"Rambunctious and wacky."-- "Los Angeles Times."Curiosity just might be the death of Mrs. Murphy--and her human companion, Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen. Small towns are like families: Everyone lives very close together. . .and everyone keeps secrets. Crozet, Virginia, is a typical small town-until its secrets explode into murder. Crozet's thirty-something post-mistress, Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen, has a tiger cat (Mrs. Murphy) and a Welsh Corgi (Tucker), a pending divorce, and a bad habit of reading postcards not addressed to her. When Crozet's citizens start tuming up murdered, Harry remembers that each received a card with a tombstone on the front and the message "Wish you were here" on the back. Intent on protecting their human friend, Mrs. Murphy and Tucker begin to scent out clues. Meanwhile, Harry is conducting her own investigation, unaware her pets are one step ahead of her. If only Mrs. Murphy could alert her somehow, Harry could uncover the culprit before the murder occurs--and before Harry finds herself on the killer's mailing list."It should delight cat fancier. . .sassy, silly, and plenty of fun."-- "The Baltimore Sun"

I read this series before, but I never noticed the language I guess. I can't listen to it anymore. I despise the F word and you should never take God's name in vain. There is a lot of that in the first hour I listened to this book. No thank you!

I think I have a better sense of what a "cozy" mystery is after reading this novel. Now I'm wondering if my cats are trying to help me solve mysteries and I'm just too dense to realize it.

Aimeesue Oh, they totally are, but they‘re terrible communicators. 😸 (edited) 8mo

I'm finding the cat and dog detective sections a little much, a bit contrived. Dogs and cats don't think like humans, darn it.

(This despite the fact I loved a book that features detective sheep. GO WITH IT.)

It just... doesn't add much to the mystery, because very little can be communicated between Harry and her pets.

Also how is Harry's long-term nickname, even with childhood friends, from her HUSBAND'S surname???

I'm not sure how I feel about this one and the cat-amd-dog investigation parallel to the human one. Feels very... twee? Not quite the word I want. But having enough fun so far!

Book 14 #cozyinthesun @Librarybelle @ferskner I can see why this has been a popular series for so many years. I love the idea of a postmistress and her cat and dog being the sleuths. And the author co writes with her cat. The cucumber sandwich recipe came from Live and Let Chai served with Peach tea.

ferskner I'm always in for a cucumber sandwich! 5y

Giving the first in this #CozyMystery series a try. #CurrentlyListening

RiaWritten These were the first adult books I ever picked up when I was younger! I still have a real soft spot for them. 😺 5y

Such a fun read! Small town murder mystery gets solved with the help of the MC‘s trusty dog and cat, who both have opinions on how stupid humans are. The ending was a bit predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. Definitely recommend this one.

Pets solving crimes?!? I‘m so in!! I adored this book. The characters (both human and animal) are fun and quirky. Not to mention it‘s full of small town drama; wedding invite lists, divorces, affairs, it‘s got a bit of everything! Will totally continue on with the series. Bowie was pretty excited about it too. 😻Yet another score for #readharder2018 #bowie #catsoflitsy

I remember starting this series when I was fairly young and really loving them bc they were mostly told as if narrated by the cat, Mrs. Murphy, and the corgi, Tucker. It was also fascinating that they take place in a nearby location. Harry and her two super sleuth pets tackle all sorts of mysteries while caring for the other #fuzzyanimals on the farm as well. #HopIntoSpring @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

The start of the Mrs. Murphy series which is now up to 27 books. I became smitten with Mrs. Murphy, Tucker and Pewter. I plan to read all 27!

Great book! I may just read another Rita Mae Brown in spite of my previous qualms. Still not a fan of the gol durn profanity - somehow f-Bombs and talking animals seems incongruous. And the thought of the murders makes my stomach turn. BUT you get used to all that and get sucked into the mystery and the capital C characters. Southern small town with everyone in each other's business - sometimes in a good way. Worth a read!

Today's author spotlight: Rita Mae Brown! The 77-year-old, born in Hanover, PA, was left at an orphanage after she was born. She was retrieved by her teenage mother's cousin and raised by her and her husband. While attending NYU in the '60s, she was sometimes homeless. She now lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. She wrote the screenplay for "The Slumber Party Massacre", and has written 26 Mrs. Murphy mysteries. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

Listening to this one, and the reader is fine. Talking animals and their perspectives on humans are fun. However, for me, profanity (quite a bit) and gristly murders do not fit the cozy genre. I remember several years ago starting a Rita Mae Brown and stopping it pretty quickly. I thought I would give her another try - this may be the last.

The #bookishsquad of Mrs. Murphy, Tee Tucker, and the reluctant Pewter may not be people but they are a great group of characters solving the many murders in Crozet. I wish Banjo here were as talented as Sneaky Pie Brown (w/help from Rita Mae Brown) and could earn enough money writing so I could stay home and read. #augustofpages #photobookchallenge
