Half Wild | Pip Smith

Pip Smith has always been an agent of change. With her powerful debut novel, Half Wild, she will surely change the way we read, write, think and talk about Australian fiction.' Sam Twyford-Moore, host of The Rereaders podcast and former director of the Emerging Writers' Festival Sydney, 1938. After being hit by a car on Oxford Street, sixty-three-year-old Jean Ford lies in a coma in Sydney Hospital. Doctors talk across her body, nurses jab her in the arm with morphine, detectives arrive to take her fingerprints. She has 100 in her pocket, but no identification. Memories come back to her-a murder trial, a life in prison-but with each prick of the needle her memories begin to shift. Wellington, 1885. Tally Ho doesn't need to go to school because she is going to be a fisherman or a cart driver or a butcher boy like Harry Crawford. Wellington is her town and she makes up the rules. Papa takes her fishing, Nonno teaches her how to jump fences on his horse Geronimo-life gallops on the way it should, until a brother, baby William, is born. 'Go and play with your sisters,' Papa says, but wearing dresses and sipping tea is not the life for Tally Ho. Taking the advice of her hero, Harry Crawford, she runs away. Sydney, 1917. The burned body of a woman is discovered on the banks of the Lane Cove River. Was she a mad woman? A drunk who'd accidentally set herself on fire? Nobody knows, until-three years later-a tailor's apprentice tells police that his mother went missing that same weekend, and that his stepfather, Harry Crawford, is not who he seems to be. Who, then, is he? Based on the true lives of Eugenia Falleni, Half Wild is Pip Smith's dazzling debut novel.

As the author explains at the rear of this book, this is a work of fiction based on a true Australian crime.
Enter the lives of Eugenia Falleni -- also known as the man-woman.
For those participating in the #aussiesrule2018 challenge this book can be read for No 19 (debut novel) and is set in both New Zealand and NSW for the state challenge.

No_One Oooh, I love true crime and I love fiction based around true crimes! Sounds good! 6y
Sue I managed to pick up this one about Eugenia last weekend (hooray for book sales). I first heard his story on the Deviant Women podcast. 6y

Pickpick

Finished the first book in the Aussie round of #LMPBC This was @Marchpane choice, it‘s a hard book to read at times, it‘s told from many different perspectives which muddled it up a bit. I also know a bit about the real life case this is based on, there was an episode on Crime&Investigation channel about this case, which also coloured my perception too. I‘m not surprised it‘s been made a book, the case is fascinating. Sending it Monday @LeeRHarry

LeeRHarry Rightio ! 😊 6y

#LMPBC Just finishing @Marchpane selection for our Aussie group in the #LitsyMarkupPostalBookClub It‘s a fictional novel that‘s based on a true story about a woman in Australia in the early 1900s that transformed herself into someone else. Not giving away the plot line is really hard so that‘s all I‘m saying! Pairing it up with a Honeycrisp Apple tea from Davids Tea thanks to @LeahBergen who feeds my habit! Will send it Monday @LeeRHarry

TommieMarie74 Honeycrisp Apple tea sounds AMAZING!! I‘m going to have to check that out! 😍 6y
Laura317 Honeycrisp Apple tea is a thing? I‘ll have to buy some. 😍 6y
RebelReader The book sounds interesting, but the tea sounds amazing! I need to check that out. 😍 6y

LeahBergen One of my favourite teas. 😘 6y
LeeRHarry Looking forward to it! I arrived back in Aus yesterday - I haven't received the Marsh King's Daughter whilst I've been away 😳 6y
Lizpixie @LeeRHarry I figured I‘d send both together. You said you‘d be back mid-January so I though it‘d be pointless to send it sooner. Is that ok? They‘re both fairly quick reads, especially if you get caught in the story. 6y
LeeRHarry @Lizpixie aha smart thinking 😊 should have figured you'd do something like that 😊not a problem, looking forward to them both 😊 6y

Still battling a virus so my #litsypartyofone looks like this: Jatz, lemonade and cough lollies with my much neglected kindle staring at me.

I've had to cancel all social engagements (including book club 😱) but at least this is one party I can still enjoy 🎉😊

Michelle_mck Take care of yourself 😘 7y

Posemn "Jatz, lemonade and cough lollies" seems like a much more pleasant recovery plan than Ritz, ginger ale and cough drops in my neck of the woods. (Spell check put up quite a fight when I tried quoting you with those words ?) Enjoy your reading down time and hope you feel better soon. 7y

Marchpane @Posemn @Jinjer lol you are too funny 😂 Of course it sounds completely mundane and ordinary to me, but I guess we Aussies must sound like a bunch of five year olds to the outside world 😂🤣 7y
