useful for this upcoming Spring Quarter when I'll be hiking and identifying plants and plant families in the PNW.

I do not know what is worse, the artwork or the story line. This graphic novel is so crude and mean to everyone that it has forever ruined a favorite part of my childhood.

Full scathing review on Goodreads.

alanacristin Geez. I'm trying to grasp the target audience with all this... 7y
LibrarianRyan @alanacristin they are clearly trying to target adult, but like middle aged typical high school jocks. I'm going to try and finish it today, it just pisses me off every time I start reading it. 7y

I am reading the new Flintstones Graphic Novel. I am appalled at how bad it is. How it's just torn precious childhood memories to shreds. I'm going to finish it, but I'm having a hard time.

Sarah83 The drawings seem to be 😢😢😢😢 7y
LibrarianRyan @Sarah83 oh they are. They are horrible. And the story lines. Ughhhhhh. I'm going to push through to finish it but don't expect a rave. 7y
Sarah83 I'm always confused how someone can do such @!😱💀😈 shit to a classic child's cartoon. 😓 7y

LibrarianRyan @Sarah83 the new Scooby Doo Scoobypocolypse is Awesome. Grown up for a new crowd but still lovable. This is just trash. 7y
Sarah83 Looks pretty cool. 😍 I loved scooby when I was little. But I loved flintstones too. This drawing really hurts. 7y
melrailey I'm glad to hear the Scooby one is good as I'm about to order it. 7y
LibrarianRyan @melrailey it's a new take and adult but I liked it. My review plus lots of pics from the galley should be linked to the book. 7y
