I Call Upon Thee
I Call Upon Thee: A Novella | Ania Ahlborn
30 posts | 16 read | 69 to read
A terrifying e-novella from the bestselling author of The Devil Crept In, Brother, and Within These Walls. Maggie Olsen had a pretty ordinary childhoodswimming and sleepovers, movie nights and dad jokes. And then there were the other thingsthe darker thingsthe shadow that followed her home from the cemetery and settled into the corners of her home, refusing to let her grow up in peace. Now, after three years away from the place she's convinced she inadvertently haunted, and after yet another family tragedy strikes, Maggie is forced to return to the sweltering heat of a Savannah summer to come to terms with her past. All along, she's been telling herself, it was just in your head, and she nearly convinces herself that she'd imagined it all. But the moment Maggie steps into the foyer of her family home, she knows. The darkness is still here. And it's been waiting for Maggie's return.

⚡️ I can‘t decide on the scariest but the tagged book definitely got to me.
⚡️Salo is definitely one... Cannibal Holocaust was traumatic 🐢 (Martyrs also but I recommend it)
⚡️Um.. top 2: I was once in a snowmobile accident and hit a tree headfirst/ My house was broken into when I was home alone.

BookwormAHN Salo was incredibly disturbing 🙈 7y
AngelErin I liked Martyrs! Cannibal Holocaust is one I want to watch. 7y
teebe @AngelErin honestly, I think Cannibal Holocaust is probably the most disturbing out of anything because the animal mutilation scenes are real. So huge TW there but if you can get through that, the rest doesn‘t seem that bad by comparison. 7y
teebe @BookwormAHN definitely! I‘m glad I got through it though. 7y
AngelErin @teebe Oh geez. Well thanks for the TW! 7y
JenlovesJT47 Still working on your pen pal package, don't want you to think I've forgotten about you. Sorry for the delay! I have to condense my post office trips and do everything all at once, so I'm waiting on something to get here before I can send everything. Hope you are doing well! ☺️ 7y

I don‘t think I‘ll fit in another book, so here‘s what I read in February.

I listened to Tiffany Haddish‘s memoir, Burnt Offerings, and I Call Upon Thee (so creepy).

I loved everything I read - it was a great reading month! 😄

Kristi Demeester‘s book took me the longest to read. It‘s very good; she writes beautifully. But her stuff is super dark and heavy. Even though I love horror, it wasn‘t something I could blow through in one sitting.

LauraJ Thanks for the Kristi DeMeester review. I‘ve almost started reading it several times. Knowing the best way to read it is nice. 7y
Sweettartlaura I listened to Burnt Offerings a couple months ago - loved it! Found it totally by accident - it was Audible‘s daily deal. Love when that happens! 7y
BekahB @Sweettartlaura That‘s totally why I bought it too. I‘m so glad it was a daily deal because the narrator for this book was great! 7y
BekahB @LauraJ it took me most of the month to read. Honestly there were a few times when I wondered if I was even enjoying it, and then I‘d read a strange, but wonderful story and want to see what came next. I‘m really interested in her novel 7y
Sweettartlaura Totally agree about the narrator, @BekahB ! 7y

A ouija board and a ghost/evil/demonic prescence? Sign me up!
I started this only a few days ago and the next thing I knew I only had an hour left! A great tale with a really interesting female friendship *not* centered around guys at all!
The explanation during the climax seemed unnecessary/repetitive but still...great pick!

JoeStalksBeck I love this novella! 7y

Love Ahlborn's characters. All three of her books that I've read focus on themes of family and responsibility. This one is spooky, but low on gore. Drawing out the details of the deaths in the book felt unnecessary to me, otherwise I enjoyed it. The e-book version of most of her books are available for $0.99 - $4.99 right now.
The above quote is from the author's notes at the end of the book. 👻

This was a great creepy ghost story. This is the kind of book I like. No serial killers or realistic violence.aI Girl, a ouija board, and a ghost/demon. I wish it was longer. This is black cat approved.
If anyone has any other recommendations like this I'd love it. Thank @JoeStalksBeck . Great pick. Tap Tap Tap.

UglyOldBat I liked this one for a creepy ghost story 7y

That author's note tho 😱 I think the best horror stories are often ones that seem plausible, that are scary by their familiarity. And what I found most terrifying (and hilarious) about this one:

Who has a constant pain in their neck/shoulders?👋🏼 Who had porcelain dolls? 👋🏼 Who used to hide them? 👋🏼 Who thinks mirrors are creepy? 👋🏼 Who covers mirrors? 👋🏼 Who lives close to a cemetery? 👋🏼 Who played with Ouja boards as a kid? 👋🏼😅

Terrifying. Ahlborn has managed to write a #horror novella that has all the paranormal hallmarks without seeming overwrought, by focusing on the emotional state of her main character. This is horror done well. I need all her books stat.

Waiting for people to show up at a sports bar so I can shoot video for a commercial. I'm so glad I ALWAYS have a book with me. It's gorgeous out here. And quiet. Not good for the commercial, but great for my introverted self.
